While I absolutely enjoy their hand roll, the rest of the food was meh, we just ate them because didn't want to waste food... that I think due to inexperienced cook. The shishto peppers, one of the most easy one to make, cheap too! A box of shishto peppers will only cost less than $2. The secret is just the cast iron should be hot enough to get that charred taste and not over cooked it. Their version is really plain like there's no seasoning (salt, usually) and roasting didn't bring out much of peppers flavor. Both fried calamari and fried octopus, same batter, it's either wrong recipe or wrong temperature. The batter was in a powdery mushy taste and super greasy. I think price is high for the portion. Our party of 2 walked in around 6pm on a Friday night and we're seated right away! We beat the rush by half an hour. Everyone was helpful and friendly and very attentive. The restaurant was clean and tidy and the music was just loud enough to drown out other conversations other than your own. We ordered miso soups, tamago sushi, chicken curry katsu, the bentley, and the red dragon roll. Everything was delicious!! The price was also very reasonable. The most recent one was last night a salmon was not deboned properly and stabbed the roof of my tongue pretty deep. Which accidents happen, but then i got the snowman roll which was supposed to come with snow crab according to their website online, so when i called in, they denied and said it comes with imitation crab. It was a cut roll of 5 pieces for almost $14. I asked, "So an imitation crab cut roll is $13?" And she said yes. We got a snow crab hand roll for $13 & an imitation crab cut roll for $13. Came by for some dinner and made a reservation for 2 seats at the bar. We ordered a few items from appetizers to their specials. It was alright. The sweet shrimp was preciously frozen so it wasn't as fresh as we were hoping. The specialty roll was tasty though. The items here were quite pricy so we thought it was going to be a lot higher quality. I've been coming here since 2014 when my grandma was still active and lively - She loves this place, my family from Asia loves this place, and my parents love this place. It's changed A LOT over the years in terms of decor, menu changes, pandemic restrictions....but I still love coming here because they've been consistently delicious with their fish quality. The first time I came here in 2014, they were able to accommodate a large table of us, but nowadays due to the pandemic I imagine they can only do a table of ~6. I like the overall vibe of this place, it's very casual but you know that you're getting great fish. The sushi chefs will occasionally give us leftover scraps or ask us to try a new menu item that they're thinking about - in the past year creative menu items have been dulled due to COVID. The staff here has been consistently attentive and friendly since 2014 and it keeps my family coming back here! I love that this place is still up and running and I'll update my review again in the next few years. read more

One of my favorite sushi spots in the OC. They have everything I love from a good Japanese sushi restaurant- uni, toro, ankimo, tako wasabi, oysters, etc. I usually start off by ordered the hot green tea. I love the Spanish Mackerel, spicy scallop roll, baked blue crab roll, and the Bentley Roll (salmon and tuna)! The fish is fresh and good quality. The rice to fish ratio with the nigiri is excellent. The salmon skin salad comes in a huge portion so make sure to share that. Make sure to look at the boards behind the sushi chefs for their chef's special. They have everything you want from a Japanese sushi restaurant. The only complaint I have is that one of the sushi chefs is a little too heavy-handed on the sauce (ponzu?) they put on the sushi rice. One time, the rice in the nigiri was completely drenched and falling apart from the sauce. I wanted to complain but no one in my party wanted to. So every time I come here now, I make sure to look if he's here! Lol. Great service, reasonable price, excellent selections, and plenty of parking. read more

