After my interaction with this rude saleswoman, my husband and I quickly departed and spent our money elsewhere.
It's exceedingly rare to encounter a German -- especially in Bavaria -- who doesn't appreciate when foreigners speak German. My German isn't fluent, but I can effectively communicate my point. I'm sorry not sorry that this old Wildsau lacked the emotional intelligence to understand what I meant by "Ich suche" because my husband, who is Oberpfälz born and bred, had not yet taught me "nur schauen."
That's okay; we went to the shoe section of a nearby department store. The saleslady there was super courteous and friendly, and she understood my Kinderdeutsch perfectly. She even chuckled a little bit in the same way I chuckle whenever a non-native English speaker says something unintentionally cute in English.
