We serendipitously chanced upon this cute little cafe while waiting for a nearby lunch spot to open up. Being big independent coffee shop fans, we were looking forward to checking out some local spots. It was fairly crowded when we walked in, and we luckily snagged the second to last table available. It is not a very big place, with only about seven tables to accompany various group sizes. I ordered a genmaicha tea and my BF ordered an espresso. The barista pulled the most perfect espresso. The grind was just right, so it was neither burn/bitter nor watery or weak. There was a definite crema. My tea was brewed perfectly as well. The baristas here are very friendly and speak English. They also serve pastries, which look divine. I would definitely come back to Télescope anytime I'm in Paris. Very convenient to the Jardin du Palais Royal and the Musée du Louvre. read more

Down an unassuming alley and with no obvious signage, this petit hipster cafe is pretty easy to miss. But perhaps that is the intention, because the smug aloofness here does not exactly make Telescope the most welcoming place for the uncool to enjoy a cup of coffee. Ordered a Café Crème (4 euros) on this visit, which was expertly prepared. The bespectacled barista -- who speaks English, by the way -- took obvious care and much pride in his work. It looked absolutely perfect. However, I found the coffee a bit too sharp on the palate. It also had an exotic earthiness to it. It wasn't bad, per se; it just wasn't what I was used to. In the end, the flavor just wasn't my style. Good coffee is pretty hard to find in Paris. And even though I have no doubt that this is one of the better places, I just thought it was OK. read more

This is a very lovely café in rue Villedo, a little street where also another favorite of mine (Nest) is located. Surrounded by Asian style restaurants en sushi bars, Telescope is a welcome change for the other places in this hood. Here you can come, not for sushi or noodles, but for one of the best coffees in Paris. They serve an excellent cappuccino which is perfect to enjoy with a nice fresh croissant and a magazine. There are not incredibly many seats inside, it is just a small café, but you might be lucky to find a spot, since this is not the busiest street and only the hipsters know about this place ;) The staff does not really try to speak English to you, but since you will probably only order a coffee and not chat about work or something, I don't think the non-frenchies will think of this as a problem. read more

A hip, cool cafe in the center of Paris offering up flawless coffee by a barista who knows his skill. The service was wonderful - the friendly owner made me feel instantly welcome. Whilst he is a Parisian himself he was even joking that Paris would be the perfect city if it weren't for the Parisians! The granola was simply perfect, offering a custom blend of Emperor Norton sprinkled over a big dollop of yogurt and sweetened with a little jam and served in the cutest glass ramekin. The only downside if there would have to be one would be the small size of the cafe however in my view it only adds to the intimate, cozy experience. read more

I had bookmarked this location before I set off to Paris. I don't quite remember where I read about it, but I had heard that they serve up some of the best coffee in town, so I definitely had to check it out. I got a latte and banana bread, both of which were divine. The latte was super creamy and well-crafted, definitely the creamiest I've had thus far. Banana bread is good..nothing spectacular. Seating at the location is very small. I thiiink there is a downstairs but I'm not sure. this definitely seems like a spot the locals go to. The place is very close to the Grand Palais and it is a great place to have a coffee after a long stroll around the area. What a great find around Palais Royale! The owner is so kind and friendly. Additionally, the staff speaks English (it only took 5 seconds for the owner to take pity on my pathetic French). The pastries and the coffee are absolute perfection and accentuated by the warmth of the sun pouring through the open French windows. Definitely worth a second/multiple visits. read more

Pretentious and condescending staff, great coffee. Let me start by saying that this wasn't my first time at the café. I've been there before and it was a more than pleasant experience. In fact, it was one of the best cups of coffee I have ever had in Paris. However, today I received a level of customer service that was beyond any level of pretentiousness I have ever experienced or witnessed. I knew that the café didn't have wifi, as their aim is to create an ambiance that promotes conversation and creativity (or so I assume). I get that. I think it's a wonderful idea. But today I took out my laptop to work on a creative writing paper. Not two minutes later did one of the baristas approach me and say, "I'm sorry, but we have a 15 minute computer limit." I found this interesting, as I have never been to or have heard of a café with such a rule. I asked "Oh, that's interesting. Why?" out of curiosity, and she replied condescendingly "It's policy. We prefer if people draw or something here." Excuse me... what? I don't draw. I'm sorry that my creative writing paper isn't on actual paper and apparently isn't artistic or creative enough to merit its existence in your café. Aside from that, I understand, it's policy. If that's their policy, then so be it. But I think a better way to handle the situation would have been to say, "Just so you know for next time..." instead of basically telling me to stop using my computer after 15 minutes as if I were her poorly behaved child. Now there won't be a next time. They've lost my business. It's really a shame, as it's surprisingly difficult to find exceptional coffee in Paris. 2 stars for the delicious coffee. read more

