As far as dressmakers and tailors go, I know they make alterations to clothing and can also design and make clothing by special order, depending on their area of expertise. The shop front measures at a guess probably about two and a half metres wide! It's painted in a faded red patina, has a 3/4 glass and solid base front door, one large shop front window which displays a chair with a white throw on it, a rustic blue cabinet with an antique treadle sewing machine on it, with a rectangular gold scroll edge mirror above it. There is another doorway which leads into the workshop and can be closed with the blue and white leafy embossed curtains. There are no opening hours as there is nothing ready made to sell, so it'll have to be via appointment only.

These people are true craftsmen and are highly experienced in a craft that just isn't practiced as widely today as it once was. I went though a stage a few years back when I bought several old chairs and a sofa from antique shops and had them reupholstered by the guys from St Morris. The chairs and sofa were in an awful state with springs sticking out of the seats and they just weren't usable as they were. They were however stunning old pieces of furniture that simply needed a lot of TLC. After what must have been a great deal of hard work from the guys at St Morris, I ended up with the most stunning sofa covered in a pale blue fabric and two cream chairs and I still have them. One chair is in my bedroom and the other in the office. The reupholster and restoration process wasn't cheap but I really did end up with true investment pieces of furniture that have lasted for years. I know the same people are still running St Morris Upholsterers because I have referred friends to them over the years and everyone has been equally happy with the work done. Go and visit them in their store on Magill Road. You can take your old piece of furniture in for a makeover or they have some stock that's already restored and waiting for a new home. Like I said, their work isn't cheap but it's certainly worth it and you won't regret the money you spend in the long run.

The owner is down to earth and not only maintains the machines, but also an active community board, which basically spills off onto the walls. It's a good place to find out about the going ons around town and pick up a street mag. Amenities include: an internet kiosk, $3 espresso machine, vending machine, commonwealth atm and a large table to fold and organise. To kill time there's: a couple of cafes, an organic grocery store and pub on the block.

On the surface a laundromat is a laundromat. Same bland white walls, same rows of washing machines…read moreand dryers lined up. But this one is in a fairly ritzy suburb and it only costs $2.20 per load. Add 20 cents for a cup of detergent or BYO laundry powder and you're laughing. The industrial size dryers are also comparitively cheap - it costs me $4 for half an hour drying time, which easily delivers a large load warm and toasty dry. The laundromat is always kept shiny and clean (by name, by nature) and I have no hesitation in nipping off while my clothes wash or dry without fear my precious garments will be stolen. As an added bonus there is the wall of posters advertising upcoming shows, perfect for staring mindlessly at as you wait for your rinse cycle to finish. There are also more gossip magazines than you can poke a stick at. The only downside is there are no change machines on site so make sure you stock up on your dollar coins before giving it a whirl. In a nutshell - I feel so clean!

Lucky for me, I've got Ford Dry Cleaners a hop skip and jump down the road - and they can usually turn it around in a day or two. Service is really good (though I never go in for anything but your basic dry cleaning) and the prices are on par. They always treat my babies gently and have always removed any specific stains I've brought to their attention - including one huge coffee stain on my cream Lover dress, which I was totally freaked out about. They also offer your usual bits and bobbins - zips, dyes, buttons and the like - as well as minor alterations, but I wouldn't really recommend them for anything but the super basic, super specific alteration, as they're not really set up for it and don't have a change room. But hey - they do one thing and they do it well.

But OH MY GOD it was perfect. They left a note on the dress saying there were a few spots left, but I couldn't see them. I was so ecstatic I could of kissed the lady serving me. Definitely the best $19 I have spent in my life. I'm generally not a dry-cleaning person. I usually put the washing machine on gentle and hope nothing shrinks. However, there are some special items that definitely need dry cleaning. I would most definitely recommend Ford. They are friendly, fast and do a brilliant job.

I like to do what's called a feedback sandwich in my reviews, where I remark on a good quality, follow it up with an area to improve, then end again on a positive quality. Let's see... What's something good I can say about this place....? It's in a convenient locator ion that's close to work, however this doesn't count for much since you're going to be late for work anyway because the staff like to keep people waiting. Speaking of the staff there is a serious attitude problem, as they love to let you know just how much of an inconvenience you being there is to them. I think that this place looking to get the pocket my name is in a pair of trousers replaced. I was charged $50 and asked to return in a week. Upon collecting my trousers I found for the pocket linings were not replaced, just the holes sewn up. This meant that I had to purchase linings and see them into the trousers myself only a week later. When trying to discuss this with establishment of the attitude went from cold and distant to hot and hostile very quickly! You do not want to pull these guys up on their mistakes! So many reviews from people with very similar stories, why are they still operating?
