Was it authentic by any means? No, but it definitely gave me a feel for what sushi was and introduced me to Japanese cuisine on a budget. I was in the area and decided to get a roll. Their menu included non-sushi items like udon and bento boxes. They have a limited selection of nigiri, and some donburi bowls. I went for their Salmon Maki roll which includes a side salad and two pieces of gyoza. It was a great deal, and I ate it fresh. The roll was a good ratio, and their rice is gummier than other sushi rice I've had, but it was decent. To add on, I wanted to try their tuna and got 2 pc of nigiri. There was a lot of rice so I took some out, but the fish was also just standard quality you would get a at a poke chain. Overall, I enjoyed the sushi roll and there's not much places that exist like SushiMan, offering Japanese food for reasonable prices. This place is very nostalgic for me! My youngest daughter love coming here when she's in elementary school and she's 21 now. She still love the food! She would order the udon with spam musubi and Inari. I would order the bento box or sushi. Her older sister would order the bento box with the musubi. We all love the food! We've tried many dishes and they are all delicious!! The service has always been amazing!! They are so patient and quick! I've eaten here and bought food to go! I usually go here for food orders since they're super easy to deal with and are very fast with food preparation! I like to go online and see the menu before ordering but they are always very helpful with questions about the menu. It is located in a big plaza with plenty of parking. You can also eat inside (no outside seating) which typically doesn't get too busy inside. The prices are cheap for sushi which is a big reason why I come here. They also aren't stingy with soy sauce, wasabi, ginger, etc. so long as you get a reasonable amount for your entire order! I included a picture of the daily specials! read more

This time I will say the sushi was much better fresh I ordered the spicy tuna forgot the number but it's a meal comes with a salad pot stickers and 2 edamame. After tax and tip rounded off to about 15 bucks it was covered in masago my fave spicy mayo. Spicy tuna was very soft and not overly spicy. Egg was sweet and dense. Salmon and shrimp were fishy and the shrimp had a funky aftertaste. Yellowtail was inedible--I couldn't bite through the fish. Resembled undercooked cartilage. The below average taste from my varied nigiri bento spoke wonders regarding seafood quality. Tuna seemed to be consistently better than the rest but it still would be beneath my average sushi restaurant. Beware of the good prices because it comes at a cost in quality. Covid-19: A taste of Aloha Review #2 I didn't recognize it at first. The picture that accompanied the sign back home in Hawaii is not the same as San Diego. When I bit into my order it was just like how I remembered it. It brought back all the good memories of Hawaii and my childhood. Back in the good old days when my biggest worry was that zit in the middle of my forehead that was about to make me look like a unicorn. I would frequent the Sushi Man in located in Pearl Highlands shopping center in Hawaii often. It was filling, priced right, and quick. It's the same here in San Diego. What I love about this location is the cashier who is originally from Hawaii. She oozes aloha spirit. She sports a flower on her ear, a huge smile, and that beautiful pidgin accent. When she is there she plays local Hawaii music. Sushi Man originated from Hawaii. The original owner moved to San Diego and makes the food. Since the stay at home mandate is in effect because of COVID-19 I try to stop here before our grocery run to Sam's Club. Seeing Ms. Aloha there and eating food from Sushi Man brings me a bit closer to Hawaii, satisfies my hunger so I won't go shopping on an empty stomach and dismantles my urges to hoard. Gotta think of others during this time. Stepping in here reminds me of home and that aloha speaks louder through action. We don't need 4 Sam's club size of toilet paper. moi d How this business is preventing the spread of covid: All of the workers are wearing masks and gloves. Only take out is available. The restroom is unavailable for use to customers. They offer curb side pickup. Food: My kids always get excited to see Spam musubi sold at the stores here. They love it! It is a good thing I do not live close to SushiMan otherwise I would probably be here every week. I ordered an avocado cucumber roll, spicy veggie, veggie tempura and a drink. All of that, $11. While I'm not so sure what was in the veggie tempura, I liked everything. The lady at the register was super sweet and inviting! I walk around town 4 days a week and I've passed by SushiMan a number of times so on today's Stroll I finally decided to stop in and check it out. SushiMan is a small establishment located on the S/E part of the Sam's Club shopping area of the Grove Shopping Center, next to Subway. It has 10 tables and is very clean inside. The young lady at the counter was very Nice and Courteous. I figured that I'd order my go to sushi, The Rainbow Roll, thinking that if I didnt like it i would probably not return for a second visit. I was happily surprised. The SushiMan Rainbow Roll was really good. It also came with a small salad, a couple of edamame, and 2 dumplings. Overall I give SushiMan 4 stars. My only complaint, and I Know that its VERY Minor; but This IS My review, is the small amount of wasabi and ginger they bring you. I suppose you could ask for more...next time Also they do not offer low sodium soy sauce. But to be fair I didnt ask either. I felt that the price I paid for my lunch, and the prices I saw posted for their other items was more than fair. You should try this little out of the way restaurant in Lemon Grove I think you'll like it. I know that I'll be going back soon read more

The Inari was the star of the show! The rolls were big but lacking a little flavor. I would say this is the spot if you want quick affordable sushi. We ate at the place since we were able to sit down. Unfortunately it was really warm inside and there wasn't any AC or fan blowing into the dining room. Only $4.49 for giant Cali rolls! (Over here they call their normal rolls maki-Which has the rice in the outside. Normally we would call makis the smaller ones wrapped in seaweed. And their hand rolls are like what most people know as maki as it's the normal roll with rice only on the inside and not shaped like a cone). The cashier informed me they have their own lingo here since... Anyways for $4.49 I got a side salad, two fried gyoza, and two pieces of edamame!! That's a stellar deal already. Why do we get only two edamame??? Idk but at least we got some lol. The shrimp crunch roll I got for my boyfriend, in my opinion was very good. I'll definitely order that next time. In regards to the nigiri bento. I didn't get to have any but he said it was alright. I mean I think for sure $11 and how many pieces he got it was worth it. I ordered delivery from here last night and was very impressed. I ordered four rolls total: the Dynamite maki, the Philly roll, the Spam roll, and the tuna roll. The Dynamite maki came with a small salad, two gyozas, and a couple of edamame pods. The biggest highlight of my meal was the Dynamite maki. There's no description of the ingredients on the menu, but I was pleasantly surprised to discover a tempura shrimp roll topped with spicy tuna and a special dynamite sauce that tasted spicy, sweet, and a little vinegary and brought out the bright flavor of the tuna. While there are a few sushi places closer to my house, none of them compare to the value Sushiman. $40 from a different restaurant only got me two rolls and one of them was a lot smaller than I thought. I was still hungry after finishing my meal. $30 from Sushiman got me twice that much. It was an absolute feast of a sushi dinner and everything was fresh and tasty. Everything looked good, so it was a little difficult to decide. I usually try different things, but for my first visit I decided on a safe bet. Chicken Teriyaki Bento for $8 to go. I could have gotten it spicy, but it was $1 more so I didn't. The meal was well presented and tasty. It came with a small salad, two edamame, two gyoza, two California roll pieces, rice, and the Chicken Teriyaki. The gyoza were particularly crisp and tasty, but everything was very good. I saw a lot of items I was interested in and I liked that they have specials everyday. I'll certainly be back! We usually call in our order and the wait is almost always 15-20 minutes, so I recommend calling in your orders for pick-up because more than likely, your order will be ready by the time you get there :) I usually get the philly maki or the kids pack (avocado roll and spam masubi) *chef's kiss*. Their food has definitely rescued me and made me feel better on my more tiring days at work. Their sushi is super well priced for what they give you and the quality is always on point.