The Nigiri 2 pieces for 4 bucks is an okay deal but they skimp on the size and thickness of the fish, but the Cali rolls 4 pieces is 4 bucks - which is half the size of the regular sized order so not really a deal for happy hour, just half an order for half the price. Same goes for Jalapeño Poppers they show 4 pieces in the pic but only give you half a jalapeño that's been cut in half. Lol. The fish quality was good. Been to this place probably about 6x in the past two months. Even took my family here and spent almost $400 during one of our visits. Had it originally pegged as a 5 star but the last two experiences really knocked it down. For the positives, definitely some high quality fish and for an absolutely fair price point. My favorites are the halibut fin and jumbo scallops. They are a little liberal with the yuzu juice but you can always just ask them to back off on it. My not so favorites are: 1. They never have Sweet Shrimp in stock regardless of the times I've gone and 2. The sea urchin they use has a much "darker" taste to it than the umami salty and sweet kinda I'm used to (maybe a different kind of urchins from a different point of origin?). Other than that, for the most part, fish is always good. What really knocked them down in my rating was how slow the service was the last time I dined in and my separate to-go order before that. Ordered my usual fishes but this time as a to-go order which was prepared by the main sushi chef. When I got home, I was shocked by the absolutely meager portioning of the pieces of nigiri. I'm thinking the chef was in a foul mood or was just having a bad day because the serving was nothing like how it usually is. Some slices of fish were cut unevenly almost see through in some part while other pieces barely covered the rice. The 10 pieces barely covered a little more than half the to-go container with a giant wad of ginger filling up the space. I was so upset that I had to immediately let my buddies know since we had found this place together. I came back later on that same week with the hopes that the to-go experience was a one off bad day. As far as the fish quality and portioning, it was back to normal. Nice, clean and delicious pieces that were the perfect size. As for why another reduction in rating? The service. It was so agonizingly slow that my back was locking up due to the wait. There were only 4 total tables there with one chef and at least 5 waiters including the manager (two waitresses came in during the middle of our dinner). Instead of being attentive and courteous of our already too long wait, the waiters and manager went behind the curtain and were heard joking around in the back. I'll probably be back to dine in because of the fish quality and convenience but I just won't be expecting as much from here on. read more

My boyfriend and I went here for date night because it was right next to the nail salon we went to and boy was that a mistake... Got in at around 7:15, we were one of the only tables there. We ordered and started getting some appetizers. A table of 8 was sat next to us and we were waiting for a while. We're patient people. We were busy talking for a while and after an hour of no food we started to wonder why the table of 8 who was sat after the apps came out was getting their sushi rolls before we got ours. About an hour and half after we ordered we asked where our food was. Twice. The sushi chefs were being very loud and obnoxious. It was hard to hear each other talking. We finally start getting our food slowly. At the two hour mark we just asked for the rest of our food to be canceled so we could leave. We spent almost $300 and would have spent more if we didn't cancel some of our food. The waitress offered a complimentary beer which we declined because we had already had some and sake too. The table of 8 finishes eating and leaves and we still don't have our food. They didn't comp anything on our check for having us wait almost two hours for our sushi. I thought they might take off a sushi roll or anything comparable to a beer price. When we asked what happened the waitress informed us that the sushi chef was drunk and other people had complained too. So that was our night. Sushi world ruined date night. read more

Me and another person were driving around looking for a place to eat. We found this place on Yelp and decided to check it out on that Saturday at about 9pm. When we arrived there was a few people inside enjoying their food. We decided to sit at the bar. Once seated, I wasn't super hungry so I got their two specials of the day: Escolar Carpaccio and an Uni Oyster Shooter. I was instantly mortified when I saw the chef torching my escolar. But why?! It arrived on a plate with six pieces topped with sesame, spouts, and with ponzu sauce. I probably would have liked it better just raw. The chef over torched it and it wasn't even seared. It was pretty cooked and not to my preference. Oh well. The uni shooter also wasn't great. The ponzu ratio was too much and it was too much as a shot. I'm not sure why but it was also bitter. Not sure if it was the ponzu or the oyster. The person I came with got a baked blue crab handroll, spider roll, and scallop nigiri. They were pretty pleased with their food. The pricing here is a little lower than other sushi places. The quality is alright for the area and price. They have a large selection. They have an omakase menu, boxes and chirashi as well. They have now opened back up their outdoor seating!!! Which is super awesome. They have been super covid compliant with 6 ft apart distancing, hand santizers, plexiglasses, sanitizing between customers (tables, chairs and menus.) The servers and the cooks are all wearing masks. I just love it here. The food is always fresh and amazing. The customer service is impeccable by the whole staff but HIMARI always goes above and beyond to make sure our visits are always special and fun. We really have a great time and she makes sure that we are always well taken care of. She is just an all around great human being that is super kind and caring and it just shows everytime we visit. I was more shocked than disappointed or angry. Service was OK - the appetizers came after my sushi which was weird. We ordered a roll and few sushi options. The quality of fish was decent but I could not believe what I was tasting. Half of the sushi was soaked in lemon juice. I don't mean drizzled, I truly mean soaked. It was so sour that left the acidic feeling in your mouth. I had to keep drinking water to wash it down. The roll had some kind of sauce on it but that was also sour with lemon juice. The other sushi without lemon wasn't great because the rice was a bit on the dry side. In general, I thought I was being pranked based on how awful the meal was. Lemon juice everywhere...... just could not believe there would be a real restaurant serving this kind of food for money.
