Love, love the ambience in this new Japanese restaurant in S Surrey. We came here 2 nights ago on a date night and thoroughly enjoyed the food and atmosphere here. We ordered 2 specialty rolls: sunflower and can't remember the other name of roll. We didn't like the sunflower that much but liked the other roll. Their tempura was good. Batter was light and crispy. I also liked their miso soup. It had pieces of seaweed in it and I loved it. We also enjoyed their ebi sunomono salad. Their teriyaki chicken in hot pan was delicious as well with a bed of veggies in the bottom. I will come back to try other more traditional rolls. read more

This is a spacious and welcoming restaurant that is great for big and small groups. My family loves udon. The soup base at Sushi Mori is delicious, not too salty but flavorful. Their sushi is fresh with the right balance in terms of ingredients and flavor. I would certainly love to bring my family and friends there again and would recommend this place to others. read more

Okay, as anyone who's read my reviews knows, I'm a big-time lover of all Japanese cuisine, and you also know I usually don't review any restaurant until I've eaten at it at least two or three times. But for Sushi Mori I am making an exception. The reason is simple, everything everybody ordered in our party of four was unbelievably fantastic: from the picture perfect beef udon served in a hot stone bowl, to the artistically stunning fresh fish on the nigiri sushi and also as sashimi, to the incredible sunomono and tempura, not a single element was lacking. Also, for those who love Sukiyaki, please order the bulgogi, it tastes just like some of the best sukiyaki I've eaten. On a sign outside the restaurant, it says, "Taste the real Japan," but I would change it to, "Taste the real Japan's finest prepared cuisine." The reason? There are many Japanese restaurants in the lower mainland that provide authentic Japanese cuisine, but this is the first that I think would gain significant notoriety for excellence if it were actually located in Japan. Incidentally, I lived in Japan and spoke Japanese exclusively for nearly two years. Though I'm not Japanese, I'm not too bad a judge of Japanese food... for a gaijin, that is. read more

They will also not come back around unless they are serving an order or taking one other than that, try your luck flagging someone down and they too will disappear. Very disappointed in the restaurant, the pics on the web site make the place appear substantially nicer than it is....the music was so loud I had to ask the server to turn it down so I could hear my friend speak... didn't have the item on he menu I had come explicitly for [oysters motoyaki, not a rarity in other Japanese restaurants], ordered a Spicy Tuna with Endive salad, very disappointing, this dish was far sweeter than spicy, really unpleasantly sweet and defeats the purpose of having something spicy. The next big disappointment was when I ordered the spicy pork Gyoza, they arrived looking like large insect larvae floating in black blood, or some other vile vomit concoction. This place is an absolutely joke! My wife and I have been customers with them almost since they opened at this location. Today was the last time. We placed an order at 7:06pm on August 8, 2017. After placing the order we decided to make changes and called back at 7:09. The initial order took 1:22 to place. When we called back the person that answered the phone barely spoke english and had to get another employee to assist. Well after 4 minutes on hold they decided that us changing the order is not ok and began arguing with my wife saying that the food has been made and we cant change it. We politely asked again and after some back an forth they decided to make the changes. Once I arrived the male began arguing with me and telling me that it took 5 minutes to call back and that changing the order is not ok. Again, this went on and on and several times he told me that he doesnt care if we come back or not. Well we got home and they still managed to screw up our order even after my wife asked specifically what is on a Philadelphia roll due to a sever allergy. He then proceeded to yell at her saying she was not right and she got mixed up. He failed to say all ingredients which is what she had asked for. (preface - I lived in Japan, and like Japanese sushi). When my partner and I walked in and got a seat, I immediately asked her if she'd like to leave. 'why?' she asked in a Japanese accent. 'Because the staff here are all Korean' I said. She thought about it a second, and we decided to stay. We've had good and bad experiences in Sushi restaurants run by non-Japanese. Some have been awesome (Victoria sushi in New West is Korean run and is great). And please don't get your flame throwers warmed up. I'm a yuge fan of korean food, koreans, and every other type of person on the planet. The food at Sushi Mori was ok, but certainly not authentic Japanese sushi. If you take away the 'authentic' filter, and just approach from the point of view of the western palate looking for Japanese-ish food, this was pretty good. I wouldn't have known the difference before I lived in Japan. So, take my 2 stars with a grain of salt, or a dab of shoyu, your call. The chicken karaage had a good taste, but in Japan it isn't usually wings and mini drumsticks, the dip for the shrimp tempura was probably just regular shoyu (dark), and was missing the shredded daikon (I think thats what goes in the diluted shoyu with sake dipping sauce)... anyway... minor unless you've had it the right way for several years. I wanted to give 2.5 stars, but alas this site doesn't let one quibble. So, if you're looking for the real deal, keep looking. If you're not even sure what the real deal would look like, this gets 4.5 stars. read more

One of the better sushi places around here but the service is HORRIBLE. waited for almost 40 minutes before anyone took our plates away or give us a bill or even ask us how we were doing. Happy birthday ended with awful service and bug infested food at Sushi Mori. Server had the odacity to tell us to not come back since we complained. We used to be regulars but haven't been back for about half a year. This was our go to restaurant. Very disappointed it's so terrible now. The hot plate food was served raw, the crunchy coconut tuna dish was stale and cold, the aburi nigiri combo was barely seared and just when we thought maybe they got the unagi plate right, there was a giant deep fried cockroach or wingless moth in the salad. My husband is not picky, he usually just picks off any undesirables (dirt, hair, bugs) from his plate and continues eating without complaint. But this bug was huge, like you can't miss it, size of my pinky. We only complained about the raw food on the 'hot plate' and the bug. Rather than just apologizing and leaving it at that, the server/manager had to lecture us that restaurants don't wash salads so there will always be bugs in them and that we shouldn't come back since our taste doesn't match the food the restaurant serves.
