This is probably one of the best tacos I've had in a very long time. I asked friends what good taco spots are good in LB and someone recommended Hole Mole. Another friend said it's overrated and you must try Tacos Chapala. I went yesterday and got 2 Pollo and 2 Pastor tacos. So good! My girlfriend got the Cali Burrito as well. I came here on a friday night around 9pm. The place is kinda small, and the parking lot is super tiny - you'll most likely have to find street parking. The area is also a little sketchy looking if you're not use to living in the eastside of long beach. The cashier was very straight face and gave off the most unwelcoming vibe ever. I ordered three pastor tacos and one asado taco. My boyfriend got a pastor sopa, a lengua taco, and two pastor tacos. I believe the lengua taco was $2.25 and he was super disappointed that he spent that much on such a plain and dry taco. The pastor sopa was overwhelmed with the white cream sauce and even with the sauce on it, you can taste the dryness in the meat. I was super disappointed in my pastor and asada tacos; they were flavorless, super dry, and pretty expensive. I left unsatisfied since my cravings for tacos were not fulfilled. Came here tonight (wed) around dinner time and there was a line but not too bad. Ordered both soft tacos and hard shell tacos. Asada Lengua Carnitas Pollo The place is small, have few tables but clean. We ordered to go. The hard tacos are still relatively crispy and not too greasy. I like the asada the most, very juicy very flavorful. Lengua (tongue) is alittle bit more chewy compared the others but pretty tender for tongue meats. You can taste the different flavor for the different meats. They had two different homemade salsa, one mild and one spicy. Came with chips, onion & cilantro, lime. Tacos are $1.75 each except for lengua. Decent size. They are regular, not mini tacos. I would definitely come back for more, especially taco Tuesday. Overall service is good, very customer oriented. This is like a hidden gem of taco places in Long Beach. The first time I've tried their tacos, I got hooked! Very tasty and serving was good. If I'm craving for tacos, I only go to either Tacos Chapala or sometimes at Hole Mole (just because of the shrimp/fish taco). The only problem I see is that parking is limited. Oh no. I'm a fraud. Turns out I like my "Mexican" food with loads and loads of cheese, too bad that's not too authentic. Event this review is fraudulent, it's more like 3.5 stars, but I feel so guilty that my own love of Fakexican food is the reason I don't like it. I love me some meat too. It's basically your choice of meat (fatty-boom-batty al pastor, for me) and your choice of how you wanna eat the meat. One-handed? Burrito. One-and-a-half-handed? Taco. Two-handed? Torta. No-handed? After an entire Holiday weekend of reading taco reviews, I was just dying to get out and satisfy the carne asada craving, and tried calling a few of these places yesterday, but they were all closed on New Year's Day. Ventured out today to Tacos Chapala, since it's closer to me than a couple of the others Holly'd been to, and had a yummy, yummy experience. Chapala has a tiny parking lot (venture in at your own risk) located on the corner of Obispo and Anaheim, but the service is indeed friendly and fast, and the tacos were just the right thing. Beware the "hot" salsa. I felt the need to stick my head in the sink after eating it (ok, so I poured it over my taco: bad idea) just to put out the flames. This place....is the bomb!! There is no other way to describe it. It is in walking distance from my house, which comes in handy after a night of drinking and not driving. I had lunch here today, based on the recs of Yelpers. Sadly, Tacos Chapala was a complete disappointment. They seem to get plenty of business, thanks to their convenient location, but this place would be more of a last resort spot for me (as when you buy food at a convention center, since they have a monopoly and it's too inconvenient to go elsewhere). :: NOTES :: - Semi-bitchy and minimum-effort service (three women behind the counter) - Horchata was totally watered down (probably about 70% - 80% water) - Meat in tacos was dry and bland (I tried three kinds: carne asada, pollo, and lengua) There's NOOOO love in the food...whoever does the cooking isn't someone who loves feeding people, and doesn't care about serving up tasty, memorable food. The only consolation is that the meal didn't cost much (just a bit over $6 for 3 tacos & a large horchata). There are much better taquerias in the area, if you go down several blocks in any direction, so if you can go somewhere else, please do--you'll be glad you did. Cheapest veggie burritos in town. $2.11 with tax for a burrito the size of your forearm. EXTREMELY friendly/helpful staff. I wish this place had free chips/salsa, and they claim they're in the process of