This review is solely of the food, the service from the waitstaff was perfectly fine and they were quite kind. We ordered lumpia as a starter, the chicken adobo w/ sinangag (garlic rice) and the bicol express. Lumpia: it was fine. The sauce was a thinner sweet/vinegary sauce, but the flavors felt very mild. I expected the sauce to either be punchy with its acidity or its sweetness, but it did neither. Chicken Adobo: this made me sad. The chicken was tender and juicy, but to call it adobo misses the essence of what makes a dish chicken adobo. It was closer to a cantonese soy braised chicken than adobo. It lacked any vinegar flavor, no peppercorns, or bay leaf undertones. Bicol Express: this was made with cod, which was well-cooked, but again - the flavors were so mild, it felt like a la croix of bagoong and coconut milk, empty with a faint hint of flavor. Bagoong is such a beautiful ingredient with strong umami and salt flavors. This dish tasted like salty coconut milk. There were peppers, but absolutely no heat. The desserts looked interesting, but we couldn't muster the motivation to try because we were so disappointed with the other courses. read more

I love that the word "Tabachoy" is a fun term of endearment. Busting chops is the best! We began with the starter sampler, which allowed us to try all three appetizers. TheTabachoy Caesar salad was unique and flavorful. They use chili oil, which adds a nice kick (not overly spicy). For our mains, we had Pork Adobo, Beek Steak, and the Tofu. The garlic rice is a must! The Ube Soft Serve Ice Cream was the perfect way to round out the experience. I should have ordered my own instead of splitting it! Since I am obsessed with bathrooms in general, it is worth noting that you must walk around the outside of the building to access the restrooms. Otherwise, you'd be shlepping through the kitchen, and nobody wants randoms breezing through and potentially contaminating their food. This is not a sketchy area, so you won't feel the need to beat someone with your purse in self-defense on your return trip from the loo. We really enjoyed our experience. Felt phenomenal to fill up on Filipino food for my first time in Philly! This spot is usually poppin so you'll want to get a reservation there at least a day or two prior because it's a cozy little place! It was definitely busy when we got there. After a long day of exploring, it was nice to go somewhere with a curated menu that was all hits. I'm honestly glad to have not been overwhelmed with too many options to choose from. Unless you're looking for a ton of options, expect to have a more narrowed down menu but with amazing dishes to choose from, many of which are shareable. We started with the egg rolls and followed that up with the Pork Sisig dish paired with garlic rice. As a Filipino myself, this felt like home but a little more elevated. Comfort food at its finest! Honestly, sharing those few items was already pretty filling but we decided to order 2 desserts because they sounded amazing. We got the ube sundae and the pandan cheesecake! It was the perfect way to close out the meal and we left full and happy. I highly recommend this place - check out the menu in advance and you'll definitely want to make note of it being a BYOB or wine spot! There's a community refrigerator that you can contribute to if you have any unopened beer/wine that you don't want to take with you. So glad we made this one of our dinner stops during our quick trip the Philly last weekend! A friend recommended it to us and we were able to get a reservation online the day of -- lucky us! It's a super small place, so I highly suggest making a reservation if you can, but you can always take your chances by just walking in. We don't have many casual Filipino food options in Orlando, so this was a real treat. Most of the plates are designed for sharing/family style, so if you're able to go with a party of 4-6, that's the way to go so you can try more things. The entire menu sounded amazing and I just kept wishing my stomach was a bottomless pit so I could order it all. The table next next to us had 6 people and I'm pretty sure they ordered everything on the menu, and omgahhh was that a beautiful table. I was tempted to take a pic, but they might have found that to be creepy lol. After looking at photos on Yelp to determine the portion sizes (and knowing we wanted to save room for dessert), we started with the lumpia and ordered the pork sisig and garlic rice to share. The lumpia (egg rolls) were served fried to perfection with a sweet, yummy dipping sauce. The sisig was great for sharing and came to the table sizzling with a fairly raw egg in the center, but once you mix it all up it cooks right away. It was just the right amount for two people to share. I'm so glad we saved room for dessert because we ordered two -- the ube sundae and the pandan cheesecake. Both