Washington and Lee University is a historic campus, and it's worth a visit if you're into southern history. Washington and Lee was founded in 1749 and named after George Washington and Robert E. Lee. At this liberal arts school, you'll want to check out the University Chapel & Museum, where you'll see the 500 seat chapel, the Lee family mausoleum, and Lee's office when he was president of the university from 1865 to 1870. Also check out the Reeves Museum of Ceramics, which houses the 4th largest collection of ceramics in the U.S. I love walking around university campuses when I'm in a new area, and I'm glad I explored this one.

I spent a summer here at a program during high school 20 years ago and absolutely loved it. It's small and cozy and home-y and the small town of Lexington has plenty of shops and restaurants within a 5 minute walk of the school. Visiting this summer I easily found my way around like old times, after 20 years not much has changed. It's still beautiful, I saw a few updates, but essentially felt like I had stepped back in time.

Do not get me started on the dining experience here at Randolph College. In the past three years alone the quality and variety of the food has dropped tremendously. Students get excited when the food is fully cooked or not rotting in its place; at best the food is unappetizing and at worst it has sent students to the hospital. To alleviate the pressure on Skeller (the other dining option aside from Cheatham Dining Hall) they removed most of the options and raised all the prices so that students are forced to eat at the dining hall or starve. The professors are on average decent, at worst cooky and unorganized, but most are decent with decent classes that prepare students for their fields. Student life is ok, but worsening due to the surplus of underclassmen and lack of facilities to suit them. Local churches have begun to open their parking lots because there isn't enough room for all the students and staff to park. Freshmen are also being stacked into dorm rooms like sardine, with a few freshmen sharing a double with three people. Meanwhile, the science building is getting renovated instead of the condemned dorm hall-which is where they are moving the offices of the science professors. The rules about who is allowed to be a commuter and who is forced to live in the dingy housing (that comes with the expensive for what dining plan) are ridiculous. I have had friend who literally got married to save the money they were wasting on noisy neighbors and starving nights.

I've never experienced racism more in my entire life, than at this "liberal" college. From an admissions counselor asking me to speak to a white Puerto Rican from the island, assuming we had a lot in common, even though I'm a brown Puerto Rican from NYC, three generations removed, and can't speak Spanish, to a professor arguing with me telling me I'm black, when most Latinos are mixed with natives and Europeans. This is just the administration, this doesn't include the countless racist encounters with my small minded, small town peers. The white kids hang out with the white kids, the blacks with the blacks and everyone else from other countries are grouped together, because among most of the whites there is still fear and intolerance. This place is far from woke and is under the guise of white liberal savior.

This review is based on just visiting the school to look around and explore, not as a student or anyone affiliated with the school. Virginia Military Institute (VMI) was founded in 1839, and it is the oldest state-run military college in the United States. While on campus, I visited the VMI Museum, where you'll see a collection of firearms, artifacts that tell the history of the school and its students, and uniforms worn by decorated alumni, including Civil War general Stonewall Jackson. The museum is near, and there's also a gift shop in the building, with fun school merch available. Most Friday afternoons and some Saturday mornings, the Corps of Cadets conducts a 45-minute dress parade, with marching, rifle drills and other pageantry. I didn't get to see any of that, but I did see some cadets walking in formation as a form of discipline (at least, that's what the tour guide said). Those cats must have broken one of the school rules. VMI is a must-visit if you're in the Lexington area. It's such a part of the heart of the town, so you gotta see it.
