After being warmly received by Rabbi Grossbaum, his lovely wife and their adorable children, it was hard not to come back. Unlike many chabad houses, the Rabbi runs a tight ship, services are timely. This is not one of those places that waits for the minyan they know isn't showing up. I've been to several chabad houses where they wait hours for the mythical minyan. Not only do services start and end in a timely fashion, they are filled with song, words of wisdom, and a very friendly atmosphere. No one is going to leave you hanging, someone will find you a seat, grab you a siddur, and if you're not fluent in the liturgy, chances are someone will show you the place. I'm especially fond of the community dinners that are held on one Friday of each month, I've "happened" to join in on a few of these and there's nothing like a good home cooked shabbat meal with freshly baked challah.

If you are unfamiliar with Chabad Inc, they are a worldwide movement of Chasidic Orthodox Jews who follow the Lubavitcher Rebbe. Back in the old country, Chasidic Jews were kind of rebels who championed the piety of the common man, thus these people will always have a soft spot in my egalitarian heart. I am not a traditionally Orthodox person and I do not agree with all of the Rebbe's ideas, but you know two Jews three opinions and all that. The center is run by a wonderful and hardworking husband and wife team. I really cannot fathom how they manage to pull this off, but I am extremely grateful that such a high quality Jewish resource exists in this area. They have programs for men, women, kids and teens. There are also services on Saturday mornings and holidays.

This is the first and oldest Serbian Church in the United States and Canada. The construction of the church started early in 1894. The church bell was presented to the church by the Russian Bishop, the Rt. Reverend Nikola. This church sure stands out. A few years ago my mom was visiting me and we saw the church from the street above and we were determined to find it. This is one gem you won't want to miss. I've taken the kids here a few times now. Best time to do this is at their vespers service. No, I'm not Serbian, and certainly not orthodox, but this place is just unbelievable. It's a little known fact that this is the very first church of its kind in America, built in the early 1890's.....the mother church for that faith, and it's a stunner, and a visual standout as you come over the hill to descend into the town of Jackson and look slightly to the left. (Jackson was also home to the first synagog in California, right around the corner, at what is now the elementary school. )They also have the St. Sava Serbian mission campgrounds on the other side of town where Serbs gather every year over 4th of July weekend for an annual event that's fun and has real cultural significance.

Nice warm welcome. + I loved to see a wide range of demographics from toddlers to the seniors and plenty of younger families. + Nice worship with most of the songs focused on who God is and maybe one song focused on us, as His children. + Solid theological teaching from the associate pastor (Sr. pastor is in recovery for his health). The sermon was clear, logically interpreted using other Scripture (no complex, vague method of interpreting the verses), relatable examples/stories, and I always appreciate looking at the actual Greek word used as that could change the understanding for use using English only. Great visit. We look forward to meeting this body of believers again in this life or the next.
