The pottery business of Sarah Culbreth is truly exceptional. Immediately upon stepping out from the car and into the gravel driveway leading up to her shop, my friends and I were greeted by a puppy who was clearly excited to have visitors, given his wagging tail and ample supply of dog kisses. Once inside the shop, Sarah was the first person to greet us, and she quickly escorted us through a hallway to her ceramics studio where she sat us down, brewed us a fresh batch of Fair-Trade Organic Coffee served in her own handmade mugs, and began creating a beautiful masterpiece on her turning wheel. She engaged with us, answering our questions about her history as a potter and educating us on her art form. We spent nearly an hour in Sarah's shop before leaving, and I feel we could have stayed much longer if our schedules would have allowed. The hospitality that Ms. Culbreth extended to us was unmatched in any other business I have visited in Berea, and I already have plans to revisit Tater Knob Pottery in the near future with family. I would be absolutely stunned if you get a visit a friendlier business with a more welcoming staff than Tater Knob Pottery. Sarah, a Berea College Alumni and owner and operator of Tater Knob Potter for 28 years, is such a joy to talk to and full of enthusiasm when she greets her visitors and displays her amazing pottery work. Sarah is to first to admit that the business's location is in "the middle of nowhere," but it makes the people and products associated with the business that much more of a treasure. If you're in Berea, take the drive out to Tater Knob Pottery and spend an hour or two talking with Sarah, observing the wonderful pottery work she has completed and is in the midst of working on (she might just give you a demonstration of how pottery is made), and enjoy the forest view from their wonderful abode. Pottery With Charm; heartwarming art. I visited with my friend in search of another artisan. We did not find him there, but we did not leave either because of the high quality of art that was available and mostly because of the amazing hospitality of Sarah Culberth, the artist. She welcomed us into her pottery, told us to make ourselves comfortable then and offered us punch and some tasty fresh organic French roasted coffee. She then went on to engage us in the history of her trade while showing us how she does pottery; yes, she threw for us to experience even though she had not planned to throw any that day. The product of that throwing was a beautiful vase that I felt attached to because I watched it coming to life through the artistry of Sarah. When we walked in, we got one of the warmest greetings I have ever received from a business. She made us some coffee and tea then we sat down out back to talk, we had a presentation to give. What a warm lady after we finished talking she went on to do demonstrations of her making pottery. She says she does this for everyone because of how far she is from the main road. She wants them to have an outstanding experience and it was. She then let us look around out the pottery out front that is ready for sell. What beautiful shapes, colors, and patterns. One of my companion had a few months of pottery skill and he was blown away by the pottery here. I ended up buying one of the candle pots for my Mom and Dad. Sarah is amazing it may be nine miles out of town but the drive is beautiful and the ending destination is great. Her shop is very little and cozy. She offers anyone that comes through the door coffee or a cold soft drink which is hospitality if I have ever seen it. She also shows everyone who takes the time to drive out that road how she throws and trust me she is a very good thrower. She made three bases of coffee mugs while she was talking to us which then she will let dry the pain and crave for a company that have already purchased them from her. She had very interesting work I love just looking at what she has done and how much she is willing to teach to anyone who stops by. read more

This shop is tucked away on Wolf Gap Road in Berea,KY. The owners are very cordial when it comes to meeting new people; they offered me coffee, and dessert when i walked in. I think the owners,Sarah and Jeff are very brave for operating their business via word of mouth, and brochures instead of through social media tools.They do have a website but they conveyed to me that they do not update it. The great thing about this place is that all the pottery is made in the shop. The owners also offer to ship items that customers order to them at no charge to the customer. Sarah is an amazingly talented and hospitable women. When my colleagues and I visited her studio we were welcomed with warm smiles. We were given wonderful refreshments and were seated to watch Sarah make her pottery designs. Our visit was very interactive as we were able to ask questions and touch some of her work. She was very willing to answer questions and you could tell that she has a deep passion for her art. My experience was a one of a kind experience and Sarah even ended the experience with a hug that left her clay hand prints on the back of my colleagues and I shirts. read more

For 32 years now, Sarah Culbreth has owned and run the Tarter Knob pottery in Berea. The Tarter Knob pottery is a locally well kept secret that has however managed to catch the attention of New York Times, Home and Garden TV because of the quality of pottery work they produce. The gallery and the studio are located out of town in a farm, it is worth the drive to this place. I had an amazing experience at Tater Knob Pottery and Farm. I was there primarily for the pottery and had the opportunity to see a vase being created from a lump clay. I loved how easily I was able to find the establishment despite the fact that it is so far from the main road because there are plenty adequately sized signs that direct you all the way. The wide range of earthenware was amazing; ranging from pen holders to dishes. I would recommend Tater Knob to anyone, whether a lover of earthenware or not. read more
