Not sure if new owners took over, but this location has severely went downhill. The last few times the guacamole tasted like they use frozen avocado, definitely not fresh. It no longer has onions or chunks of avocado like it used to, and has a very strong citric acid taste for the same price. Ordered the empanadas like usual, this time they were cut open and stuffed with toppings with barely any meat. Usually all the toppings are on top and they are closed. My son's quesadilla had very little meat and the cheese was not even melted, he thought it was corn on it. We're always on the lookout for great Mexican food and I can confirm that Taco Libre's flavors are on point. The birra tacos in particular were incredible! The only thing we can knock them on was the amount of grease seeping through their burritos. This was the first time I've had to use a fork to eat a burrito, the structural integrity of the tortilla was totally compromised. But like I said, incredibly tasty. Highly recommend. How is it possible that this place is even better than last year?!?! We live in Mac Groveland and haven't been out to West St. Paul recently, but on our most recent trip for Taco Libre, we had either forgotten how great this place is or the food somehow got better! We ordered two machetes (carnitas and barbacoa), elote (the corn cobs were massive), plantains (I am drooling thinking about that gooey sweetness), a kids' taco meal (he loved the marshmellow treat!). I do wish that the Carmel goat's cheese sauce highlighted the goat cheese flavor more. That noted, their google ordering does not give all the options available, so we recommend calling in (so you can get the Machete split and so you know that the churros are on the menu!) I ordered the empanadas and a machete with carne asada and tripe. I asked for the tripe to be made extra crispy, however, what I received was the opposite. The tripe hadn't been made extra "dorado" (crispy) and it ruined half of my machete which I ended up tossing. I had no idea what to expect from this establishment, my partner upon learning that I had never in my 33 years had elote started googling and found this place and that it was still open a little later in the evening on a Sunday night. So we made the trek from south of the river to west Saint Paul and immediately I was drawn in by their colorful decor and then by the menu. We had to step back to make a decision and ultimately decided on splitting the 18" machete, two elote, a side of rice, and chia seed lemonade. We got about 5 of their sauces/salsas and liked them all quite a lot. The lemonade was unique and not that sweet but tasted fresh and complimented the food a lot. I honestly wouldn't ever think to myself man, I could go for that chia seed lemonade on its own but truly it was a great sort of palate cleanser and refreshing in between us stuffing our faces. The elote was great but I also have no frame of reference of how good comparatively to others, the machete was on point with all the different salsas, the rice was a small cup I would liken to a slightly larger condiment cup-for over a dollar. Don't get me wrong we got all this for about $22 but if I'm paying over a dollar for a side of rice give me twice as much as that tiny cup! I will say that their booths need attention. The seats are torn/ripped and the broken parts were stabbing me in the legs, even if they slapped some duct tape on there it would be better than the current condition. My boyfriend and I came here for late night cravings because they were open until midnight. High five, Taco Libre. And on Fridays and Saturdays, they're open until 1am! Fist bump, Taco Libre. This counter-serve restaurant is located in a small strip. If you were driving by it and had never heard of it, I can promise you you wouldn't look back twice... I mean, maybe at the lucha libre mask, but it's unappealing and cheesy otherwise. Walking through the door, I immediately felt a liveliness - the kitchen was playing traditional, festive Mexican music and the cashier was very welcoming and mellow. Inside was very clean and spacious. To the left, the menu takes up the whole entire wall. You can get tacos, taco bowls, taco plates, tortas, alambres, tamales, etc. It was 9pm, I was in my sweats and glasses, and there were still a good handful of people dining in or taking out. I imagine this place gets pretty busy during regular lunch and dinner hours. We both ordered the Machetes ($8.99) because of food-entertainment - who doesn't want a two foot tortilla? The cashier asked us if we wanted to try some authentic Mexican drinks. I always like when restaurants can take their culture into their own hands and properly represent it. I have been to some Chinese restaurants where they have looked at my white boyfriend and then recommended "Sesame Chicken" when I know for a fact that there are better, more authentic Chinese food options available. So, a major kudos to the employees! I really enjoyed the Machete! It comes with lettuce, sour cream, Oaxaca cheese and salsa. We had one with steak and the other with chicken. I liked the chicken (juicy, plentiful), but I felt that the steak (medium well, non-chewy, plentiful) was more savory. It also worked better with the flavors of the tortilla and sauces. The sauces are a self-serve type of deal. There are several choices in a separate side-cart for you to pour all over your food. They also have extra lettuce, guacamole, tomatoes, etc in case you want to add more to your plate. It was the sauces that really sealed the deal for me. They were authentic and very flavorful. Because it was so late, some of the sauce bins were empty, but luckily, we still had a few options left. I don't remember what it was called, but I got a spicy red sauce that I drenched all over my Machete - absolutely amazing. My mouth was on fire, but I liked it... in a weird Rihanna type of way. Decided to try since my entire family had been grilling me to do so. I'm glad I did! Some of the best authentic tasting tacos in town. We ordered beef, chicken, and pork tacos, elote, slice of caramel glazed cake, and a horchata. Wow! The tacos were delicious. What I enjoyed most were the tortillas tasted crunchy. They were not just plain old flat tortillas. I loved that! The meat used was superb and they had an area where you can choose between hot or mild sauce. Simple delicious. On the other hand, the Elote was not very satisfying tho. Way too sour, and the corn did not taste sweet. Usually Elotes are made with sweet corn to counter the sourness from the limes and the spicy flavors from the chili. But not this one. Maybe it was the luck of the draw that day. The new location is cavernous and gives everyone space to loosen up belts for a grande huarache or a