Wonderful quick Mexican place. For fast causal dining it doesn't get much better in the area. If you like spicy salsas they offer 3 different salsa the will satisfy that craving. Compared to chipotle qdoba and Pancheros this is the winner hands down. Probably better sit down restaurants but this was great casual dining. read more

Ok, I'm going to try to be as constructive as possible as always when I make a one star review. It was recommended by someone that lives close by. We got the Alambre Azada and a Beef Burrito. Beef Burrito: WHERE WAS THE BEEF? nowhere to be found, it was a rice burrito, sadly my hubby had horrible stomach issues after that. It was plain and no flavor, so we said they try ALL THE SALSAS they have available to see if we can spice this baby up... Mmmm that was a bummer. The salsas had no flavor, they were from super spicy to just smash tomatoes. Alambre Azada:. I got to see some beef here. Yupi!!! But sadly it was 80% cut onions and peppers and 20% beef. So for a strip mall taco place if you are not Into REAL MEXICAN food, avoid this place. If you like Mexican you won't go wrong with this place .Their menu offers something for everyone , kids or adults , vegetarian or meat lovers , for the spice lovers play it up with their flavorful salsas , Mild to hot it's a trip on its own. Ive had their West St. Paul location bookmarked for quite awhile but still haven't had a chance to try them out so I was pleasantly surprised to see a "now open" sign on this new Oakdale spot. I've been here twice now - once on their 2nd day open and again last night and I have to say that I'm pretty impressed. It seems like the go to item for most people here is the machete - a long (18+ inch) taco with a hard shell made out of a masa tortilla (similar to tamale dough) and then filled with your choice of meat and toppings. They looks pretty damn good but I haven't made my way to that section of the menu....yet. Instead, I've ordered the Alambres Pastor both times I've been here and my daughter had ordered the Alambres Asada both times. Neither of us were disappointed. The meats are flavorful and perfectly cooked and combined with peppers, onions, Oaxaca cheese and bacon. Yes....bacon. All this goodness is mixed together, fried up and sent out hot and steaming with your choice of tortillas. I have, on a couple of occasions, had better Alambres but they always involved airfare and the risk of food poisoning (sometimes that risk is worth it). You pay for a bag of chips and then help yourself to the salsa bar - the salsa selections were all good. Not great, but certainly good and plentiful. Other high points: mexican street corn was excellent, the agua de horchata was awesome and the service is fast and very friendly. Also can't forget to mention that the Jarritos are ice cold!! They also have tamarindo, a red drink called Jamaica and fresh orange juice. I also tried their chicken tamales - they were good with white meat chicken and good dough but they werent anything special. It would be nice if they offered a version with a spicy chicken filling. My only knock on the place is that it's a little confusing/overwhelming when trying to figure out what to order. Better explanations of the options and pictures would be helpful. All in all I love this place and will certainly be heading back to try out the street tacos and, of course, that machete. read more

We went in to see what this restaurant offers for the first time. The prices were pretty high so we just ordered the quesabirria to share - was supposed to be 3 barbacoa tacos. The tacos were pretty small but did have a lot of good quality meat. Could have been a little more flavorful. They had lots of salsas but most were too spicy for me. What really got this 2 stars was no fountain drinks, only bottled drinks, and no ice, and no water if you don't like soda...except of course to buy a bottle of water. So your drink options are a bottle of soda or water that gets warm quickly and have no refills. So I won't go back just for that reason. (Plus being rather pricy) read more

Very good street tacos! Would for sure come back. I got one tripe and 2 beef cheek tacos and they were seasoned and cooked very well. Service was fast and friendly! The only thing that made this experience a 4 instead of a 5 star experience is that 2 orders we had out of the 4 were overcharged. My fiancé ordered 4 tacos and somehow got 6? And my friend ordered 2 and got 4... so that was weird, we didn't say anything though cause we ended up eating them. Overall pricing isn't too bad. Similar pricing to other Mexican places that do street tacos. $2.75 a taco. They also have this machete one which is like 18 inches long with 2 meat toppings for like $11. I called in, that part was fine... well until I just learned that they don't tel you they