After only a couple months, I was seeing signs of relief, not just in the affected areas, but in many other areas. My lower back opened up, I gained flexibility, and found increased vitality and stamina. It's important to note that I didn't just experience relief from pain or the ability to manage pain, but have gained some actual healing and strength. It hasn't been an instant-fix miracle: the process has been gradual, but that's the Tai-Chi way: taking the time to build real strength, to re-orient your body to move through the world in a healthy manner, not just masking symptoms. I'm feeling healthier than I have in years, and am so grateful to have stumbled upon this school. Be careful going with your run-of-the-mill, community-center, inauthentic Tai-chi programs. The old Chen style, taught in this way with a blend of Eastern and Western teaching styles, is the real deal.

In fact, my father would sometimes walk with us in the mall and stop mid-pace just to bust out a tai chi stance and movement just to embarrass us in the middle of the mall. Regardless of those family antics, I was able to develop as respect for the practice despite it not being an active part of my life. Fast forward to last month. I help to lead diversity and culture initiatives for our employee resource group at work and was brainstorming some fun and interesting ways that we could celebrate Asian Pacific American heritage. I thought tai chi on the rooftop would be interesting, fun and a great way to introduce the exercise to a young audience. I reached out to the email on the website and had the pleasure of connecting with Peter Schwartz. Although, the school does not consistently offer private classes, he was willing to work with me and was within my budget to lead a 1 hour class of tai chi at our office. Although the turn out was less than what I hoped, Peter was warm, knowledgeable, patient and literally went with the flow. Also, prior to arriving he was communicative and arrived on time, despite rush hour and a storm. Overall, I had such a great experience and would definitely encourage anyone to consider tai chi as an exercise that is accessible and inclusive to so many!

But these older adults be out here putting in work! Classes: I took a Bodypump class. If you've taken it once, you've taken it. Buttt I still enjoyed the class as a whole. Gym itself: okayyy, this gym is deffffff dated. It's on the smaller side, but I haven't been to the floor - only the class areas and locker room. The locker rooms are kind of gross. They smelled like chlorinated sewage and are just kinda grimy. Lots of hair (gag) and dirty lockers. Defffff bring your shower shoes. Showers have body wash/shampoo and conditioner. I also saw lotion and blow dryers and multiple scales. It's not my favorite place but I'll be back for some classes because I like OneLife's class offerings.

OneLife Old Town Alexandria update January 2026…read more Looking back to July 2025 when I first reviewed Onelife Fitness - Old Town Alexandria, VA, things have only deteriorated. Apparently corporate management determined not to allow any additional time between the end of the 11 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday Tai Chi classes and the noon start of Functional Lab (on Tuesdays) and BodyPump (on Thursdays). As a result, participants in the Tai Chi classes are still in the room at 4 minutes to noon, because management has elected not to change the schedule to permit more time in between these classes. Today the Group Fitness Director was personally present before the start of the noon Functional Lab class, and deflected concerns raised by participants waiting to get set up for the noon Functional Lab. She dismissed those concerns: she imagined, hypothetically, that participants in the Tai Chi classes would reject the schedule change, saying that if the 11 a.m. class ran from 11 to 11:50 instead of 11 to 11:55 a.m., it would appear that this was a "Tai Chi Lite" class. That hypothetical seems to ignore reality; it also permits continuing disrespect shown by the Tai Chi instructor toward both her peer instructors and participants in the noon classes. As the Fitness Director personally witnessed today, the Tai Chi instructor was still holding class at 11:56 a.m., disregarding the schedule. Whether this approach is due to the Tai Chi instructor's deliberate disrespect of the incoming class (and the respective instructors) or simply her inattention to the time, management has yet to effectively address this problem.

Her demo of the Cheng Man Ching form was easy to follow and beautifully choreographed. The class is centred around the Cheng Man Ching 37, which turns out to have 60 plus movements--the 37 refers to the number of unique movements and some repeat throughout the form. Kris also has some great relationships with other instructors who occasionally make a guest appearance and provide demonstrations. Classes are held weekly, with 14-15 classes to a session, which is sufficient time to learn the basics of approximately one-third of the form (with some practice at home). Students are also given access to videos to help their practice between classes, which helps enormously! Personally, I have found Tai Chi both rewarding and challenging. It takes some physical and mental stamina to master the moves--which is a great distraction from the rigors of an otherwise busy life. The amount of effort expended is up to the individual, students range from 13 to 83 years of age all advancing at their own rate. Tai Chi has improved my own balance and core strength which has positively impacted other sports such as skiing and cycling. I like it, and would recommend that everyone tries it!

