Terrible experience. Service was slow. Took quite some time before we were able to order. Once we ordered, the appetizers took a painful amount of time to arrive. Then it took another 30 plus minutes to get our food after we were done with the appetizers. We were seated a little after 6pm (with a reservation) and did not receive our main course meals until almost 7:30. There were only 4 of us and we ordered two appetizers, neither of which required cooking. The place seemed chaotic and poorly managed. All that said, the food was decent. Ordered the Gnocchi and the Carbonara. Gnocchi was pillowy and great but extremely small portion for the price. There were less Gnocci on the plate than the number of dollars it cost. The Carbonara was much better portioned but absolutely flavorless. I don't mind paying premium for a great small plate or pasta, but wouldn't be great pasta if it was 13 dollars. I had a wonderful time at Taverna. Came here for date night and the food was delightful. Cocktails were well made. I recommend Hazel eyes-- it's close to an old fashioned with a hazelnut twist. Service was great-- servers checked on our table in a timely manner, gave great food recommendations, and store owner/manager also dropped by to check on us. I would give 5 stars but my only complaint was feeling rushed out of the restaurant when our server was insisting on getting to-go boxes while I was still working on my food. It may have been her just wanting to be kind and provide the boxes before I even asked for it, but overall because of that I felt rushed to leave. This is a great place for Sunday brunch - with a special brunch menu that includes egg dishes. The Eggs 'Bennie' was particularly tasty - as were their special TAV Tots! This is a fun neighborhood spot! The meatball sub during lunch is so good - sub and garlic fries for $12, worth it!!! The bread is amazing. I also tried the sausage pizza - it was really good! You could just tell she was so busy but still so accommodating and helpful. Agree with other review it needed some seasoning or parm. But I'm confused why source your bread from so far away. I started with the Caesar salad, promoted as "eggless" dressing. It was a thinner vinaigrette style, grated cheese,(I prefer shaved) still tasty and considerably lighter than the classic. Very large portion. I followed with the eggplant lasagna appetizer which was served with a side of spinach. Perfect size and very tasty. Partner had the Shells Aurora, he said it was the best pasta dish he has had in some time. Perfectly full, we passed on dessert, but look forward to returning and trying their other offerings. We had the vegan eggplant Caponata flatbread (it comes with goat cheese but we got it without) and Margherita pizza. Our server Angel was great --very attentive and offered great suggestions for our dinner. I opted for the sausage pesto pizza and Angel recommended getting the egg on top. Service was phenomenal with a cheery and enthusiastic server. Ambience was also fantastic along with the tangy and crisp artichoke salad. However, that is where the compliments end. Fried foods were soggy and tasted of reheated leftovers. Pasta sauce tasted disturbingly similar to dollar store jarred "sauce". Pizza dough was extremely chewy topped with sauce that lacked any distinguishable flavor. As a Platinum Group establishment, their offerings were subpar even compared with more modestly priced Italain chain restaurants. read more

This is my 'Go To' spot for great Italian food. I typically have the Free Range Saltimbocca with Broccoli Rabe and then another side of Broccoli Rabe, It's THAT good! That being said, I've had almost everything including the random specials they have and I have never once had a bad meal here. My wife is a vegetarian and they always have something for her and they're always willing to accommodate her by altering a dish that would typically have meat. The atmosphere is great and the decor is perfect for such a small place tucked away on Main Street. The wait staff is typically college students for U of D and they're always friendly and super nice. I gave it four stars because sometimes it's a little warm in the dining room. They have a huge oven that gives off a tremendous amount of heat, I would assume this is the major cause but sometimes after eating, I get the meat sweats and the dining room doesn't help. Try to sit as far away from the oven as possible would be my advice. read more

Had lunch yesterday at Taverna on Silverside road. The outdoor seating was spaced properly apart. Wait staff following mask wearing protocols. We felt very comfortable eating there. The manager, Patrick, checked to ensure our food and dining experience was okay. Best yet was the amazing mushroom, broccoli, goat cheese pizza I had. One of the best pizza's I have eaten. I had the worst dining experience of my life in your restaurant tonight. I went to Taverna with my family. We were served and told we could not split the bill between 6 people. I agreed to pay the bulk of the check with my visa and a small amount on my cousin's charge. We were then approached by the waiter and told that after she left, she did not leave the signed copy. Now I know this is not a big deal, as it happens all the time, but we were treated as if we were walking on the tab, of which I had paid 90% and tipped generously. Then, we were asked if we could "stand up front and finish our drinks there" by Paul, the manager. We wanted to order dessert and more to go but were shuffled away from the table as if we were doing something wrong by enjoying our table and expecting good service. I am absolutely appalled by this treatment, and they should be embarrassed by that waiter and manager who at 7:00 had apparently too many people waiting for me to even finish my wine at the table, let alone, "up front", which is an absolute joke. I ended up leaving a half-full glass on the bar. I had made a 5 pm reservation and nowhere does it state that we had to exit the table in 2 hours. However, we were made to do so in an embarrassing fashion, and quite rudely. We typically FREQUENT your establishment, but no more. Paul needs to go. I've never been treated so badly at a restaurant. You should be ashamed of this manager and waiter. It was atrocious. read more