keep the other half of your food since the boxes are not big enough for the items on the menu. I will never go to any of these again. The food was not good on top of it. I emailed Taco Libre about how unsatisfied I was with the food I ordered on Sunday. Apparently one of the items I ordered was cut in half and I was only given half. I guess only half fits in the to-go container. Where is my other half? Or why was I not discounted? Or, even more so, why was the box not bigger?? The food was terrible and not portioned for the price I paid. And they admitted that in the email but not when I called in for the order. The guy, Brad, doesn't seem to care. Why would I ever want to go back or recommend this place. Total waste of my money. Don't go here they don't care about your satisfaction. Assigning stars to my review of Taco Libre was a conundrum for me. I read all the positive reviews and looked forward to eating there. The atmosphere was light and inviting with upbeat Mexican music playing. The offerings are different from "American Mexican" restaurants so I'm guessing they are authentic Mexican but I cannot confirm this. Like similar "fast food" establishments, you order at the counter, get a number and your food is brought to your table. You get your own drinks or are given a beer from behind the counter. A few vegetarian options are available and it was a little confusing understanding the options (street tacos, American tacos, bowls, plate, huarache, burrito, etc.) but the person behind the counter explained everything. I ordered two vegetarian street tacos: flor de calabaza - (pumpkin) and raja con queso (cheese, onions, poblano peppers). Both tacos were good but just a tad on the greasy side. We ordered guacamole and chips. The guacamole was good and had a nice bite to it. Chips were served in a paper bag; the guacamole in pre-made plastic to go containers. I also ordered the Chiles Toreadors (jalapeños fried in lime juice , salt and pepper). The clerk told me these were really good. I like spicy food but I took one bite (after removing the seeds) and I honestly thought I was going to die! I couldn't breathe, turned red, tears streaming down my face, and broke out in a sweat! It took more than five minutes to begin to feel normal again and hours later, my tongue still burns! Was surprised there wasn't some kind of warning (like on the offerings at the salsa bar) for this side. Fortunately they were not expensive because I didn't go back for a second bite! Not sure if these were a particularly spicy batch of jalapeños or if this is the norm. Would I eat here again? Maybe but with limited vegetarian options, there is not a lot for me to choose from. My first experience at Taco Libre lived up to the hype! The service was fairly quick for a busy lunch hour! The staff was super nice and very willing to answer any questions that I had. I got the "machete" which is an 18" masa tortilla with lettuce, sour cream, oaxaca cheese and two meats! I chose the beef cheek and barbacoa! While this might not be super "authentic" it hit the spot and filled my craving for Mexican style food! I did not that their normal tacos stay much more traditional with a tortilla, onions, cilantro and lime! We went here for takeout today and it's been more than an year since we visited last. Taco libre did not disappoint, we ordered the quesadilla, empanadas and bowl with grilled chicken with a tamarind jarrittos and guava drink. We ordered takeout and had a short wait while the food was being prepared in front of us. Everything was packed perfectly and tasted awesome. The guava drink was fresh and cool, perfect for the heat wave we are facing.. They also have some baked goods at the ordering counter and we picked a bun to share with our evening coffee. Bun was authentic with a mildly sweet vanilla flavor. All in all, we were reminded why this was one of our favorite places to eat before the pandemic. First thing when I walked into the restaurant was that I noticed their was no air conditioning. It may have either been broken or they were just not running it. This made it very uncomfortable so I had to take it out to go to eat. I ordered the steak platter with beef tongue on the side as well as chips and guacamole. I enjoyed every single bit of it and everything tasted amazing. The guacamole was very limey and the chips were mildly salty and were made to perfection. The platter includes a side of rice, beans, lettuce, tomatoes, tortillas, and the meat itself. The steak seemed to be grilled really well and was still tender and juicy with every bite taken. Yes, I'm a fan because the food is as close to what I can get being 2000 miles away from California real Mexican street tacos. You know the tacos are good depending on how the Al Pastor meat is made. The salsa can use an upgrade on