Great food, great drinks. Pisco sour was great, Shirley temple was unfortunately the best Shirley temple I've ever had somehow. We got the market salad, cornbread, slow cooked short rib, and seasonal antipasto. The seasonal antipasto was delicious, we're still dreaming about it weeks later. My picky husband actually enjoyed the foie gras, I actually enjoyed the olives (they were not bitter, creamy somehow) The cornbread was a little dry, and the salad was nice and tart. There were some solid salads and veggie-heavy dishes in the menu, which was a welcome change from the heavy food we'd been eating during our time in NOLA. Service was also strong. The only minor blip was a couple friends' meals (salad!) arrived significantly after other meals. We sat indoors; I'd love to come back and experience the outdoor patio. read more

I don't like to complain or better yet, I don't like writing negative reviews but Sylvain, you've let me down two years in a row. I totally understand that over the years Sylvain has gotten more and more popular but my last visit was a repeat of the year before (I did not post or write about last time), but here's my issue: I called to get a reservation but I was put on hold and no one came back but I figured they get busy prepping and dealing with customers that are there so I figured I'll be in that area later that day so I'll just stop in. I stopped by but instead of trying to get a reservation I tried to get a table for early dinner, the hostess was adamant that a table was not possible. Even though there were a bunch of empty seats inside and outside, I understood that they probably have reservations already booked. My disappointment was NOT the fact that dining was not possible right now but the her attitude was really unwelcoming. I asked about getting a reservation for any evening during the nights we were still in town. She just made us feel like we were pests and wanted us to be shooed away. At this point, I was kind of like, do we really want to dine here anymore; there are tons of dining options in New Orleans. read more

This is a sexy secret spot in the French quarter. Dripping with a moody entrance from the street this place would be my goto for French quarter Date Night done right. Everything was delicious. The staff are amazing and super attentive without being annoying. The courtyard is super cute. If you have noise sensitivity it might be a bit loud for you. Amazing ambiance. This place is right in the center of the city but feels miles away once you walk back into the courtyard, while still staying lively. On top of that, the food is really really good. Top notch food and outstanding service!!! The patio is a beautiful escape from the busy French Quarter. Our server, Mack, kept us laughing in between flavorful, boozy drinks and incredible small bites. "Mack like the truck" recommended the crawfish and dumplings appetizer and it legitimately changed my life--so much that we ordered a second portion!! The zucchini fries and cornbread were delicious and quickly devoured. They are a popular spot so a reservation will definitely be made in the future, but despite the hustle and bustle, Mack made us feel like the only table in the place--even going out of her way to bring over a tide pen for me after spilling a bit of wine! No time for pictures! Sylvain was such an amazing food experience. First off, they can make the hell out of an old fashion. Super well balanced. I ordered the Cast Iron Cornbread as an appetizer/dessert. It was perfect. I then had the short rib and it shortly before and my favorite short rib meal. It's worth the walk through the narrow alley to get to this gem. Recommended to us by the bartender at Five's, this spot checked all the boxes for us. We sat at the bar because we didn't have a reservation. We had excellent service. The cocktails were outstanding including the "just erotic, not kinky." The shrimp etouffee with fried green tomatoes was delicious. Even though I'm not vegetarian I ordered the mushrooms with grits with a bordelaise sauce which really awed me. The right amount to of creole spice and blend of fried chicken with tenderness of tomato made this a pleasant and fulfilling lunch. If I could do zero stars I would. LEOs beware of this place. A friend and I entered to enjoy brunch and drinks. My friend was wearing a thin blue line hat. I didn't notice anything at first but my friend said the hostess was looking at her in a mean way. I thought surely she was imagining it so we sat at the table she directed us to. The hostess then threw the menu at my friend and placed mine nicely. Again, I thought it was just dropped and my friend was overthinking it. Until, she brought a water bottle and filled my glass to the top and gave my friend a splash before shoving the glass at my friend and slamming the bottle down. At that point I refused to let anyone act that way or eat food from an establishment that disrespects LEOs. When the waitress asked what we wanted I told her the check for the water. She knew immediately what happened (she didn't say a word but her face showed it) and said we owed nothing and thanked us. read more

