Most of the shop is pink inside and out, and the entire one side of the store is covered in sweets jars. Literally every type of candy that you can imagine is sold here, cola cubes, fizzy sticks, gummy bears, flying saucers, dolly mixtures...The lot. But what's greatest of all, is the price. For 100g, you only have to spend 75p!! At most other sweets shops, you're looking at doubling that cost for the same amount. I was completely shocked when I saw the price tag and had to check twice! As well as the traditional sweets jars, the shop also sells gift wrapped selections of sweets that are tied together with a ribbon and bow. These cost between £6 and £9 depending on the size of the parcel and the amount of sweets included. The thoughtful aesthetics and creative design of the gift wraps are absolutely perfect to give people as a unique present. Additional to gift wraps, they sell mugs full of sweets, which also look great as birthday gifts. The staff certainly know how to keep their store looking brand spanking new too, considering it has been open since December 2011. And their ditzy humour and light hearted approach really makes the whole sweet shopping experience an enjoyable and memorable one!

If you've a sweet tooth it's worth popping in as behind the counter they have a huge selection of traditional sweets such as dolly mixtures, pineapple cubes and sherbert lemons which are pretty cheaply priced as you can get 100g of sweets for 75p! What makes them stand out from other local sweet shops is that you can buy larger amounts in gift wrapped parcels or served in mugs or hampers. If you've got a wedding or a birthday party coming up you can even hire a sweet cart from here for the occasion the price varies depending on how many sweets you want and if you're also hiring glassware to serve them in. Ithink the minimum price was around £100.

It's just a shame that independent places like this are few and far between nowadays. The windows and shelves inside Knowle's Traditional Sweet shop are cluttered to every inch with jars, bars, tins and packets of sugary treats, enthralling all who enter to explore the wide, unusual selection. I usually end up spending half an hour inside here at the least, searching for different products to try. I'm a big liquorice addict, and Knowle's stock a great boiled sweet version called Army & Navy, which has a great smooth flavour. There's also a large variety of chewy liquorice that's equally as tasty. Most jars of sweets cost £1.50 per 100g, which isn't too bad price-wise for the amount you receive in a paper bag. Additionally, the shop services are very welcoming, and staff aren't pushy in hurrying you to buy something. They will quite happily allow you to mooch around at their sweets for as long as you need.

They have all the usual goodies a traditional sweet shop should have and I was immediately lured to the Love Hearts and Parma Violets, which at 40p each I thought was a great price. I also grabbed a traditional Barrett's Sherbet Fountain - sadly now in plastic tubes but hey I guess you can't slow down development. I was also enticed by a bag of flying saucers and a Caramac. The shop has a large selection of sweets to buy by weight but also sadly they now come in grams and not ounces. I am really after some traditional marshmallows (you know the kind that are a bit harder on the outside - help me anyone) but alas that quest continues and has been going for a while. However, I did treat myself to some white mice. It is a real shame that all the jars are plastic and not glass but I think I've got some pretty rigid ideas, formed many moons ago, on what the magical elements of a sweet shop should be. However, this shop measured up quite well and their prices are not expensive.

Intrigued as I am by anything oriental I decided to go in and buy some 'snacks'. Now if you, like me, have a bit of an obsession with all things Asian then you will have probably tried some pretty weird stuff like Wagashi sweets and bean curd buns. Nothing, however, could have prepared me for the sensation overload that is 'Homemade Mocha'. Trust me; you want to steer clear of these freaky little snacks. Falling somewhere, aesthetically, between a willy and a dumpling, these dusty, odd little sausages will make you think you are eating something very raw and very wrong. They come in flavours such as 'Red Bean' and 'Green Tea' and are clearly not worth the £2 you will pay out of curiosity. I ate my whole pack anyway so that I got my money's worth. I'll probably be dead by morning or at least have a few tentacles. Other delights to be found in this store are Hello Panda biscuits (amazing!), noodle snacks, wasabi peas and 'Ball Cakes'. Hello Kitty fans will be in for a surprise when they chow down on those BBQ flavoured seaweed crisps. YUMZ!

The tiny shop somehow manages to stock masses of unusual food, from Japanese sweets to herbal flavoured jellies to noodles to biscuits. The fridge inside is also packed with healthy cold drinks and ice teas. I mainly go here to purchase herbal teas, particularly goji berry infusion. Although this specific tea is little pricey, the taste alone is well worth the expense. I'd describe Anytime Snacks as a condensed, cuter version of Sing Fat Ltd. Although saying this, I often find more products here that tempt my taste. Additionally, staff are very friendly and always talk to you and smile when you are inside the store. Whereas at Sing Fat, the staff rarely acknowledge that you are there. Anytime Snacks is well worth a visit if you like bright colours, little oddities, sweets or want to explore food that you've never tried before.

Its always nice to have a treat and this stall has plenty with a few not seen before yummies too. Whilst Birmingham has done so much for English chocolate already, it's hard not to feel like rationing is still on when you look at all the exotic and gawdy wrappings and packaging from the American brands. Our British sweeties feel a bit bland in comparison. As Yankees is also essentially a little cart, the shop further taps into a neat sense of by-gone Americana. It feels like a tornado has picked this place up from the Magic Kingdom and dropped it here. I fully expect to hear a barbershop quartet start up as I nibble, suck and chew. Just a reminder that Yankees also does American crisps and pop - just in case you want to give your sweet tooth a day off. So, all in all, this is the place that makes us jealous of America consumerism again, I wouldn't be surprised if they also stock the nylons and tobacco I can't find.

Some old-style sweet shops tend to feel rather fake and forced, but the historical setting of Mr Chill's and the authentic interior make it all seem real. Admittedly (again), I don't go to Kings Heath very often - but I'm going to make a point to pop in here next time I'm around. So, background... I had shimmied on down to Kings Heath last week to meet the lovely Ben C for lunch and a catch up. Once our delightful meeting was over (see review Veg Out http://www.yelp.co.uk/biz/veg-out-cafe-birmingham), I had to grab some bits for my goodie bags for my Elite event the following week. Now, because I spoil my Elites rotten - I like to get them a little something that's not too expensive but is related to the event I am putting on for them to enjoy. I was totally stuck on what to get to go with a "beer and food pairing" event until I popped into "I Had One Of Those" (as recommended to me by Ben). Between rows and rows of sweetie jars and a huge choice of small and novelty gifts, you won't walk out of here empty handed. There are bits to match every budget with "party bag" style toys starting at 25p and great novelty Money boxes reaching around £10 - £15. They also had branded Marvel gear, some Thundercats things and loads of nostalgic memorabilia to delight even the most bah humbug of types. The staff were super helpful once I explained what I was looking for. After settling on some "pint pots" (sweeties in the shape of pints of beer), my measurement was weighed out and I was given some lovely paper bags to present the sweets in (to add to the retro charm). I have promised them I'll pop back in next time I'm in the area. If you're looking for a main gift, things for a party bag or just a token present - I can certainly recommend a visit to the treasure trove that is "I Had One Of Those".
