The first school was opened in spring 1998 in Berlin-Zehlendorf, tutoring around one hundred students by the end of the year.
Lernwerk's unique pedagogic and didactic concept and philosophy have proven to be very successful. Today there are five branches (four in Berlin and one in Potsdam).
The concept of the organization is unique in every way. The idea is to go beyond the students' problems at school, and to rejuvenate their interest in education and learning by helping them to achieve small goals and success.
All students receive lessons that are tailored to their individual needs, such as their learning style (and possibly their learning disabilities, special needs). Resources are developed by the tutors for the students, according to their ability, their goals and their subjects.
The student does not only receive help in their subject, but also in developing their own learning. The aim is to assist them in becoming a self-sufficient, confident and successful student and person.
Courses offered:
The Basic Learning courses are the most successful and popular ones at Lernwerk. They are taught exclusively by the manager and founder of Lernwerk, Swantje Goldbach, and one of the branch managers, Jasmin Wolf.
The subject-specific courses are taught by teaching staff. The preparation courses for school leaver exams (Abitur, which is equivalent to A-levels in England, and MSA, which is equivalent to GCSEs in England) are taught in small groups over the course of one week. They cover all exam topics and normally require the students to study a lot at home. This is why those courses are offered during school holidays only. The school leaver exams normally take place in May and June (the end of the school year), so courses are offered during autumn, Christmas, winter and Easter holidays.
