There's a sign that says this place has the best tacos in town. That's not true at all. Overall, it's a relatively quiet place during the day. I tried a vampiro nopal (cactus), a pastor taco, chips, and an asada mulita. I have to say that the vampiro, taco, and mulita were not good. They have a bar that has hot sauces, guacamole, and salsa. The salsa tasted really off. The hot sauces were forgettable. The guacamole was nondescript. The walls and tables were well decorated; so well that the very plain, white foldable chairs felt very out of place with the whole theme.

My wife and I stopped at Tacos Calafia on Mill, known for authentic, simple Tijuana-style street tacos, burritos, mulitas, and vampiros. The name Calafia is a nickname for the microbuses (or "calafias") found in Tijuana. They offer handmade tortillas and staples like carne asada, al pastor, and chicken, with several locations in the Phoenix area. We ordered some street tacos, a quesadilla, and a couple of horchatas. The food, though flavorful, had small portion sizes and, in my opinion, was overpriced. We spent $40.00, and I left still hungry. They do have a nice salsa bar with various salsas and toppings to customize your tacos. Overall, the food was pretty good, but as I said, a little overpriced.

I was on Mill for an event and was looking for a place I could get a soda from and walked into this location. There's not much to it. Pretty open with concrete floors and tables in the middle. You order in the front and then have to pick up from the very far end of the building. Kind of a strange set up. I would imagine that they probably are there strictly for the drunk crowd. I tried the frijoles preperados with the Al pastor. Wasn't to bad for $4.

The family and I went to the Tempe parade and stopped by this place in the evening to grab a quick bite. It's relatively dimmly lit but they had ample seating. I ended up ordering their keto version of taco which had some shredded meat inside a cheese taco. It was absolutely delicious and I really wish I could have ordered more (but we had to walk the parade and didn't have much time). You do also get a condiment/side station where you can get grilled onions (also delicious) as well as sauces and guacamole. I would highly recommend if you're in the area to hit up this place.

Took a fun pic while waiting in line!

Great food! Long, long wait on a Sunday afternoon during the Tempe Blossoms event. Tables were dirty. Service was less than cordial, but the street tacos we got were definitely worth all of it! The beans had brisket in it! Fabulous salsa bar. If you're patient, you'll love it!

Receipt

Tacos Calafia at 414 S Mill Ave in Tempe auto-charged a whopping 23.77% tip ($4.75 on $19.98 burrito subtotal) for a solo dine-in--no prior notice on menu or receipt. This is a strict counter-service spot: order upfront at the front door, pay, grab a number, wait for your name/number call, then self-pickup from the kitchen counter, no waitstaff table service whatsoever. The "exuberant automatic add-on" felt like a total rip-off in a fast-casual taqueria pushing Tijuana street tacos, not fine dining

I ordered pollo burrito and it was delicious, interior was nice atmosphere, with different color lights employee's were nice. The chef was nice as well as the background music. Self serve bar i would come back again for sure next time. Thank you so much.

If I could give Tacos Calafia a ZERO star review I would, on the simple principle that their customer service is appalling, I was not satisfied with my order and requested a refund for the food I did not eat and they flat out refused, telling me it's my problem. Aside from bottom of the barrel customer service, their food is exorbitantly expensive for the portion and quality you get. A small, barely filled "taco" is 2.99 EACH. The Mulita is basically a tiny greasy quesadilla for $5.99 (same size tortilla as the "taco"), Vampiro is pretty much a little meat on a tortilla chip for $5.49. I wish I was joking. Additionally, what they don't tell you is if you order online for carry out (even through their website directly) the prices are inflated compared to if you had called in the order over the phone or placed it in-person. I was searching for some super yummy street tacos tonight but couldn't remember or find any of the local pop up ones that set up in a parking lot typically. So I turned to TikTok in hopes to find a spot to try out for the first time. Came across Tacos Calafia and a lot of people seemed to recommend it, so I thought why not give it a try. Little did I know what I was in for... once I picked up my order I was extremely disappointed in the portions and quality of what I had ordered. I was under the impression that for $40 I was ordering a meal for TWO. What I got was NOT THAT. I asked for my money back and they outright refused. They did not offer to make it right what so ever. All in all if you're looking for good tacos that aren't a rip off, DO NOT GO HERE.

Wonderful little place been walking by this place quite a few many times on my way to work and never stop to try this place cuz I always used to go to down the street to another place their competitor but these people deserve all the praise as well. I hope these people get lots of business during the holidays and more namesake mentions. Tuesday is Taco Tuesday and it's 20% off Thursday is quesadillas 15% off They have a paleta's promo where if you review them they will give you a free paletas but you must show proof They have taco Tuesdays 20% off tacos Thursday quesadillas 15% off and Friday nacho Taco nachos $1

Really good tacos spot, they have the Al pastor trompo only on weekends I think. The carne asada and Al pastor are very delicious, the tacos were good and it's location on mill make it a great place to start the night!

Carne Asada (Steak) Burritos

Awesome steak burritos at an affordable price. Don't walk by the restaurant because you'll be missing out. Plus they have a great staff and fast service.

Out of all the restaurants I had before leaving Arizona, THIS ended up being one of the places I couldn't stop thinking about after I moved away. Ever since leaving, I've randomly craved these tacos constantly. I've tried other taco spots in Denver hoping something would compare, but honestly nothing really hit the same. So when I came back out to Phoenix recently to visit some friends, this was one of the first places I knew I needed to come back to because I had built it up so much in my head over time. And somehow... it was just as good again. The meat tastes incredibly fresh, flavorful, and well-seasoned, and you can literally watch them prepare everything right in front of you, which makes the whole experience even better. There's something so satisfying about seeing the tacos being made fresh instead of food just appearing from the kitchen. You can tell they care about quality and consistency. The servers were also super friendly and welcoming both times I came here, which honestly makes such a difference. Everyone had great energy, the service was quick, and the whole place just feels inviting and authentic. I honestly think the fact that I remembered this place so vividly for so long says everything. Usually when you revisit a restaurant after hyping it up in your head for years, it ends up disappointing you. But this place tasted exactly how I remembered it, fresh, flavorful, comforting, and absolutely worth the obsession. Safe to say this place is officially a mandatory stop for me anytime I'm back in Phoenix now.

We also use to love the sushi side. During Covid, we tried the sushi for the first time. We were hesitant as it's a Mexican joint, right? Not a Japanese specialty shop. So to my surprise, I couldn't believe the sushi especially the Las Vegas roll and their Nigiri cuts were pretty dang good. My disappointment seems to be this last year with the sushi just hasn't been the best or fresh tasting. The Las Vegas roll was always nice and warm but with an awesome cold center and fried to perfection and the sauce just right. Lately it's been the opposite. Super over fried were all you can taste is old burnt oil and it dried out and the sauce just bland and not helping at all. The other thing that bothers us is the lack of wasabi they give! If you're not going to give us full flavor, at least give more wasabi to help mask. I will say they give you plenty of soy sauce packets (just barely any wasabi).