My coffee fanaticism has lead me everywhere for that perfect cup of coffee, and being in France was no exception. The coffee culture is definitely different from the States (and I'm certain from other countries as well), with people ordering a cup post-meal or before hitting work at the various cafes and bistros dotted across the city. Definitely the functional, relaxing vibe, juxtaposed against the hipster, filtered shenanigans exploding across the States. During my time in Paris, I came to love Telescope, a tiny divot along a tiny street just north of the Palais Royal - Musee du Louvre Metro Line 1 stop. The numerous times I visited, I saw the same barista, who was really cool and helpful when it came down to ordering and asking about the beans they used. He was bilingual in French and English, and whenever I used my (American-accented) French, I was happy that he continued speaking to me in French, rather than mentally labeling me as 'tourist' as a few places dotted in the city tend to do. He uses an aeropress for the filtered coffee, at the time serving a Colombian roast and a Kenyan roast (same roastery), with a second roastery for the espresso beans. In total, I had a capp, and ordered a cup of the Kenyan. Everything was top notch! On one of the mornings, I also ordered a croissant avec confiture (with jam). So tasty! A fluffy croissant with fresh, not overly sweet jam. This plus the coffee was the perfect way to start the day prior to roaming around the city! read more

Adorable little coffeeshop in the 1st that serves first rate brews. I had the cafe filtre which took them about 5 minutes to make, so you know it is good! The coffee had no bitterness to it, and was elegantly served in a little glass pot along with a tiny glass cup. It was a bit pricey at 4,5 euros, but totally worth it after slogging through cup after cup of poor quality Parisian espresso. They also carbonate their own water here, which I have never seen before, but also speaks to the care taken to serve quality beverages. They serve some pastries, and I had their lemon meringue tart which was delicious. They seem to have some options for le petit-dej including a parfait made with granola and fromage blanc, sounds good! And I can't not mention the bathroom, featuring Aesop soap...my all-time favorite bath product manufacturer. It's all in the details people, and this place doesn't skimp! read more

Telescope reminds me of an indie coffee shop you'd find in London. Modern design, quality equipment, simple menu, beans and at-home coffee making things for sale. Maybe I should have tried a typical "Parisian" cafe for the experience but I'm glad I came here instead. The baristas were extremely friendly and kindly switched to English for me as I'm not confident enough to order coffee in French. They didn't have iced latte listed on the menu but they said they were able to make one for me. I can't remember the name of the roaster they use but I do remember it's a french roaster and the coffee was delicious!! Milk made it nice and creamy with subtle sweetness. That day was particularly hot and this was the perfect cool-down drink. I wish I had been in Paris long enough to come back here but it was a bit too far from my area. I definitely recommend it to anyone with a healthy obsession and appreciation for the craft that is coffee making. read more

Thank God for Telescope. Four months in to living in France, I hadn't a cappuccino. I wasn't up for paying 5 Euro for a crappy cup of coffee with milk, posing as a cappuccino. The moment I walked in the door, though, I new I was going to get something good. The first thing I always try at a new coffee shop is a cappuccino. I think it says a lot about the quality of the coffee, as well as the barista. Telescope delivers....great cappuccino. My husband got a pour-over, which was also very good. Telescope is everything you could want from a cafe--excellent space, friendly and knowledgable staff, great coffee selection. Situated in the first, it's the perfect respite from the over-commercialized shopping outlets less than a kilometer away. Tucked away on a side-street, bare brick and whitewashed walls welcomed us as we sat down on the raw wood with our drinks to console our aching feet. The barista even brought us samples of a pour over she was brewing because she heard us discussing the Ethiopian coffees we'd had the day before--very cool. Paris has been one of the last places to give in and embrace the third wave of coffee and Telescope are among the best places in Paris for coffee. There is intense focus going into the coffees being prepared and the pour-overs are really top notch and the espresso based beverages are also very good. The selection of beans rotate frequently and doesn't only feature French roasters so always a good place to often stop by as there's often something new. This coupled with tasty pastries and a nice atmosphere makes it a prime spot for me whenever in Paris. I do still rank them as the best in Paris despite the competition getting tougher every single year. For someone like me with basically no knowledge of French whatsoever it also helps greatly that most of the staff are able and willing to speak English as well. read more

During my recent trip to Paris, I had the opportunity to check out this hidden gem. Once entering this small location, we soon realized that there was only a couple tables. It was not very big at all, and the bar took up most of the footage. When we got up to order, luckily the guy spoke english which we were very happy about.