taste. The salsa really kills the tacos but I guess if you have grilled jalapenos it will just have to do. First time here! First off, the salsa bar, THANK YOU!! To be able to get my own salsa for my to-go order was honestly my favorite part ... Until we got home and sunk our teeth into our tacos. I got the street version, he got the American. Both great! (Street tacos = Corn tortilla, cilantro & onion and American = Flour tortilla, tomato & sour cream). We mutually loved the Tinga de Pollo and Barbacoa, so much flavor!! The pork, however (both Carnitas & Pastor) was lacking a little. Didn't matter to us tho! We were hungry and looking for a good place to eat with a 21 month old and a 4 month old. It took a lot of back and forth before we were able to finally go in and check it out. We were very hungry and hoping this place wouldn't disappoint, and it didn't! We both ordered the steak machete. It was very delicious. I was worried I would still be hungry, but I was content. The machete itself was greasy, which I enjoyed, but others might not. That's because the masa is fried. My 21 month old had a chicken quesadilla. She seemed content. I liked that they had a soda machine with many options. We also got an order of the guac and chips. The guac had a hint of lime, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I am giving this place 5 stars because we really liked what we ate. We will definitely visit again before our trip is over to try more options. Executive summary: Solid food, suburban gringo pricing, and stop cutting corners on the little things. I went today for lunch. Colleague had the machete, I had nachos. The quality of the food was good, and there was a nice variety of salsas at the salsa bar, all of which were tasty. The tortilla they use for the machete gets very chewy after being grilled, and the lack of respectable cutlery made it difficult for my co-worker to eat. What made it so hard? Cheap, plastic utensils. Dude broke his knife trying to cut his food. (Was he supposed to eat the two-foot-long taco like it was finger food?) Seriously guys, is it going to kill you to run the dishwasher once or twice a day to wash metal utensils? If you're going to charge someone 11 bucks for their plate of food (and that's before adding a drink), can you at least give them something respectable to eat it with? The food comes out on really attractive, long, ceramic plates, and people are eating with sporks and bendy knives. C'mon. Do better. And that brings me to the pricing, which is the real reason I won't be back. As someone who lives in downtown St. Paul, I'm a stone's throw away from any one of a number of establishments either in Dayton's Bluff, along W. 7th, or in West St. Paul that do the same type of authentic street food at prices that are 30% cheaper. Tavial Grill does alhambres for $8? Taco Libre wants $11. Taqueria Los Paisanos does tortas for $7 a pop? Taco Libre wants $10. You can put the food on fancy long plates, but it's still street food that you're eating with throwaway utensils. A smart consumer isn't going to let you have it both ways. You can't serve the populist food of the masses and then send people out the door with $15 tabs. I understand that may fly with some highly sheltered folks in Washington County who would never dream of driving to a predominantly Latino neighborhood to eat - someone might break into their Range Rover. But if you're willing to eat Mexican food in Mexican neighborhoods next to actual Mexicans, you're going to find a ton of places in the metro that do the same food at the same quality at far, far better prices. I'll charge you two cents for my advice. Taco Libre would give you the same advice and charge you three. read more

This new restaurant offers authentic Mexican food at a very reasonable price. I had the chicken torta with a side of grilled jalapeños and my friend had two street tacos. Both were satisfying and tasty. My torta was very filling; grilled chicken, lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream, mayo and a tiny bit of refried beans smeared onto both buns (next time I'll ask them to grill the buns). The grilled jalapeños are only for those of you who can handle some major spice! I THOUGHT I could handle these as my threshold for spice is pretty high. Nope! I did manage to eat an entire jalapeño and the flavor was amazing. There is a condiment bar that offers different salsas, cucumber salad with avocado, and pickled cucumbers with onion. I really enjoyed this place, if you can remember what chipotle was like when everything actually tasted fresh. I started out kind of baseline with a shredded beef American taco and was very happy with it. Aside from the generic there is also Beef cheek, suadero(which I've always wanted to try) and crispy tripe that might wait till last.
