We happened upon Sweet Grass while out and about looking at vintage and junk stores one weekend. There's no large signage out the front. No fanfare or tell tale signs of what's behind the gates, so it would be really easy to miss this place if you weren't looking for it or feeling adventurous as we were.
On walking through the big gates at the front you will be greeted with a sea of bonsai trees. Gorgeous creations in all kinds of sizes, and obviously cared for by a passionate gardener. It was especially beautiful to see the deciduous bonsais loosing their orange and red leaves that gathered at the bottom of the miniature trunks like a blanket. Many of the bonsais had small ornaments and statues in the bottom, that helped to depict a certain scene. Ceramic buffalos walking down a "hill", a man fishing and other whimsical creatures that elevated these bonsai from just "mini trees" to art works. I was so impressed.
You can sit here and drink tea and coffee, and it was nice to see some young people doing so, but we had places to be and cut our visit short. I'm not certain if you can even buy the bonsai here (I didn't see price tags) but it is a magical place to visit in what is otherwise a pretty non-descript area of town, and if you have the time to wander through the gardens and sip on some tea then I'd highly recommend a visit to see something just a little bit out of the ordinary. read more