machete- The Silver King sized house specialties. Came here for the first time today with my mom and brother. Love the theme and atmosphere of the place, it's quite original. The music in the background was pleasant to listen to - Maná and Enanitos Verdes were playing and they happen to be 2 of my favorite bands! :) Service was fast. Food was delicious but on the greasy side. I had a machete with half pastor and half tripa, a little messy to eat but that's ok. My mom had 3 tacos (1 tripa, 1 asada, 1 cabeza), she said they were too greasy. My brother ordered 1 alambre al pastor, he liked it and I tried a bite and it was just OK. Not a big deal except I'm lactose intolerant and ordered "no cheeses, no sour cream on my Machete please." The worker stated "okay so you don't want either of the cheeses, absolutely no cheese and no sour cream right?" "Yes" I reply. I get home after 30 minutes of waiting for my food when I was quoted 8-10 minutes only to find out there is cheese on my taco. Not a big deal but I wanted them to remake it because I literally can't eat it. I called them up and I was gonna get in my car to have them remake it but then the manager got on the phone. "So what's wrong with your order" he said. I explained and he kept fighting with me "well you only said no to one of the cheeses so that's why there's cheese on it" No I didn't.... I'm lactose intolerant I never eat cheese. This is not my first rodeo. On top of that it clearly states on the receipt "no quesos, no crema" that's quesos with an s which means no cheeses. WOW!! Do you remember that feeling back in high school when your first meet that girl or that guy? Well I just got that feeling from Taco Libre. I think I have found my new favorite taco place. We had worked late and thought we would give Taco LIbre a try instead of going home to make dinner at 8pm. Since this was our first time here and we were hungry, we took the opportunity to order a selection of menu items. My wife ordered the chicken bowl. Silly rabbit. I ordered 5 tacos, a tamale, their fresh orange drink and some churros. The tacos I ordered were Asada, Picadillo, Pastor, Pollo Ala Mexicana and the Champinos Con Queso which is one of their vegetarian tacos. Yes vegetarian. Their moto here is So Fresh Our Ancestors Would Be Proud. This was evident upon our first bite. Our tacos, bowl and tamale were made fresh and arrived rather quickly while I was enjoying my fresh squeezed orange drink This was fresh squeezed orange juice that was very light and refreshing. When they brought out our tacos, then nice gentleman said something is Spanish to us. I assume he said to enjoy the order Gringo or something to that effect. ha-ha. The chicken bowl was just huge. Someone wrote a review on here that stated they make Chipotle look like Taco Bell. I'm going to have to agree with that statement. The Asada was flavorful and fresh. The Picadillo was tasty. The Pollo has a nice balance of sweetness from the onions and acidity from the tomato. The Pastor might be my favorite with crispy edges of juicy pork and sweet pineapple. Tied for my favorite was the Champinos Con Queso which was mushrooms and cheese. That was so good! I would be proud to call myself a vegetarian and eat those tacos.I was busy enjoying my tacos that I had forgot about my tamale. The tacos are served on a 6" corn tortilla and they do not skimp on the fillings. As I was finishing my tacos and my wife was getting ready to pack up her bowl with hardly a dent in it, our kind server returned with a plate of hot fresh churros with a caramel dipping sauce. He could have proposed to me at this point. What he actually said to us is that our churros would be brought out later. Great touch to wait and bring them out at the end of our meal while they were hot. Another nice touch was they served my tasty mushroom taco on a separate plate from all my meat tacos. Prices are very reasonable as our entire meal was under $30.00. If you are able to channel your inner Matt Stonie you can order their Machete. Its a Volkswagen sized burrito that is under $10.00. I don't normally visit fast food places and certainly don't Yelp review them. However, this isn't your normal fast food and this is not some American taco dog joint. These are REAL street tacos!!!!! And street corn! WOW! You can spice it up as you want. I think they are keeping it tame for the people of West St. Paul. I need to ask them for more heat next time. What a stellar first visit!! The menu reminds me of Chipotle or Qdoba with the setup (choice of taco, bowl, etc), but the options are much more authentic. THEY HAVE COTIJA CHEESE!!! That alone accounts for 2 of the stars. The place is immaculate and well organized, the menu is just the right size and the portion-to-price ratio is very healthy (at least 4 full meal servings out of the $8 marinaded chicken bowl I ordered). My fiancé ordered the Machete and it must have been 20" long, the equivalent of 6-8 tacos. He had it with huatlacoche and liked it. I also ordered their jamaica which is a hibiscus tea, dark purple and very fruity and hard to find up here. Theirs is much better than Los Ocampo's version- Libre's is less sweet and much darker which means it's stronger because they steeped the hibiscus flowers for longer (think of tea, light vs dark for depth of flavor). Excellent prices, beautiful food, and the opposite business model of Chipotle: all chicken and toppings, with a little mound of rice and black beans underneath. These people know what's up. Pumpkin flower and Mexican truffle, unique for sure!! Biggest rip off so far this year. Their advertised prices are about 25% cheaper until you get into the store to buy it and find out that they have a different price at the restaurant and they won't honor what they have on their website. On top of their exorbitant price, they charge even more for almost all their meats to go on the food. How did it all taste, it tasted like about $10 but instead it cost me $21.99. What a dream this place came to WSP! My boyfriend and I went in here one day on a whim and I got the machete. I always love cilantro and pico. They were happy to give me those. It's always slightly busy but they are fasssst!! The food is so delicious. I would recommend the street corn and the machete. This place has great Mexican food. Tacos. Burritos. Tortas. Menudo. Etc. The tacos I've got here have always been delicious. The interior is nicely equipped with a good amount of tables and chairs. However the past couple times I've been in have always been busy so the dining area can get busy. One neat thing - there's a heavenly wall mural depicting two Lucador figters in the style of Micheangelo's The Creation of Adam. The churros at the Costco food court has got NOTHING on this place.
