I joined PAFCU years ago in an attempt to move my money out of Big Corporate Bank. Unfortunately, I…read morecame to feel even more nickel- and dimed by PAFCU than I did before. Here are a few pieces of information I wish I'd known about PAFCU before moving my money here: 1. Anytime you use your ATM card as a debit card, you'll be charged a $1 fee. The first time I saw this, I thought it was a mistake. It's not. Now I just use a non-PAFCU credit card for everything, which is a bummer because I know it's costlier for merchants. 2. The interest rates PAFCU offers on savings accounts are not competitive. As interest rates have increased well past 4% in the last couple years, PAFCU's money market and savings accounts remain scarcely above 1%. Among its CD offerings, PAFCU offers a deceptive "bump up" CD that locks you into a lower savings interest rate for months at a time with the promise that customers will be able to bump up the rate if PAFCU later increases the interest rate on that CD. Sounds good, right? But even as PAFCU has raised interest rates on other CD offerings, they've left the "bump up" offering the same, so there's no higher rate to "bump up" to. 3. In the last few months, PAFCU has announced that it's ending its free tier plan and moving all customers to the whimsically named "BaZing" checking plan. Of course, these new plans will come with a new monthly fee for paper statements unless you maintain a certain monthly balance. Maybe PAFCU is the best credit union option out on Long Island, but Brooklyn has plenty of other credit unions with better hours, better services, and fewer hidden fees. I suggest taking your money elsewhere.
