I took my Toshiba laptop to Sweethaven because it would boot up to windows but then freeze and nothing I tried would make it work.
After having the laptop for a week they phoned me to tell me that they had detected some viruses which they had removed, and that my optical drive was broken, which surprised me because it was virtually new, having been replaced a year ago and hardly used. Then they told me that one of the screws holding the optical drive was broken - which I thought was odd because there is only 1 screw holding it in place and it is definitely not broken. They also told me that the screen needed a new backlight, that they were having to use a remote screen because the one on my laptop was so dark, and that the fan on the heatsink was not working and needed replacing.
After alledgedly attempting the above repairs, they phoned to tell me that there was so much wrong with my laptop that it was beyond economical repair and that I should consider buying a new one. I would get the deposit that I paid back if I bought a new one from them.
I asked them to reassemble my laptop, but to leave the hard-disk out so that I could retrieve the data.
When I took the apparently dead laptop home I thought I might just have one more go at trying to get it to work myself and reinstalled the hard disk. However, when I tried to start it nothing happened so I decided to have a look inside myself.
I discovered that some of the cables had not been reconnected, several screws were missing, or were not able to be removed because where they were screwed in was damaged. Also the SD card holder and the wireless mouse USB were missing.
This is shoddy and lazy. I asked for my laptop to be given back to me reassembled, but they only did half a job and have not restored it to the physical condition in which I gave it to them.
Once I had reattached the cables and reinstalled the hard drive it worked just fine - albeit that they must have done a factory reset because all my data and personalisation has gone. The screen is as bright as ever, the optical drive works and the fan on the heatsink is spinning away happily.
This implies that there is nothing wrong with the laptop other than the virus which they told me they had found and deleted. All it needed was a factory reset, which I could have done myself, but was hoping to avoid, which is why I took it to an "expert" in the first place.
My opinion is that they gave me back my laptop in a non-working condition to try to convince me that I needed to buy a new one - hopefully from them!
In my opinion they suffer from the arrogance typical in the computer industry that if your machine is over a couple of years old its not worth taking the trouble of fixing!
This machine (the dead one that I am using to type this message on) cost me over £800 when I bought it and I am not about to abandon it just because it is "old".
Do not take your machine to these people unless you are in the market for a replacement, or have bought it from them in the first place. read more