were phenomenal and even better when combined. We were absolutely stuffed after this, but we definitely ended the meal on a sweet note. One thing were were not aware of before our visit was that they are BYOB when it comes alcoholic beverages (there are none on the menu), so be sure pick up your favorite bottle of wine or a 6-pack of beer beforehand. I came here for my birthday dinner and had a nice time. We ordered a sampler platter, bicol express, humba, Filipino spaghetti, the kinilaw (unpictured), garlic rice (unpictured), and the ube sundae. Overall, I enjoyed coming here! The sampler platter is an even, balanced portion of everything. Their take on a Caesar salad was delicious, and the chili gastrique served with the lumpia was a fun take on the sweet chili sauce that I grew up with. I admit that I didn't read the menu closely enough, so when the Bicol express came to our table and I saw that it was fish I was surprised LOL, but the fish was soft and the coconut sauce was creamy, herby, and spicy. The Filipino spaghetti was fun--it's a departure from Jollibee spaghetti for sure, but still delicious. My family is not from a region of the Philippines that makes humba so this was a new experience--y'all, this was my favorite dish of the evening. It's succulent, kind of smoky because of the little onions, and tangy. It was amazing paired with garlic rice. Ended the night with an ube sundae that was soft-serve and also had turon. My Favorites were the lumpia spring rolls (crispy and well seasoned) and the Caesar salad was a nice flavorful surprise with their take on it . Pork Sisig - honestly it was a miss for me, not necessaily what I had expected. It had a sweeter/tangy flavor (likely from a lot of lime) that we had not been expecting. Not terrible! The South Philly Laing was a great vegetable side, the portions were good. The ambiance: It is small and often packed so it gets pretty loud and crowded which wasn't ideal. My friend and I came on Wednesday (definitely make a reservation because it was PACKED) and tried the tasting menu ($50pp). We got to try a bit of everything and had so many leftovers, so the tasting menu was definitely worth it. All the appetizers are AMAZING. The lumpia and the wings, SPECTACULAR. The wings were ginormous!! and tasted so tender. If anything, I'd skip the Caesar salad but even that was delicious (and a nice palate cleanser amongst the fried food). The Ginisang Halaan (little neck clams) were SOOO flavorful and I'd highly recommend this dish. If we hadn't ordered the tasting menu, I wouldn't have thought to order this dish but it was such a pleasant surprise! The pork adobo was great as well, although it felt slightly overcooked. However, the flavors were still delicious! The GARLIC rice is also a MUST!!!!! The BEST BEST part of the dinner was definitely the ube sundae. I would definitely come back just for the ube ice cream!!!! So creamy and tasty! We also tried the Turon which was a banana spring roll of sorts. It was quite good as well and reminded me of fried ice cream for some reason. If you're only ordering one dessert, however, I would 10000% go with the Ube Sundae. When we learned that Tabachoy had opened a brick-and-mortar restaurant in South Philly, we could not wait to check it out. Just by looking at the menu and from the pictures posted by other Yelpers, the food sounded promising. We kicked off dinner with the Ukoy, a sweet potato and carrot fritter topped with 2 shrimps. The sweet potato and carrots were sliced super thin that when it was deep fried, it turned into a giant cluster of fried batter. You cannot taste anything except for fried batter. For our mains, my husband and I share the Lechon Kawali and the Pork Sisig. The Lechon was chewy and I could not eat more than 1 piece. The Pork Sisig was very one note and I got bored of eating it pretty quickly. I asked my husband what his favorite dish of the night was, and he responded unenthusiastically, "the garlic rice". Still, we hoped Tabachoy would redeem themselves with dessert. Between the 2 options of the ube sundae and the pandan cheesecake, we chose the ube sundae. The restaurant had its own soft serve machine for the ube sundae, and we were expecting a ton of ube flavors. Unfortunately, the ube sundae also did not meet our expectations. Came here for dinner tonight and had the most incredible experience. Food and service both receive a 10/10. Chance the owner took care of us today and he was so kind, attentive and humble. The food blew my friend and I away. We were planning another date to come back and dine here while we were eating dinner. Everything was outstanding! We started with the Tabachoy Caesar, which was refreshing and addicting. Completely different Caesar and a dish I would recommend to start your meal. Very big portion and we had leftovers. We shared Pancit Bihon, Pork Sisig and garlic rice. The pork