I was a student at Potomac Kempo (PK) for about 4-5 years, and I was sexually assaulted by one male…read morestudent and sexually harassed by another from this dojo. These incidents took place before covid. They were not ok then and they're not ok now. But I would not be writing this review if an adult instructor at the PK Kingstowne dojo had not been arrested for multiple counts of "carnal knowledge" of a minor a few years ago. Worse yet, there had been problematic behavior involving another teenager at this dojo and I can draw a direct connection between that and the above incidents. In 2019, an adult instructor and a teenage female student at this dojo began interacting under questionable circumstances in a questionable manner. Both denied any wrongdoing, but the behavior was highly inappropriate regardless. I insisted that PK address the situation. Although management ultimately responded with the requisite seriousness, it took repeated prodding by multiple adult students. Afterwards, I was vilified by a gaggle of paid and volunteer instructors across dojos. It should go without saying that no minor should be spending time alone with his/her adult instructor at odd hours in odd places without parental knowledge. Just as important, even if nothing happens initially, something is very likely to go awry if the adult and teenager continue to put themselves in situations that offer opportunities to slip up. This is basic knowledge you'd expect from anyone in an authority position over minors. Unfortunately, multiple PK instructors betrayed an appalling degree of ignorance, if not outright recklessness. A gossip factory thrived, and the resulting culture fostered an environment hospitable to sexual predators. In late 2021, after multiple PK instructors had vilified me for over two years, the previously mentioned instructor from the Kingstowne dojo was arrested for sexually assaulting a male teenage student. I had moved out of the Northern Virginia area by then due to a family tragedy, and I've not had time to write this review until now. What I'd like to see first and foremost is accountability for reprehensible behavior and changes made to prevent future sexual harassment and assault. In particular, I'd like to see the following written in black and white as PK employee policies AND conveyed as mandatory requirements to every paid and volunteer instructor at formal training sessions. 1. No adult instructor, from any of PK's dojos, should be spending time alone with a teenage student outside of the dojo, under suspicious circumstances, in an inappropriate fashion. PK should not assume that an instructor understands what "inappropriate" means and hence must make sure each instructor is properly educated. 2. No adult instructor and teenage student should LOOK LIKE they're dating, involved with each other romantically, or engaged in inappropriate physical interactions, even if no actual physical contact is taking place. 3. No adult instructor should go out with or have sex with a teenager even after she or he reaches 18. Every parent who sends a child to PK would instinctively know why such behavior is totally unacceptable, even if it's not illegal. I have no evidence that this has occurred at PK, but I did find it disturbing that some of the instructors appeared not to have the slightest understanding of this basic concept. 4. Any instructor who violates the above policies will be suspended or prohibited from teaching. 5. Any instructor who seeks to thwart PK's enforcement of the above policies should be suspended or prohibited from teaching. Instructors who have engaged in such behavior in the past will be required to sit down with a senior member of PK management and will be informed, in no uncertain terms, that their past behavior will no longer be tolerated. If PK were to enact these changes, I will delete this review.

The cost is $240 a month. So if you can only come one or two times a week, this is definitely not the dojo for you. There are no other pricing plans. Evolve All is awesome and I am pleased to leave a review of them…read more I recently checked out Evolve All since I was in town but wanted to train (muay thai/striking) in a friendly learning environment. I was in town for such a short time that it'd be better for me to drop-in classes rather than buying a monthly membership. Evolve All was just the place for that. The owner, Emerson, made me feel welcome when he responded to my inquiry saying that he'll find me someone who'll work with me. That special attention to individuals is definitely what separates a warm/welcoming gym from the rest of the pack. When I went to train, I saw how beautiful the space is. Green and white mats lined practically everywhere. Coach Elijah worked with me and another student and I can honestly say that if I were still in Arlington, VA (I returned to Philly), I would be a member of Evolve All because of my interactions with the staff/coaches, the facility, and the training + community there. Overall, Evolve All is a great family-oriented gym. I can't recommend it enough for anyone who is searching for their next spot to train and looking to level up while still feeling like part of a friendly/welcoming community.

There was hardly a contest, in terms of the welcome my roomie and received, as well as the kindness of the staff and owner. I chose a BJJ membership where I have the opportunity to join about three classes per week (as a beginner, more as you grow), access to a weight-lifting space, and free reign to practice rolling when there is a free mat. I CANNOT speak enough about the amazing crew that runs EvolveAll. The owner and general manager take the time to truly make you feel welcomed and excited to be in their space. The instructors are of the highest level and ensure that you understand new moves and drills on an individual level. They make sure to invite experienced members to the beginner classes so that way new members can train with someone who's comfortable with the movements. I HIGHLY recommend EvolveAll for individuals of all ages, skill levels, and fitness. Every class starts with some conditioning, goes into a couple of moves, and ends with optional free rolling.
