I've never met Jan Roberg, but I spoke with her recently. I came upon her office's phone number…read morewhen I was researching some unnecessarily convoluted and asinine tax laws that would only happen in the US of A. I felt some stress upon discovering that I may (or may not) be fined for not filing something that until today, I didn't even know was a thing. But as I've learned from a lawyer friend of mine, "ignorantia juris non excusat." For future reference, an adult pleading ignorance (i.e. "I didn't know") isn't afforded the same levels of leniency as when a child does it. So I called Roberg Tax Solutions, because the local (Oklahoma City) tax advisers are either not quick at responding, or are not willing to provide any insight without seeing dollar signs first. I got her voice mail. I figured that was the end of that, but she called me back within five minutes. I have never before had the pleasure of speaking with someone who was so helpful with tax advice. Along with the advice, I caught a hint of her kind personality, and she helped ease some of my stress. It's disappointing that I had to contact someone from out of state to get the help I needed, but at least I got the help I needed. While I don't live in St. Louis, I almost wish I did just so I could deal with a fantastic tax professional like Jan Roberg.

This year I decided to have a professional CPA prepare my taxes. A friend referred me to Chris Martin. I gathered my forms, prepared a long list of questions I needed answered, and headed to Swansea to meet Chris. WOW, what great professional experience. Chris walked my wife and me through all the forms and paperwork, in less than an hour. All questions answered. Chris has a large computer monitor, we could watch him enter the data, and asked questions as he entered the data. I believe he saved us about $2,000, by entering the data into the proper forms. Overall, personable, professional and quick. I'll be back again next year.

After contacting Mark I found he was exactly what several friends of mine (all attorneys, but none of them tax attorneys) told me I should look for in an attorney; someone young enough to still be motivated (not some old stodgy guy in a wrinkled suit, coasting into retirement), yet experienced (preferably with IRS or DOJ experience), and someone not a part of a 'big name' firm (read:outrageously expensive.) Mark is all of these. He knew exactly what to do, and in the end talked me into a strategy that would actually save me money, vs. a different strategy that would have made him a lot of money. Definitely had my interest at heart. He's not cheap, but he's definitely a great value.