sisig with rice was everything. Pay that extra $2! Loved how crispy the pork belly was and it was very flavorful. My friend said the pancit was her favorite dish of them all. It was saturated, which was different but full of flavor. For dessert, we shared the Ube Sundae and Pandan Cheesecake. I had reservations for solo dining Saturday night. I'm glad I made reservations ahead of time since this place seems very popular and it's super small inside but cozy! There are artwork on the walls and some counter space in addition to table seatings. This place is BYOB and you order things ala cart. The items are meant to be shared so you can get the most out of the dining experience :) I wanted to try a bunch of things based on Yelp reviews so I started off with pork lumpia. Very crispy and had great pork flavor throughout. Easily my favorite food I tried during dinner. Then I ordered the pancit, the bbq ribs and a side of garlic rice. In previous reviews people said the meat would fall off the ribs and I was expecting that. My ribs were a bit overcooked to be honest and did not fall off the bone. My ribs were also fairly small. I saw the family next to me order ribs too and they seemed like they got way more and bigger rib pieces (I'm curious now how they portion each dish out). The garlic rice was good but needed more garlicky flavor. The pancit was 10/10 fantastic. I would def. Get that again. Adding the lime to add additional tartness to the savory noodles? Um yes please. Great food with great service. The ambiance fits the family style concept. For starters, we got the lumpia which was excellent, crispy, and freshly hot! The dipping sauce was nice and tangy which enhanced the lumpia flavors very well. Next we got the bbq pork ribs which were so tender and so flavorful. The meat just pulled off the bones! After spending many years in southern California and working alongside so many wonderful Filipino nurses, Filipino food became close to my heart. Philly has finally started to get some restaurants over the past few years, but I'm happy to say after eating Tabachoy, this place has become my favorite. Tucked into a small building on an inconspicuous block in South Philly, Tabachoy is charming and quaint. I accidentally made a reservation for the following day, but the staff was nice enough find a seat for us to enjoy dinner and not have to battle traffic back on 76. I highly recommend making a reservation. The food was incredible. Unique takes on classic dishes. We came for the sisig. Quickly becoming our favorite meal during our trip to the Philippines, we've sought out this crispy, salty, vinegar-y dish every Filipino restaurant we go to. Weirdly hard to find, Tabachoy did not let down. I would come back for this alone. However, all of the other food was top notch too. Enjoyed our dinner at BYO Tabachoy the other Saturday--Tabachoy's reservation system just switched from Tock to Resy. A South-Philly converted row home, Tabachoy's dining room is relatively small and access to the rest room is out the front door and around the corner. For 4 diners, we ordered an assortment of dishes to try: Pika Pika/Starters: - Ukoy (gf, shrimp, carrot, sweet potato, fish sauce, cilantro fritter served with chili vinegar), which could very well have been heavy, but because it was perfectly fried, it was light and crispy! Lumpia (fried pork spring rolls with garlic + chili gastrique), which were also expertly crispy and quite flavorful. Ulam/Mains: - Chance's Fried Chicken (unbreaded fried chicken, house pork gravy, atchara served with rice*), which was tangy and delicious. - Pork Sisig (gf, minced pork belly, peppers, onions, garlic, chili, citrus, fried egg served with rice)--some bites were perfect, some were a little fatty/tough, but overall tasty. Next time I'd try the Mushroom & Tofu Sisig for sure. Inihaw/Grilled: - Pork BBQ Ribs (gf, pork spare ribs, Filipino BBQ sauce, sesame, scallion), which were terrific, though hard to separate at the table. Sides: - Pancit Canton (stir fried egg noodles, lime, oyster, fish sauce, Chinese sausage, scallion, carrot, napa, snap pea), which was a bit unbalanced in flavor, so while I personally enjoyed it, others at our table decided to skip it. Sweets: - Pandan Cheesecake (Basque style pandan cheesecake, coconut, caramel, banana leaf), which seemed to be closer to a soufflé than a cheesecake. - Ube Sundae (purple yam ice cream, coconut caramel, puffed rice, banana spring roll), which was a pretty, lavender-colored ube soft serve. Tabachoy is finally open and it brings me such joy! If you've never tried Filipino food, you should definitely check this place out, I promise it's not intimidating. I've loved their food cart food since pop ups at Hale and True and random other spots, but it's so nice to be able to go eat their food any time (as long as you can get a reservation!) It's a small spot with a few