We've been going to Szechuan Express for years and it's always tasty and well made, whether you do dine-in or takeout. The owners/servers are always so friendly and make sure you are happy with your meal (when dining in) and package up your food extra well (when picking up to-go orders). Ambiance-wise, it's pretty classic - with a fish tank, green carpet that matches the green chairs, and really cool art on the walls that works with the vibe of the fish tank. Our go-to dishes are Peanut Butter Chicken and Sweet and Sour Chicken. The chicken is always high quality, not stringy or chewy like some chicken dishes can be, especially in takeout meals. I am a huge fan of sauce in general, so anything I order at any establishment has to have some kind of sauce on it - and Szechuan is great about this. Everything is always very saucy, but not to the point that it makes any of the breaded items soggy. They must use a batter that works perfectly with their sauces, making it both not too gloopy and not too crispy! Their soups are also great, and I do the trick of asking for a mixture of the Egg Drop Soup and Hot and Sour Soup, making it a good mix of eggy and spicy. Aside from the soup mixture, another thing I will note - make sure to ask for fried rice if you want that, otherwise the standard rice if you don't specify will be steamed vs. fried. Lastly, we always get the Peanut Butter Cookies as a little treat at the end of the meal. They taste sort of like the delicious burned edges of a sugar cookie. Yum! In a time when it's become harder and harder to find a sit down/dine in Chinese restaurant, we came across the Szechuan Express. This location offers takeout as well, and was doing a brisk business. Conveniently located at Omaha's crossroads of Dodge and S 114th St., the Szechuan Express is a hidden gem. Not very fancy, but clean and great service, and more importantly, outstanding food makes this a place to stop. We enjoyed some of their soups, along with peanut butter chicken, Mongolian beef, and one of the most outstanding versions of moo shu pork we have ever tried. (At 6:30 on a Friday) The food is very hot and fresh, my fiancé burnt his mouth on the first bite with how hot it was We ordered the Orange Beef, Chicken with Garlic, and the Sesame Chicken. All entrees came with a choice of fried rice or steamed, we got both and they are both really well cooked. Orange beef was so flavorful, I typically don't like orange beef/chicken but this one is very good! The garlic chicken was also very good, all entrees came with plenty of sauce. Not dry at all! The sesame chicken surprised me. I get sesame chicken pretty much every time I order Chinese food, this one wasn't your typical sticky orange sauce. Some days it's filled and other days it's like the put barely a dollop in the middle. The chicken friend rice has always been good and my kids favorite meal. 4 kids with big appetites and 2 big orders usually does the trick. I love the hot and sour soup. It's spicier than most other places and that's what I like. So when I'm craving hot and sour soup I'll call and order it. I've had plenty of plates here but the last one I had was the Szechuan Chicken. I was pretty disappointed. There was barely any chicken and was mostly vegetables. I ordered $47 worth of takeout last night. The takeout included six pieces of crab Rangoon. I don't think I've ever had anything worse from a takeout restaurant! Went for lunch, this place is a rare spot on 114th and Dodge that doesn't fill up at noon. 2 coworkers and I each ordered lunch special which we were told came with 2 crab rangoons. We assumed that meant 2 per person. Guess not! We received 2 total. We were offered no choice of drinks beside water, which is fine, I guess. I wish I could give less than one star, when we arrived we waited for 10 minutes until someone came to seat us and take our order. We ordered three single plates, our food was brought out within two minutes of ordering which is the biggest giveaway that the food is not freshly cooked to order. The rice was old hard, cold , stale and extremely dry which was in no way shape or form actually fried rice that you would expect from an authentic Chinese food restaurant. We ordered Mongolian beef which tasted like beef and broccoli minus the broccoli. Cashew chicken was actually just off cut pieces of chicken and mushroom with uncooked cashews thrown in before serving. The sweet and sour pork was inedible, hard and the sauce tasted off and mouldy. We invited the owner over to our table to express our concerns only to be met with attitude and disgust. We asked the owner to have a few bites of his own food which he did and said it's fine and always served that way. He offered no customer service for his low quality food , he didn't even bother offering to remake or replace the fold , he simply said we ordered and we must pay. Aside from the trash sold , the portions are horrible .....if your not a local don't bother eating here as I've seen he ignored us completely In favour of a group of locals that arrived 10 minutes after us. This is not Chinese restaurant standards. Very dissatisfied and disappointed as this restaurant had good reviews and our experience turned out horrible. $$ down the drain. This place has amazing Chinese food and even better service. I go here as much as I can for lunch at work. The owners are a lovely couple who remember your orders from the last stop and charge outrageously low prices for their food. My fiance and I can both eat here for 18 dollars after leaving a generous tip. If I could give 6 stars I would. The food itself is incredible. I have had their beef fried rice, generals chicken, peanut butter chicken, and Mongolian beef, and I love it all.
