Even before Jamie W and I arrived, I knew a trip to San Miguel de Allende would not be complete…read morewithout a visit to this classic churro cafe. It was the place that chef Pati Jinich proclaimed as the best churro purveyor in town on her PBS TV series. Located just a block east of the city's social hub, Jardín Allende, the cafe was quite chaotic on early Saturday evening. No surprise there was a lengthy queue. While it was moving quickly, the menu was nowhere to be seen. By the time we got to the counter, I just improvised our order on the spot. We went with a couple of the MX$120 French Chocolate sets which afforded us both a Hot Chocolate and a Cajeta-Flled Churro. We added two MX$11 Plain Churros just because we wanted to try their signature item. The advantage lies in the freshness. The churros come right out of the fryer and into the bowl dusted with sugar and cinnamon. The contrast between the crispy, sweet exterior and the soft dough is what makes the churro stand out. The cajeta added sweet indulgence, but truth be told, the plain version was decadent enough on its own (Photo 9). This was especially true when we dipped the churros into the rich, piping hot chocolate (Photo 8). Luckily, we were able to snag a cafe table that became available. It was only when we sat down that we noticed the full extent of their menu which includes empanadas, enchiladas, and Mexican breakfast plates. We also saw all the framed posters and magazine covers on the walls and realized they all featured the owner, famous soap opera actress Margarita Gralia, Mexico's answer to Susan Lucci. FOOD / DRINK - 5 stars...like really fresh donuts but the hot chocolate is the most essential ingredient AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...chaos but evocative SERVICE - 4 stars...fast and cordial amid the chaos TOTAL - 4 stars...trying the churros is a must...just takes effort to get them RELATED - Exploring San Miguel de Allende? We kept coming back, on our trip to San Miguel de Allende. A must visit if you're here! Honestly,…read moregetting it to take out is just as good as dining inside. The chocolate is piping hot, and you can enjoy it sitting somewhere by the plaza. My partner really likes his churros filled, so we tried a few varieties. We tried rompope (like a spiked eggnog), which was creamy and had a nice kick. Later tried the cajeta (goat milk caramel), and my boyfriend the lechera (like a condensed milk)- the cajeta was lighter and sweeter than I expected. I think our fav was actually the rompope, which we also hadn't seen made elsewhere. Honestly, there's nothing like a fresh fried churro. When in doubt just grab a bag of the plain. You can see them frying them to order, and with huge pots of chocolate. I recommend the chocolate with milk over the one with water. Might as well go all in. The churros are crisp and sugary on the outside and a little moist in the inside. Definitely an institution.

The Rosewood is such a classy hotel Jamie W and I were feeling we might not be quite up to snuff to…read moredine on the rooftop here. However, the staff didn't make us feel that way since they gave us the table with inarguably the best view of the city during the most photogenic time of the day, magic hour at sunset (Photo 3). How did we get so lucky since we made our reservation just the day before? And what better way to start than with a pair of MX$340 Carajillos, the Mexican version of espresso martinis (Photo 7). The use of Licor 43 lent a welcome sweet spiciness to the deep espresso and fit the moment perfectly. We were happy to receive a complimentary serving of warm Focaccia topped with a wedge of liver pate, olive oil, and chives (Photo 10). It was a nice surprise quickly devoured. Our first shared dish was the MX$365 Ensalada Luna, a hearty and enticing mix of greens, stracciatella cheese, speck ham, fresh peaches and figs, and quinoa in a citrus and vanilla vinaigrette (Photo 4). Our entree was the MX$406 Tacos de Lechon Rostizado, a trio of roasted suckling pig tacos with crispy skin cracklings, red onion, and fresh green salsa (Photo 5). The pork was fork tender. Nestled in a flour tortilla, the soft pulled meat stood in nice contrast to the crack of the skin. We went for a second drink, but this time a mocktail, the MX$195 Chilate, a refreshing alcohol-free blend of cacao, rice, cinnamon, and raw cane sugar in a coconut shell (Photo 6). While awaiting our dessert order, we were surprised by a complimentary Happy Anniversary dessert, a bit of a head-scratcher. We didn't say we were celebrating anything, but hey, we didn't complain. The sparkler was already lit and the staff was harmonizing. It was a chocolate ganache cake with blueberries atop puffed rice (Photo 8). That didn't stop us from enjoying the crispy-sweet MX$289 Churros with cinnamon ice cream and champurrado chocolate sauce (Photo 9), while entranced by the nighttime view (Photo 2). FOOD - 5 stars...really delicious with unique and fresh ingredients C(M)OCKTAILS - 5 stars...everything went almost too smoothly down AMBIANCE - 5 stars...the best view in town, hands down SERVICE - 5 stars...they put in a lot of extra effort TOTAL - 5 stars...for that special evening in San Miguel de Allende RELATED - Exploring San Miguel de Allende?
