The Brendon Arms is clearly very popular as lot of ables were already reserved for dinner. Worth noting that there are more tables at the back of restaurant behind the bar. We spotted a few people come in, see tables were full or reserved at the front and then leave. There is a large menu including various salads, traditional pub favourites and grills. There's also a specials board with fresh local fish dishes and other chefs specials. The battered fish and chips varies according to "the catch of the day". I ordered the West Country Ham with egg and new potatoes (£7.95). My partner ordered a burger with Davidstow Cheddar and Bacon (£6.50). There was lots of lovely hand carved ham and delicious new potatoes. My partner said his burger was homemade and really tasty. The portions were large too. My partner opted to add chips to his burger for an extra £2 and there were lots. He struggled to finish it. Although the food was great, it was really slow arriving, taking more than 35 mins to arrive - The only downside in our visit. Staff are really friendly and the waiting staff very efficient. Well worth a visit.

The view from the front of the guesthouse is of a golfcourse, followed by miles and miles (we walked literally 20 miles in about 7 hours) of amazing beach and cliff side coastal walks. The location and great time we had here are what makes this place earn a 5 star rating. The B&B itself was quaint, homey, quiet, within walking distance to coffee shops a grocery store and the main downtown shops, and managed / owned by a lovely couple. Breakfast was good too, with a lot of options for hot or cold items. It was clean, the bed was comfortable, the room was a good size with all of the amenities we needed, and overall it was really nice. The only complaint I have is that the shower was barely warm at all and very small-- if I were a couple of inches taller I wouldn't have been able to stand up straight. It would have been nice to have a bathtub as well. That said though, I'd definitely recommend it for people wanting an affordable, very nice, holiday spot.

The building is a beautifully converted barn on a dead-end country road, with central breakfast area and a galleried upper floor. Every fitting and piece of furniture is of the best quality, and the beds are very comfortable. In spite of a bereavement in her close family just days before our arrival (of which we were unaware), and having to look after another relative on the night of our stay, Rosemary found time to surprise us with a lovely warm fruit compote to have with our breakfast, having placed it in the Aga the evening before. Anyone reading this, please don't be put off by what you might think is a slightly high price: you really do get what you pay for, and it's worth every penny (as repeated numerous times in her visitors' book!).

The drive took longer than expected, and we got lost trying to locate it, but when we arrived at The Old Parsonage, Marg greeted us warmly and offered us tea and cake to help us unwind after our journey. Our room was on the second floor and featured the largest bathroom in the house. With a shower and tub, and a big window that let in plenty of light, the bathroom was pure luxury. The room was also quite spacious and pleasantly decorated. The breakfasts at The Old Parsonage were superb and used local ingredients. The porridge was delicious, and the eggs were incredibly fresh. I was delighted to see so many vegetarian options on the menu as well. Both Marg and Morag were extremely accommodating and helpful. We took several walks while in the area and Morag was happy to suggest routes and places to stop. A basket full of guide books and walks was available in the breakfast room and guests could borrow them as needed. Setting = Moorland edge Food = Crafted to a higher level Staff= Performed their tasks with precision _ I only drank water, as it was a long way to drive and I wasn't going to drink. Yet like magic just as my glass emptied, they would re-fill it. I have to say I drank my water glass dry many times as it was such fun watching them fill it up again! The food did taste special _ not only the taste, but the texture, goodness knows what sort of sieve they used to get things so smooth. And some of the dishes were feats of engineering. I think I was just enjoying being delighted. Another nice thing was I especially didn't dress up smartly just to see how the staff would behave towards me. And hats- off-to- them...they treated us exceptionally well; which inwardly made me giggle as we both were wearing our 'Star-Trek' T shirts that day. I would recommend going to Gidleigh which falls under the auspices of Michael Caines the chef and not the Cockney Actor (Sir Michael Caine). January 2011 The food was highly enjoyable. It is still a worthwhile trip you will not be disappointed. See photos...
This is the ultimate escape…read more The manual to using this resort is extremely simple: get here by horse. Contact the hotel to arrange this. If you can't ride horses, a helicopter may be a good alternative. For those of us not reading the manual, remember that you'll be driving on 10 feet wide roads lined by thick, 600-years old oak hedges. They are enlisted cultural heritage and protected by UNESCO. In other words, it's exactly the same roads people used 600 years ago. Quite an experience. No matter what your GPS says, a car journey form Exeter will take you at least 3 hours. The hotel operates time slots for alternating directions of traffic - check your arrival time with them. If you are coming for dinner only, time planning is even more crucial. Quite rightly, the butler will simply not let you skip courses. They will be served in the intended order without exception. In the case of an 8-course dinner, expect it to last until 11 pm.
