What a great find in San Cristobal de las Casas…read more It was a rainy day and we were walking around and getting more wet by the minute, so we decided to duck into the next place for a snack. I'm glad it was this place. Great seating area with couches and chairs, outdoor area some covered and some open to the sky. Books and games are available. We ordered the Turkey breast panini, a green juice and a chai tea. Everything was fantastic, including the service. A great place for food, coffee, to hang out, to get some work done on the laptop, etc..

My husband and I frequented this local cafe a few times while visiting San Cristobal de las Casas…read morein Chiapas, which opened a few months ago. The owner is very sweet and was very helpful in providing recommendations in the area, such as a Saturday organic market and a shop to buy cheese. As are most cafes here, Sweet Beat is in an outdoor courtyard; there are covered areas, and when it's cold (this time of year is!), the owner offers blankets to borrow for added comfort. I loved the look of the chic patio furniture. The atmosphere is laid back and relaxing; I brought a book with me and moved from my table/chair to a couch after I finished eating there on a couple of occasions. Each time I ordered a latte, it was presented with a bite of an in-house dessert, such as a brownie (mmm)! There is a current promotion going where after 5 hot drinks, the 5th is free! The food portions are a bit on the smaller side compared to most restaurants in Mexico (which isn't a bad thing, but you get less for what you pay for and may need to order more food as a result if you're REALLY hungry). When I wanted a side of fruit but didn't see it on the menu, the owner offered to make a 1/2 portion for me, which I thought was very nice and accommodating (and I ordered it more than once during my return visits). My favorite dish was the molettes, which are kind of like bruschetta; each piece had refried beans spread on it, cheese, avocado, and pico de gallo (which you can have with or without jalepenos mixed into it). Overall, each experience here was wonderful and I would certainly return if we find ourselves back in San Cristobal someday. I told the owner I wish I could take her cafe and plop it in Sacramento, where I live. :)