Food was subpar at best and service was very slow and confused, I will say we had a larger party but some of our entrees didn't come out with the majority of the table (some 15mins later) and then the same with desert? I just have to say we are so disappointed in this restaurant. From $17 overpriced greasy Pizza too sticky overcooked pasta with absolutely no flavor. The chicken in my pasta dish reminded me of the chicken you buy in the store in a bag that's cooked and it was rubbery and just not edible for me. They claimed it was tomato cream sauce I make that all the time not even close. I felt like they cater to a certain age group, certain type of people. Kind of reminded me of a frat house. However, our waitress and the food almost made up for her attitude. The tomatoe olive oil they serve with tuscan bread is amazing especially with salt/ pepper Eggplant parm is fabulous Chicken Taverna is good. Roasted peppers were good. Wed meatloaf night great! I was thinking about this place since it's just opened but didn't try it until today as the reviews are not favorable. Yes, three stars on Yelp is not a good thing to a restaurant, especially a new one. But today I took the girls to see the pediatrics in Quillen building, which is in the same plaza, and the girls want to have pasta for dinner. So we are here, and I'm glad I finally made it, regardless of three stars. First, I like the decor. Simple, trendy and comfy. I like the open kitchen in particular. Then the waitress is very attentive and friendly, and considerate. Instead of ordering from the kids menu, I ordered a Rigatoni & Sausage for the girls to share, and it comes in two plates. The waitress also asked me if I want to have my pasta when it's ready or wait until the appetizer is finished. I ordered an Antipasto with prosciutto, broccoli rabe, and eggplant caponata. Before I get chance, the prosciutto is gone! The eggplant caponata is on the sweet side, but taste good with flat bread. The broccoli rabe is not sautéed, just steamed. I should have noticed it on the menu as I like the sautéed version. But I dipped it in the tomato sauce dipping oil for the bread and it tastes great! The girls love the rigatoni, and my spinach ricotta agnolotti is terrific and I ate it all. No dinner is concluded without an dessert. The Tiramisu is so delicious that I finished in one minute (my younger one is already sleeping on the bench and I need to get out of there ASAP). During the dinner, I kept thinking why it only has three stars on yelp. I don't remember what the reviews say, maybe I should go back to check. But I like it personally, and on this Wednesday evening, it's pretty busy in there. I can't drink alcohol today, but the wine menu looks pretty decent. My first visit was July 10, 2019. I went based upon the recommendation by a friend, who said it was a branch of a restaurant in Newark,Delaware which was considered to be very good. A party of six was waiting in the lobby, they had a reservation, but the table wasn't free yet. Since only two of us we were seated at once The service was quick, friendly, professional. They boast of a coal fired oven for pizza with a temperature of 900° I decided to have a pizza. My companion ordered shrimp. We were both very satisfied. My friend had a beer, a brand he was not familiar, suggested by the waiter. My friend was quite pleased. The restaurant was rather noisy. It was the dinner hour and nearly every table was taken, so I ignored the noise level. It was not so loud that I couldn't carry on a comfortable conversation with my dinner companion, seated on the opposite side of the table. I have out-of-town company coming Saturday, and I am planning to take them there. This restaurant will be a regular for me. read more

Enjoyed our inaugural visit to Taverna on a Friday night. We made a reservation, and it's a good thing we did because the place was full with a Happy Hour dinner crowd. Nicely appointed physical space - didn't feel crowded or that we were sitting on top of anyone else. Service was good although they were busy - our waitress was enthusiastic and pleasant, and quickly was able to rectify the one mistake, where she brought the wrong wine. She was good with recommendations as well. We started with the whipped sweet ricotta, which came with a balsamic drizzle and fresh bread. Really good. We also got a basket of complimentary italian bread just out of the oven, served with a lovely tomato oil dip plate. Really nice starters. I got a cup of the pasta fagioli, which was underwhelming - too much of a tomato base, not enough vegetables or beans or flavor. Meh. Always a strike against an Italian place to me. It's a simple soup that can easily be done badly and is tougher to do right - most places settle and it's underwhelming. Entree-wise we took the recommendations of our servers and ordered two - the rigatoni & sausage and the puttanesca. The rigatoni dish was great. Good flavor, a substantial size portion, and a lot of sausage. Really good. The puttanesca was really good but was not spicy. Served over linguine, our server said she loved it because it really kicked up the heat. I'm not a freak for hot food but this was just a nice tomato linguine with garlic, olive and capers. I was expecting more. Wine was good, beer list was ok. Desserts looked good but we were stuffed. Will be back for sure - thanks for a good time! read more

New rendition of a Newark restaurant, I think. New community on Silverside Road. Very busy, at least right now, with a fresh opening. We had tried before and could not get in, so this Saturday we waited until near 8, and it was still busy, but we got a community table, which was empty and fine. Our hostess was helpful, and our waitress was great! Menu was fairly complete, and the food was very good. Wife had a special agnolotti ravioli item and I had the braciola. All well prepared and tasty. This is an area very thick with GOOD Italian restaurants, and we know them all well. Nicely decorated, nice bar, rustic furnishing, and upscale image. Oddly, and I mean very oddly, they serve their red wine at 56 degrees! This flat out stopped us at the first glass. We talked about it with our server and she said we were not the first to complain. The Manager came over and said "that is cellar temperature, and the proper temp for serving"... Wait What? We have been in cellars, France, Italy, Sonoma, Napa, and visited wineries in 20 US States. We have dined in some of the finest cellared restaurants in many states, and the recognized Best Wine Cellar in Delaware, Domain Hudson. WE HAVE NEVER BEEN SERVED COLD RED WINE! Not NYC, not LA, not Bordeaux, not Napa. So this foolishness alone cost the 2 stars it might have had. A nice dry, aromatic, red makes our dinner, and it is impossible for those characteristics to present themselves in cold wine. Oddly........... read more
