The taxi drivers' rank on Upper O'Connell Street has a statue of the Sacred Heart enclosed behind glass, to protect them against crashes, speeding tickets and truculent/drunken customers. However, this statue has had a tumultuous past.
A few years ago, I was in a cab when the original was stolen, and the only word that can describe the taxi driver's mood was apopletic. I tipped heavily. Thankfully, a new statue was procured and, I can only assume, fitted with a serious anti-theft alarm. Worship from a distance, or you are likely to be rugby tackled from behind. read more