counter seats and mostly 2 and 4 person tables. It's BYOB and there aren't really any drink options other than sparkling and bottled water so even if you don't drink alcohol it might be worth bringing your own mocktail. I love the idea of having a community beer fridge in case you forget your B! Hot tip- avoid the table by the door as it gets very cold when people are coming in and out! Now for the food! For 2 people we got the lumpiang- comes with 8 small rolls, pancit bihoon- pretty large for a small plate and really interesting flavor noodles, pork belly sissig- delicious and also a large portion for 2, and fried chicken- this wasn't what we were expecting but it was cooked perfect and delicious - looked more like a rotisserie chicken with gravy, not a typical fried chicken. We ended up taking most of this chicken home as it was too much food and we wanted room for dessert! The garlic rice was great too, recommend getting only that and skip the plain rice. They didn't have hot sauce (but they did bring out some very spicy Thai chilis upon request)! The pandan cheesecake was a great sweet ending- not too big and the flavor reminded me of kaya. The vibe is cozy, intimate, dimly lit, low key neighborhood BYOB that makes bangin, interesting food. The owner/chef is very sweet. They could have cleared some plates a bit faster but it was a busy night and they're just getting started. Everything was delicious and even though the menu is small there are so many other things on the menu I want to come back for (and lots of vegan options)! Wow, what a find! I've had overhyped Filipino food before, so I was prepared to be disappointed, but I was instead very pleasantly surprised! The food didn't miss, not a single dish. The app sampler was a great way to start--the wings were crisp outside, so juicy inside, and the dip it came with was tangy and oh so flavorful. The lumpia...well, my husband said they were the best he's ever had, so perfectly crisp without any real greasiness, and a satisfying flavor. The broccoli rabe, caesar salad, and green beans provided some much needed fiber lol. The pork adobo reminded me of my family's braised pork, so tender and flavorful, and same with the sizzling shrimp, which I could have eaten infinite platters of. The star, imo, was the pork sisig. What a mixture of textures and flavors all in one heavyweight dish! If you make it there, definitely order the sisig and shrimp. I'm salivating just writing this review and and thinking of them. And you'd better save room for dessert! The ube sundae is the stuff of dreams, especially with the fried banana. My husband loved the pandan cheesecake, which was fluffy and rich. Needless to say, we left stuffed. Be sure to go with a group and order as much as possible! It's a very small, cute space, so be sure to make a reservation. A group of us came to Tabachoy for dinner. It's a small space in South Philly, but super cute. If you have 6+ people, you'll automatically opt into the $50 tasting menu. It was more than enough food for us, and we got to sample almost everything on the menu. Food items included the fried chicken, congee, and multiple dishes of vegetables, which I appreciated. For mains, we got to try the short rib and the pork sisig. My favorite dishes were the salad, pumpkin soup, and short rib. The soup was super creamy and rich, and I loved the nuggets of roasted squash inside. The short rib was insanely buttery and fell off the bone. The salad's dressing had this savory sesame flavor that went really well with the cabbage. Also, there was plentiful garlic rice! Having read the NYT review of Tabachoy as one of the best 25 restaurants in Philly, we had to try it! We made a good call on taking an UBER instead of trying to find parking on the very narrow, crowded streets. Forgot til the last moment it is BYOB so oh well (and community refrigerator concept no longer in action because people took more than they gave, sad). For five people, we ordered the starter sample x2 (chicken wings, lumpia, caesar salad) with extra orders of chicken wings and lumpia, the chicken congee (small), butternut squash (small), short ribs (large), sizzling shrimp (large), pork sisig (large), two garlic rice and two jasmine rice. We ended up with some leftovers but otherwise polished off most of the items. The consensus on the top picks overall were: pork sisig (hands down winner, amazing, would go back just for that), garlic rice (so simple yet so delicious!), caesar salad (surprising win - it was sort of like coleslaw but so much better), butternut squash (super creamy, it would be hard to eat it all by yourself). Individual winning picks included the chicken congee (I do not prefer bonito flakes and found it a tad salty), lumpia (my friend's mom makes it better so not on my top list), and the short rib (it did fall off the bone but it was a little more fatty than I prefer