They showed compassion, they took care of me, they didn't judge me and most importantly they didn't treat me how I felt "an alcoholic ". I thank the staff and doctors for bringing me back to life!!! I have been talked to badly and called a liar to my face by two of your employees.  Let me explain: Thursday my 14 year old son arrived at Saint Joseph via ambulance, Mental Health on California St. transported him there for a 72 hour hold due to onset hereditary schizophrenia. All was well until Friday night, I had to leave and get my 1 year old and 8 year old from daycare. A nurse said I could not leave and if I did she would call CPS and the police because I would be abandoning my 14 year old son. I agreed to come back and I did. I had my 1 year old and 8 year old with me. At one point my 1 year old daughter ran from the area my son was being kept and the same nurse that threatened me with CPS and the police started to question me about finding someone to watch my children. She said that I needed to do something with my children. I explained to her that I am from Louisiana and I have no family out here. I told her I have a 20 year old son. My son doesn't live with me and he doesn't know how to care for a 1 year old child. She goes on to say that I should get on my knees and beg my son to watch my younger children. I looked at her and said: I don't beg nobody and I left. What she said to me was totally unprofessional and disrespectful.  Saturday morning I called and checked on my son. I let the nurse Maggie know I was coming to the hospital at 1pm after I dropped my 2 younger children off at daycare. I was there at 1pm. Around 5pm I went outside and smoked a 2 cigarettes,  I returned about 25 minutes later. Around 8pm I decided to smoke another cigarette.  I would let my son stay on my laptop for another hour and leave. As I was leaving out I told the nurse that was sitting outside the area my son was being kept that I was going to smoke a cigarette.  She jumped up and said: No you said that last night and didn't come back. I responded: I was told I had to leave because my daughter was running around. I waited while the charge nurse came. I explained to him that I had been up there since 1pm and that my children was at daycare. I explained to him that I have no family here and that I am from Louisiana.  He said: Now you are lieing. I became furious and yes I begin to yell.  I yelled: Would you talk to a white woman like that? It was a yes or no question and he didn't say yes or no. I called him a racist,  because that's how i was feeling and I still feel that way. Yes, I feel like if i was a white woman he would have not called me a liar to my face.  He said that i was abandoning my son and that he was calling CPS and the police.  I told him that I was not abandoning my son and that my son was there receiving care that he have the right to receive and that i was not breaking law. He was very rude and hostile toward me. The nurse that called him there she jumped into the confrontation and I yelled at her. I told him I couldn't leave my 1 year old and 8 year old at daycare. Let me remind you all this is going on in front of my 14 year old son who is already battling schizophrenia.  That charge nurse made me choose between staying there at the hospital with my 14 year old son and picking my babies up from daycare....I could not leave my children at daycare all night. With a heavy heart, I gathered my things and left.  He made it very clear that he was calling CPS and that the police would be at my house.  If you have any doubt about the events that took place, please play your cameras back.....I am sure there is a camera to refer to; after all,  it is a psych holding area.  Disrespect, Unprofessional Behavior/ Comments, Racism ...... I don't believe that's the foundation Saint Joseph's Hospital was built on. I can be reached at this email or (number deleted).  Thank you, Mandy Williams, CST

Nurse Arnold had a great sense of humor and genuinely tried to soften the blow of a long wait. Dr. Lavelle and the rest of the medical team kept me informed as test results came in, which I appreciated. That said, the quality of care after the decision to admit was extremely disappointing. Being left on a hard, outdated gurney for over 10 hours while waiting for a bed is unacceptable. I have worked in hospitals across the Southeast, the Midwest, and now California, and this was by far the worst experience I've had in this regard. What made it worse was the lack of communication. Hospitals use admissions boards and can provide at least an estimated wait time, yet no one offered updates or acknowledged the delay. Being left in the dark for hours isn't just frustrating--it feels dismissive and rude. Now let's talk about Area 3N (CDU). First, kudos to the staff who work there under these conditions. Dani and the noc shift, as well as Tigen and the day shift, were outstanding--professional, compassionate, and genuinely comforting to patients. They deserve recognition for doing the best they can in a very challenging environment. The EGD Team was also excellent. The music in the procedure room was a thoughtful touch--before the first beat of classic rock finished, I was already out. Unfortunately, the cleanliness of this unit is appalling. I checked in at 7:00 p.m., and the first time I saw housekeeping was 2:30 p.m. the following day. Patients are placed in a large shared space, with more than 10 people sharing a single bathroom that was not kept clean overnight. However, serious HIPAA violations occurred in Area 3N. Patients are housed in a large, open shared space with thin partitions. Throughout the night and following day, I could clearly hear full patient names, diagnoses, test results, treatment plans, and physician-patient conversations from surrounding cubicles. Doctors conducted bedside discussions containing protected health information in full earshot of other patients and visitors. I'm tired of hearing "short staffing" used as an explanation. Patients deserve dignity, communication, privacy, basic cleanliness, and a safe environment. The frontline staff are doing their best, but the system fails patients once admission is decided. This is not the level of care the public should be expected to accept.