The French Quarter, New Orleans' oldest neighborhood (and home to Sylvain), is an experience. We ambled by at a slower pace to take in all the beautiful buildings and balconies. And it seemed like there was live music around every corner as we made our way down the bustling streets in the late afternoon to make our early dinner reservation. Sylvain, unfortunately, was not an experience as the walk over to the restaurant was far more memorable. If your time in NOLA is limited, I'd find other places to eat in the Quarter. First impression: Our server was fairly hands off and felt like she didn't want to be there -- I guess I don't blame her as we were the only table in the restaurant at the time. The other reviews seem to indicate that service is hit or miss here. We put in an order of cornbread, cabbage salad, and drinks to get started with, all of which stole the show. You can't go wrong with cornbread, especially in New Orleans. Syvain's take on it comes in a skillet with delectable cane syrup butter. I got the pappardelle bolognese, which was nothing to write home about. On second thought, I think our server redeemed herself when she asked us if we wanted to order a second round of drinks for the road. The Army & Navy (gin, lemon, orgeat, angostura bitters) hit the spot as we meandered our way through the Quarter again after dinner. read more

A bit noisy but very patriotic! There was a group here celebrating a 40th birthday. Once they and others left, much quieter. Had the fried Green Tomato BLT! You can't see the fried green tomato in my pix but it was delicious along with real bacon and perfectly fried egg with runny yolk. The fries were freshly made and perfectly seasoned (maybe a bit salty for some) and the Happy Hour Sazeracs were perfect and nicely priced. Will was a perfect server and catered to our every request! A perfect French Quarter foodie experience. The outside courtyard is beautiful but with 96 degrees and 96% humidity, we opted for inside! An updated review from my most recent experience at Sylvain! I finally tried their brunch and I just say, I was a little disappointed. Living in New Orleans, it's hard to go out and find healthier alternatives since so much of our food is so rich or fried. I like to indulge, but I also like something light sometimes. Instead of getting my usual order of their chicken sandwich (which is great BTW), I ordered the avocado toast. Yes, there was avocado on the toast but it tasted exactly like the store bought wholly guacamole. I was disappointed not to get fresh avocado for $16. I understand sometimes things happen in the kitchen, but guacamole is a lot different than plain avocado. Other than that, it was an enjoyable experience sitting on the patio before it was too hot! read more

Very disappointed with the food here. The menu at this restaurant is very small with only 6 entrees to choose from. The ambiance for dinner is date night with low lighting and candles. The service was good, no complaints. My husband and I went for dinner and started off with the market salad which was very underdressed and we had to ask for more dressing. For entrees I ordered the chicken sandwich and my husband got the burger. The chicken sandwich had no seasoning and for some reason they used a chicken thigh instead of chicken breast which gave it a weird fatty texture. I didn't like it at all and didn't finish it. The fries however were perfectly seasoned and fried and came with a delicious aioli dipping sauce. For dessert we ordered the Nutella chocolate tart which was also disappointing. The only thing that had Nutella on the dessert was a whipped cream on top that needed more sweetness and you could barely taste the Nutella. The tart itself was hard and bitter from all the dark chocolate used. The menu didn't mention the tart being dark chocolate. Had it mentioned it we wouldn't have ordered it as neither of us like dark chocolate. We wouldn't go back unfortunately. read more

Such a hidden gem! We were roaming the streets trying to find a nice restaurant for dinner and stumbled upon Sylvian. We didn't have a reservation, but we're still able to get a table in the patio after ~5min wait. They also have indoor seating with a bar, the patio was actually quite a lovely surprise! Very cute lights and plants decor! We had a few cocktails before our food came out. Food was fresh, vibrant, light and flavorful. Sylvian is probably our top restaurant in the neighborhood/area!! I ordered a Moscow mule and the drink the waitress made just looked like a drink you'd get at the club, it did not taste good. I came here the other day for dinner with some friends and we had such an amazing time! The staff and service were absolutely incredible. Everyone was so attentive and they went out of their way to make sure that we were taken care of. The drinks were phenomenal! I tried the Genever's Body. It was a great mix of Gin, Pear, Orgeat, Ginger, Citrus. What a complex drink! Perfect for a cold winter's day. I had the grilled octopus which was simply out of this world. They served it with a mole sauce so incredible I just wanted to take a bath in it. The grilled carrots were such a perfect accompaniment to it too!