getting a chips/salsa bar, but 6 months later and it's still not happening. Not as greasy as my other local favorite (Casa Sanchez) but still pretty good. If I don't feel like being sick/greasy feeling for the rest of the night, I'll pick up a $2 burrito at Tacos Chapala. Added bonus - best fountain soda around!! I'm not sure what it is, but you know how some places just have GREAT coca-cola? This is one of those. Tacos and Salsa are Good. I'm a very hard to please on tacos; I've eaten TJ tacos for years.. and even though this ones are not TJ tacos this ones are very good. Had 2 fried tripe (tripas) and wish I had more..order them to go..the place is small and they DON'T HAVE A/C. Saw the employees suffering and felt bad..uf anyone knows the owner please rely the message.. Is 100 degrees outside if you want customers make the space breathable!! I tried this small local joint on a Tuesday for Taco Tuesday. I want to start off by saying there is limited parking, so we had to park in the neighborhood. Also, inside is very tiny (2-3 tables max), so anticipate ordering to-go if you come here. It is also very clean inside! I saw the $1 Tacos on Taco Tuesday sign outside which brought me in. Unfortunately I was saddened when I saw inside that the $1 tacos only applied to: asada, pastor, carnitas... Lengua tacos are my favorite so I was disappointed when this wasn't on the $1 tacos list. So rumor has it that this is authentic Mexican food. And you know what, I learned that I don't like Authentic Mexican Food as much as I thought. Turns out what I like best is White Guy Mexican Food: Carne Asada, Sour cream, Cheese, Guacamole. The End. What I got here was more of a beans, rice, and meat situation. It was still good, and plenty big, but each bite I took felt like something was missing. I was in denial, till halfway through I accepted that my dairy ingredients were sparse, or absent altogether. But I wasn't gonna just give up after one try. Luckily, their Nachos Chapala saved the day. All the gringo-y stuff I missed in my burrito was piled high on their nachos: cheese, sour cream, guacamole, even some cilantro to kick things up. These are damn good. And and I'm pretty sure if I tried any food I didn't like here, it could be rescued by their fantastic sauces. The mild green is good, but the red is where it's at. Smokey, spicy, robust, smokey. It's real smokey. But it's the best part about this place. Should also mention they have Carnitas roasting on a spit. I am very sad to change my review. Being a loyal customer for years ( really my whole family)... The last year I haven't been in much, but the last two times... The food has been horrible! 2nd to last visit, we ordered a bunch of hard shell tacos one night .... And we where sick for a week later. Yesterday I went in, told the lady about my horrible taco experience, when she asked why I hadn't been in for a while, and ordered a nacho. I wanted an Asada Nacho with extra beans.... Waited, took my food to go and took my food to go, because it was so hot inside. When I pulled over to a nice shady area, began eating and ... No beans. I went back in, not mad, just hungry . The cook, looked pissed... Grabbed my nacho and just stabbed on a pound of beans.... It was horrible . I started to walk out side, started thinking and decided I was pissed. Not only did I send them a load of customers, but I paid almost $10 for a nacho that was horrible.... I went back to ask for a new one, since he ruined the first attempt. Good food, great staff, great price. They use a vertical rotisserie and you can see it when you order. Food: 4/5. They have good food, especially the carne asada, rice and refried beans. The tortillas I've had have never been stale (I've had about 4 to 5 my whole experience here). Service: 4/5. They're attentive, polite and quick. It's usually the cook that hands me my food and he's nice too. Appearance: 3/5. They outside looks a little shady and they're located next to a place that sells water. When you see a place that sells water.. just water.. that's a clear sign you're in/near the ghetto or other less desirable locations. The inside is small and the tables aren't the greatest. Price: 5/5. As of 9/2011 the value doesn't get any better than this (prices could change in the future as this place gets more and more popular). They also accept cards and don't add a surcharge like their greedy competition does. It's actually illegal to add a surcharge for using a credit card, btw. Cleanliness: 5/5. I've been here about 8 times in the last year and I've never seen a dirty table or noticed any other kind of filth. You can even see the kitchen very clearly and it look's neat as well. Overall: 4/5. This is one of the better places for burritos and tacos in Long Beach, much better than the chains in the area. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys a great price on good food.
