I don't actually play golf so I came mostly just to drive the golf buggy around. Despite not knowing much at all about golf, I was very impressed by the course. It is a bit of a surprise actually because you don't expect it just seeing it on the road, but drive up and over the hill and you are welcomed by sweeping views of the sea and the Hen and Chicks islands. It is really spectacular. These views are your backdrop for the entire course. The course itself is really nice. By this I mean the grass looks nice, and dad kept saying he liked the course so...yeh. My boyfriend is a beginner and dad has been playing for years and both were challenged and entertained by the course. Like most places you can start on the front or the back nine or do all 18 holes. Both halves have great range and diverse terrain. The club house is really nice and has a nice balcony over looking that great view making it perfect for a drink after a round. I was obviously very tired from driving the cart around all day and a gin and tonic in the sun went down veryyyyyy well.

It's actually more North-West rather than South, which is a tad confusing. But anyway, it's a nicely isolated course surrounded by mountains, and it is generally pretty well looked after. Some of the fairways and greens can get a bit rough in places, but on the whole the course maintenance is good. The rolling fairways are very nice and make for a pretty decent challenge. Another great thing about this course is that it is cheap; usually $20-$30 will get you a full round of 18 holes. Bargain! We played a tournament here, and afterwards had food and drinks in the clubhouse. The staff were very accommodating. Note: Most golf courses operate from first light until last. This changes depending on the time of year of course, but generally the opening hours are around 7am - 5pm.

You should be fit, as courses tend to include about 10 kilometers worth of walking. You should be prepared; study the course layout and par savers, and your head must be in the right place. I personally play my best game when a) I've had a few practice putts and swings at the ball, b) I've enjoyed a hearty breakfast and c) worked out my course plan. Plus having nookie the night before also does wonders for my game. Playing South Head is great for golf, as you never play this course without being prepared in advance. Nobody ventures this far from base station without planning the trip properly, and this adds to the value of the course. She's normally in excellent nick, and by being so well prepared, you do tend to play better because of it.

The weekends however were a tad busier, as are most golf courses, although the waiting times became quite a nuisance so I made it a priority to play during the week. The course provides great variation, with holes long and short in the front 9, testing all aspects of your game, with the back 9 featuring long straight holes with trickier greens, particularly their positioning. The drainage problems experienced during winter have been fixed and Akarana is a great course for all levels, providing a nice challenge especially for beginners.

Anyway, enough about me and my strange grass fetish, let's move on to more about golf. This course is both beautiful and challenging. Those hard greens can be a curse sometimes as the ball just wants to keep on rolling, especially on the downhill slopes. On most days it is quite expensive to play here, but on a Monday and Tuesday it is an incredible bargain at almost half the price; too good to pass up really. Another advantage of playing this course is its central location, not too far from most places around the city.
