This review is from the point of view of an American traveler.
I would give this place ten stars if I could.
This place is awesome, but it is best to know how everything works here before you go.
First, dinner will last about 3 hours or more. This is not a grab and go. This is a sit, relax, and enjoy. You're treated like family.
Second, CASH ONLY. No credit cards. But Roberto said, if you don't have enough and you want to order that extra bottle of wine or a nicer one he'll drop by your hotel the next day and pick up the difference because he doesn't want you to worry about money.
Third, they make almost everything to order as to keep quality high and waste low. With that said, they use 3 wood fire ovens to cook everything and the roasts can take over 5 hours to prepare correctly.
So, in a matter you're not used to, call the restaurant and order what you want in advance.
A strange concept, but it's wonderful.
Roberto will walk you through the process and what is available. Availability is dependent on what the fisherman have caught that day and what he was able to pick up from the local farms.
He'll ask how big your group is and what you're looking to get out of dinner. Roberto will make sure you order the right amount for your party.
For large groups they offer a suckling pig, but we didn't have enough people or didn't have enough notice. Next time I won't make that mistake.
The weather had been bad so it was unknown what fish would be available for our dinner, but we were able to order a whole duck and goat.
We arrived and were greeted warmly and shown to our table. Roberto explained how the night would go. He assured us that our table was "our table".
We didn't have to rush, there was no one waiting for our table, and we were allowed to be there until they closed at 1am (our reservation was at 7:15pm).
The other big thing he asked was is if we wanted to be treated like Azoreans, and the answer to that question should be yes.
Our meal started with the traditional bread, jam, oil and cheese.
For an appetizer we were asked if we were fans of rabbit. Roberto serves wild rabbit that he has hunted and warns to be careful because they might not get all the buckshot out.
It is delicious.
We knew what we would be getting for our entrees but we added the ribs.
DO NOT SKIP THE RIBS.
They are amazing and he says it's the one item he'll always make a few extra of just in case.
For sides we were served, sweet potatoes, rice, and potatoes that were roasted with the goat.
The roasted dishes were served in terra-cotta dishes and but only smelled lovely but were exquisite.
The goat was probably the best goat I have ever eaten. We discussed the dish with Roberto and learned that goat was not a popular dish on the island and we were definitely surprised because of how expertly he prepared it. He also told us it was only about 2 months old which helped with the tenderness of the meat and the very subtle flavor.
The duck was perfectly seasoned and roasted while served on top of fresh orange slices. The skin was crispy and the meat was juicy. It was hard to pick the best part and to share with others.
It was a glorious feast.
When we couldn't think we could eat more, we ordered dessert.
We ordered the Ice Cream with Traditional Cookies and a Lemon pie and we were gifted a slice of the Dona Amelia Cake to share between the four of us.
The ice cream was perfect, smooth, luxurious and delicious. The lemon pie was stunningly lemony with the appropriate amount of sweetness. The Amelia cake was as the best we had in the island.
The meal finished with an aperitif for all and this ended an absolutely fantastic meal from a gracious host.
Roberto, thank you for having us in your establishment and I hope to return soon.
If you've made it this far, I hope you realize this is an excellent establishment and a NEED TO VIST restaurant. read more