and the eggplant that accompanied it was sort of mushy so the fatty meat and mushy eggplant made for a texture issue for me). The chicken wings were overwhelmingly large and unwieldly to eat so not a top pick for anyone although we did eat 7 of them so there's that fact. We all shared an ube sundae which covers the ube softserve, coconut caramel sauce, and the banana spring roll all in one. Delicious! One note: the bathroom is outside, down the alley, and in an unmarked white door off the street (at the side of the kitchen) - for health reasons folks cannot go through the kitchen in the back of the restaurant to get to the restroom. Absolutely loved our visit to Tabachoy. I will say at first I was surprised by the different type of food that was served--as it wasn't traditionally Filipino. Once the owner approached us I understood his stance on providing delicious takes on the Filipino cuisine. It really is a presentation of the flavors that the owner and chef planned out to work well together. I give so much respect to this place for bringing out the good flavors of the Filipino culture. Will always support this place and its intimate atmosphere. Truly resembles an Asian American representation in all aspects. read more

I've been hearing rave things about this place and I was able to snag a late reservation at 845 tonight. The place is very small and the wait times are mostly spent outside so keep that in mind. Unfortunately the server and manager got mixed up so our wait time was 20 minutes past the reservation. Not a huge deal and they were honest about the misunderstanding and apologized, however there were so many people waiting to be seated I could see this being a regular occurrence and many others were confused about how to check in/how they were going to be called and seated. Another thing to be aware of is that to access the bathroom you need to leave the restaurant through the front door and walk through the alley way. There is only one restroom and if the weather is cold or rainy it can be slippery. (Of course it was both tonight). The team works hard to keep reservations on time and they are so nice I really wanted to love this place. Before I get into why I'm leaving three stars I just wanted to take a minute and state how great the staff is and I hope the place continues to flourish. Unfortunately, the food was a miss for me. My friend and I ordered the shrimp, beef, park adobo & pork sigsig, the appetizer sampler, the Ube sundae and garlic rice as well as plain. My friend and I both agreed the food missed the mark for us and that we were disappointed. The salad was very citrusy to the point it was overpowering, the lumpia/spring roll didn't stand out. The fried chicken was nicely seasoned but 1/3 on the samplers wasn't a great start. The adobo and beef were a lackluster in flavor in our opinion whole the sig sig was once again overwhelmingly citrusy. The shrimp was seasoned well but nothing to write home about as well. We did enjoy the garlic rice & the ube sundae but as a whole we had been so excited that the food left us so disappointed. The staff is so kind and attentive I couldn't give them less than three stars but regarding their food I don't know if I'd be back unfortunately. Maybe it's just my taste buds ? Had reservations on the Thursday at 6:45 PM. After circling the block twice and finding a parking spot, we arrived to the restaurant on time. We didn't notice any close by lots. The place was packed, and they apologized that we had to have a little wait. This ended up perfect because it gave us time to walk a block to grab wine. By the time we came back, we were immediately seated. Place is cozy. Music playing. Crowded Thursday night so it was pretty loud with conversations. Our server was friendly. For apps we had the lumpias. My friend told me that it was very good but had better at my Mom's house. I loved that it came out hot and crispy! We also ordered the chicken wings which were decent sizes and had this delicious herb and soy dipping sauce. Everything is family style so we ordered 2 main dishes to share which came with rice. We ordered Pork ribs and pork adobo with garlic rice (other option was plain jasmine). My friend also loves the pancit my mom makes (bihon) so she wanted to try this canton version. All the food comes out as their ready so everything was nice and hot. Everything was seasoned perfectly. Neither of us has had soft serve Ube and decided to give it a try. It was basically vanilla with a subtle hint of Ube flavor. Servings are pretty big. We had plenty to eat and split the leftovers to take home. Would love to see their menu a bit. Not sure if they have bottled water, but their tap water didn't taste the best. It also wasn't very cold. We were fine with the bottle of wine we brought in. Great food. this is a filipino restaurant in south philly! me and my friend split the