We don't always have the chance to venture out west, and we were glad we did. Enter into the RSL, this large new space has a range of different areas to make yourselves comfortable, booths, dining tables, bar tables and casual areas, to lounge about, this certainly is a great space to mingle and enjoy a few drinks. The styling is on trend, marble, copper and dull pink and green tones. There are also DK booths set up making the venue an ideal night spot to get your part on. If you are after a bite to eat there are some great options including Italian, with some decent pizzas on offer. If you are a burger fiend, the proven burgers from Chur Burger are also on offer. Great to line the stomach before or after a few bevvies. The bar is certainly well decked out. A range of cocktails that are not only delicious, but beautiful, some even a visual masterpiece with dry ice! We had a few Espresso Martini's to kick off the evening as well as a Dragonfruit and Strawberry sour (this was a mocktail as sadly one of us drove). If you're here for a party, why not order a Jug of red or white sangria, spiced tea or champagne cocktails, certainly a great sharing option. Bar tenders can also make classic cockails upon request. The busy venue was efficient making these, despite the busy venue, so that is certainly impressive. If cocktail aren't your think, they have a good range of wines, spirits, and an even better range of Whiskeys. With some great single malts including Macallan with age statements, Glenfiddich 18yr, Balvenie 21 year just to name a few, some nice Japanese options including Hibiki and Yamazaki and the to name a few they also have a decent range of American whisky. The pricing is reasonable too. A great venue for a social visit or to party. There is also the option to stay at the Novotel on sight if you decide to make a night of it.

When a born & bred 'westie'' refers to their local, they don't mean some trendy gentrified pub that…read moreserves gastronomical delights and pints of exotic cider to the tunes of hip local musicians but rather a uniquely Australian phenomenon - the local RSL (or leagues) club and in this, the first, edition of "Kylie's Does Club*" *title of series subject to change, we visit the Western Sydney wonder that is "St Mary's RSL". Let's set the scene; it's a Friday night (Easter Friday to be exact), smack bang in the working (or non-working) class heartland. Its a long weekend, Jesus is dead and there's cause to celebrate (cause we know he'll be back again on Monday right?!), what better way to celebrate than with Friday night karaoke and not just any karaoke, but live band karaoke. Not even the MSG from the dinner I ate at the in house Chinese restaurant could keep me down. The wine is cheap, the beer is flowing and the song list extensive. The locals are dolled up in their Friday night best and the smoking area reeks of winfields, aftershave and cheap perfume...ah the scent of the west!!! Karaoke is serious business at St Mary's RSL and they don't take kindly to those who mock their art form. I have a feeling that a lot of failed singers numb their pain on the stage and dance floor between the poker machines and coffee shop. However, once the white wine kicks in I've put my name on the list and before I know it my friend and I are performing the grease mega mix to a full dance floor of adoring fans. It seems we have appeased the locals and will be welcomed back, and we will be back. I can't really speak for the rest of the club, and I wouldn't really write home about the food at the Chinese restaurant but I can say Friday night live band karaoke at st Mary's RSL earned all three stars I've given it and if you're ever this far west on a Friday night, it's not to be missed!!!!

Sunday lunches are extremely busy because of the seafood specials, so if you're not a seafood fan, DON'T go on Sundays - it costs more money and has long lines. So when told about it I was amazed and thought "there's a what?....where?" First impressions were wonderful. You step into a light airy modern space that's calm and serene. There's modern art on the walls, fresh flower arrangements and a fabulous view. Staff seem friendly and efficient. It's quite ritzy. We chose the tasting plate menu with matching wines. When we started with just one scallop I was a little worried but I needn't have been. It was beautifully cooked with a white sauce. I won't go through every dish because that would be boring. My only complaint is that the duck tortellini was just a tad too al dente and they didn't provide a spoon to scoop up that lovely broth! A small complaint. The duck itself was delicious and everything on the menu was spectacular. However, the staff let me down a little. I'm not a wine buff or snob (I don't think) but I'm curious and I like to learn. So when the waiter tells us he's pairing the riesling with the duck I asked where the wine was from. He had to go and ask the bartender (I pictured a conversation - "Shit! they want to know where the wine's from - I can't tell them 'Chateau Tanunda cask' what'll I say what'll I say?") (joke). There were 4 different wines and the waiter knew nothing about any of them & each time he had to go back and ask the bartender. Surely that's basic waitering 101! Particularly where the wines were part of the selling point of the menu. Apart from that I loved loved this restaurant! It was so lovely watching the sun set over the mountains and all the lights come on. It was a Saturday night and there should have been more people there. It is a special occasion place and the prices were high compared to the buffet in the club below, but they were not outrageous and it was worth it. I'm making inquiries about taking the family there for Christmas (specifying we must be seated in the revolving part) :).
