I'll be honest, I came here for the gay cruise scene and wasn't disappointed but I'm sad that as I write this review that a monthly later (June 2016) Taksim was beset by the state police behaving like hoodlums firing rubber bullets and teargas on innocent participants in one of the rare GLBTQ pride parades that can be seen in a Muslim country (or even in Eastern Europe for that matter). Oh Turkey, you have a long way to go to enter the European Union if you exhibit such prejudices and having a nutcase claiming Islam as the reason to enter a gay club and murder 49 people in Orlando, Florida is not helping your case for inclusion.
That said, the architecture, the variety of kiosks and booths to purchase food items or flowers or toys for the tots, the sound of prayers from the minerets and the boom of ocean trawlers out in the Bosphurus make this such a beautiful soulful place to visit.
When it comes to the eye candy scene you don't often get to see Eritrean, Syrian and Albanian hustlers back to back.... and that's just the beginning. As with a multi-layered complex and sweet baklava, peel back one layer at a time and you're bound to encounter a United Nation's worth of hunky hirsute humanity all on the take.... or looking for a good time.... or both. Either way my sensory overload was pleased as punch! I went there from Sultanamet (the tourist zone on another peninsula of greater Istanbul; both are on the Euro side) via taxi but you could easily take the very clean subway. I'm looking forward to go back! read more