lumpia (pork spring rolls), pork sisig and south philly laing (broccoli rabe). thought the spring rolls were average nothing too special. pork sisig was flavorful and savory but a bit salty. the broccoli rabe was surprisingly good not too bitter! it helped balance out the oily meat dishes lol. for dessert we got the ube ice cream served with turon. honestly i liked this the best. not too sweet ! in terms of customer service i was a little put off by our waitress who rushed us out after we were there for about 1.5 hours. they didn't tell us there was a time limit which i wish they would've told us in the beginning. other than that if you're looking for a nice restaurant to eat filipino food this place is not too bad! i just haven't been to other filipino places in philly so i have nothing to compare this to haha. read more

The food was amazing. We started with the sampler and the chicken wings were so flavorful, the egg rolls were fried to perfection, and the caesar salad had the best mouth feel ever. Then for small plates we had the adobong green beans and for big plates we had the sisig, clams, and the bistek. Everything left us fully content and satisfied. The sisig could have used a little bit more chile peppers and a bit of acidity. But overall, 10/10 delicious meal and would come back again! The vibes were also good. Once 8pm hit, the music was bumpin with late 90s/2000s hip hop and R&B and the party in my mouth was elevated. The servers were also very nice. Very attentive and they had a good flow going. My only ask would be to have spoons at the table with the dining cutlery to eat like a true Filipino and get that perfect portion of rice to protein. read more

I'm sitting here deep in introspection as I write this review. If I were not Filipino, would I give my meal 5 stars? If I didn't know how great this restaurant could be would I be over the moon, dancing in the streets? Maybe it's unfair but I think of it as constructive! Which is a very Filipino way of thinking. I have followed the food truck around the city and its outlying neighborhoods for a couple years and loved their approachable introduction to Filipino flavors. I even loved hearing everyone mispronounce it. So I was excited to hear about the brick and mortar- and giddy when everyone said it was really good! I finally made a reservation with a group of Filipinos. We came on a cool weekday night. The interior is cozy and there was a bit of a wait from the tables taking longer to close out. There is not much room to stand inside so thankfully it was nice out that night while we waited to be seated. We quickly made our choices. The Caesar did not taste like a Caesar to me at all, it did not taste like anything Filipino to me either, but I LOVED IT. Creamy crunchy with a slight spice in the back of my throat. This is a damn good salad. The fried chicken was marketed as inspired by Max's (a popular chain). Again, did not quite remind me of Max's but stood out on its own for its juiciness and perfectly rendered skin. The gravy is ITTTT. Pour it all over everything. I did not understand the atchara pairing as it conflicted a bit with the gravy, and atchara usually goes with fattier dishes. The bbq ribs were huge!! And the taste was totally on point- this is as authentic a flavor as I've ever had for bbq made in the US. I ate the atchara with the ribs and that totally made sense, the vinegar cutting through the fattiness of the pork. Our group enjoyed each rib down to the bone. Lastly we ordered the pork sisig. The pork chunks are chopped larger than I'm used to, which gave it more of a bouncy texture overall vs sizzling crispy as it is traditionally. The flavors were also totally on point. Everything was eaten with plenty of garlic rice. Ask the server for spoons for the full Filipino eating experience. We sampled one of each dessert. The ube soft serve on its own was creamy but did not have a strong ube flavor. I always qualify my ube criticism with the fact that I haven't had 10/10 ube flavor in almost 25 years in the US. The sundae with the ube soft serve was more interesting with the crispy rice and turon. Turon is usually a lot sweeter than how it was presented here but I didn't mind it as it was paired with the soft serve. The pandan cheesecake was the table fave, with a luxurious light texture. However, the pandan flavor did not really come through for us. Cooking it in the banana leaf was a nice touch. The service was friendly and welcoming. The price and portions are super approachable- our group of four was uncomfortably (happily) full for around $30pp. If you are expecting Filipino food with a twist (a la their famous bistek cheesesteak), this will not do it for you. But we all agreed that the mains' flavors were totally on point and everything was cooked very well. This is a great representation of our cuisine in the city- I just want more more more!
