Andrew: Where is the closest supermarket?…read more Hotel Front Desk: You head down to the train station find Karlstr and walk down. Easy enough to find. Now I know Rewe is one of the main supermarkets in Germany, during my travel I also saw one south of Frankfurt. With that I'll give those who travel a little tip: the local supermarket should be your first stop when travelling because instead of paying the little retail stores two euros and change for a bottle of tiny water, the supermarket sells the larger sized ones for less than one euro. Bam. Two: even though my hotel served a great breakfast, I just love Tangerines or Oranges in the morning, it's like a dose of sunshine in the morning...that and coffee. In this case Rewe had a bag of Clementines for about one euro. Bam, Andew is like sunshine now. Though I didn't try this Rewe has a salad bar and serves hot food and sandwiches. It's not so grand, it's not so bright and not so big. But you can get everything you need here, including alcohol and things to freshen up your day. Merry Christmas!

Well this was a dirty little place. I went not long before closing just to have a look around, and…read morethe seedy red light district surrounding certainly seeps into the joint. The food counter looks like where drunk guys spend their leftover euros after the strip club, and I was left wondering if they close at 22:00 to avoid violence in the store. The food is fine, though they clearly stock for a less than healthy crowd who seems to live crackers, cheap cookies, a bit of dairy, and 1/4 of their diet in alcohol...such are the proportions of aisles. The line, even at 21:30 on a Tuesday, was 8 people long and not fast - seems as if the same hazy customers run the till.

This Aldi's is simply one of the most disgusting grocery stores I've been in anywhere on this…read moreplanet. Many grocery stores in Third World countries are far cleaner than this dump of a grocery store. Many shelves were not stocked. Trash was all over the floor. A homeless man's pants were near the shopping cart pick up area. This is simply a disgusting dump! We walked around the store and then left without purchasing anything.

So this is not a beautiful high end grocery store like the one in the basement of Karstadt around…read morethe corner. But it is a good sized market with great prices & good variety of items. I love to hit the bread machine first and get a warm soft cheese pretzel twist roll. Then I grab a yogurt for my breakfast in the morning. Next it's off to the "treat" aisle to buy some cookies and chocolates. Lastly I hit the canned & jar good area near the small produce section. I particularly like the small jars of cornichon pickles for .95€. I've also bought cans of asparagus soup here for .69€. In the center of the store there are always some unusual things you wouldn't expect to find in a grocery store. And at the back of the store are some reasonably priced toiletry items. Checkstands leave a bit to be desired as there is no bagging area for your purchases. Best to keep your basket you've just unloaded & put your stuff back in it and go to bagging area with it.
