Imagine how gutted I felt upon discovering it was no longer there! But wait. It's not all bad news. A new Japanese place has replaced it called Evis Kushi and Sake Bar. It's only been open a month, and today I was their first (and so far) only customer. I asked my waitress what Kushi was and she explained it is a type of Japanese bar food, and the menu is pretty much what I'd expect to be served if I was sitting in a Japanese bar; lots of little snack plates like gyoza and octopus balls. They also have a type of yakitori platter which comes with seven varieties of skewers including beef and practically every part of a chicken including the skin, heart and giblets. Not a huge fan of offal so I swapped the hearts for a stick of unagi and the giblets for enoki wrapped in bacon. The chicken breast was good but nothing unexpected. The skin on the other hand was sensational. I should point out that I am a freak for chicken skin - if I buy a supermarket chicken I'll eat the skin, the wings and the parson's nose and feed the rest to the cat. The beef was also good and the enoki and bacon was an interesting combo. The skewer of chicken mince and the eel came on a separate plate with yakitori sauce. Really good, particularly the unagi So, sorry to see the last of Aka Tombo, but at least they've passed the torch onto a worthy successor. Really good food. Definitely be back soon.

This. Place. Makes. Tasty. Sushi…read more Ok, so here's the deal: the food doesn't look particularly high-quality. In fact, the presentation kind of looks like pre-made sushi at a grocery store. Note that everything in their display window are hand-rolls. (Not the bitty 'set of 6' style, just one big honker.) They have a ton of churn during the lunch hour, so they need to prepare all the fish / rolls starting at 9am. That's why there are several meters of sushi sitting there by 11am. But it all tastes good. There was one with tuna and basil that was *UNBELIEVABLY GOOD* and easily worth the cost... it really wasn't that expensive. Yes, this from a sushi to-go place. The owner of the place came out carrying the dish and stood over me carrying on about how they can't show it as it is on the menu because then you couldn't see the veggies (never mind they don't mention custard in the description). Long story short, I refused to take back the dish I'd returned and refused to pay for it. After a little bit more arguing they took it off the bill. The dish was worth $6. If the owner had just said "I'm sorry it's not what you were expecting, would you like something else?", I'd still be going there today. I was so upset and mad to be argued with over such a ridiculous thing, especially given they knew me as a regular customer. No one should be treated like that at a restaurant. There are places as good or better for the price where you don't get total rudeness when you send back a dish that wasn't as advertised in the first place.

Inherent to legitimate Japanese restaurants, all the staff welcomed us when we entered. The young boy who served us was professional and courteous. My dining partner is vegetarian and questioned whether one of the items on the menu were was meat-free, and ultimately decided to order something else because it wasn't. Then, the waiter came back a few minutes later to let him know that the other item he ordered also contained fish, wondering whether my partner would like to change his order. This attention to detail is what more restaurants need. Similarly, when presenting us with edamame, the waiter asked us if we knew how to eat it properly. Being Japanese cuisine experts, naturally we did. But it was a nice thought anyway, and the fact that the staff are prepared to teach customers how to eat the cuisine in a traditional fashion is noteworthy. ~ Each table had a candle. I love candles. I love tables with candles. A+. ~ As mentioned above, the staff here are legitimately Japanese. There seems to be an increasing trend in Melbourne for quasi-Japanese restaurants that are actually run by Chinese or some other oriental people assuming that no one would be able to tell the difference. This is not the case at Aka Tombo, and you can certainly tell by the quality of the food, the presentation, and the mannerisms of the staff. Downsides: ~ Pretty expensive. Japanese food always tends to be on the higher end of restaurant pricings, but just be warned: I had the chef's special (5 best pieces of fish that day) I feel that $21 for five pieces of sushi is quite pricey, and it wasn't particularly satiating. ~ Small food portions. For the price you pay, the serving sizes are horrible small. Amongst getting quite a few dishes between the two of us (and simultaneously breaking the bank) we still left the restaurant feeling like we could eat more. If you are an authentic Japanese experience, this is the place. But be prepared that it will also most likely break the bank. A great place to bring a friend or go on a date -- the atmosphere is divine. Not sure how well this place would be able to manage a group, though. NB: Came here at 20:00 on a Saturday night and there was only one other group of two people here. Not sure about Samantha H.'s comments about "bookings necessary" , but we certainly didn't need one and from my experience you won't need one either.
