Having just visited Japan this past March, I appreciate being able to really tell what is "authentic" sushi restaurants. Sushi Kazu is it, it is not run by other Asians but purely Japanese. From the moment you sit down, you're served with an appetizer - to really whet your appetite - without having to ask for it or be billed for it! It was a crab and cucumber salad, with a mayo dressing that's not sweet, perfect for summer days! This demonstrates the Japanese hospitality so well. Everything we had: from the sushi, to grilled items like Takoyai and Yakitory skewers, to Tempura, and even the plainer stuff like udon noodle soup and (simply) salted kamachi hama, was flavorful and carefully crafted. If I HAD to frown on one thing, it was the specials menu where they didn't make the dot prominent enough so I mis-read the Salmon Belly special to be $55 when it was $5.5 (LOL). Really solid sushi- so glad I tried this place for lunch. Portion sizes of the fish are really generous, and everything was very fresh, the ambience reminded me of being in Japan. Wouldn't expect this sort of hole in the wall place to have quality sushi on par with some of the best sushi places in Denver- but it's really authentic and good. We picked up some basic rolls for dinner, some of the worst sushi we've tried. It was warm, rice was mushy, overall sour taste and the sushi tasted super fishy. We called to let them know and they offered for us to bring the food back for a refund. When i showed up they told me that's how their food is supposed to taste and other people hadn't complained. I've been coming to this restaurant & the Aurora location for over 10 years. It WAS a favorite. We came here tonight and had a terrible experience. Checked in at 6:30 and was told it would be a 20-25 minute wait. No problem. After waiting for 40 minutes, I went and checked they still did not have a table ready. Finally at 7:45, we were seated. The waitress never asked us for drink orders, and we weren't given a menu except for the paper slip you write on. I asked for one, and one was never brought. We ordered a round of sushi, things were missing & the sushi was poor quality. Not rolled well, rice falling apart, warm. We were then told that it was last call and this would be our last opportunity to order. That would've been nice to know prior to being seated, and after waiting for over an hour. The waitress was inattentive and honestly rude at points, the wait was ridiculously longer than stated, and the food wasn't good. Safe to say I'll be looking for a new AYCE spot. The chef was great and he evenade us a unique roll he made on the spot he's been working on. This place is so underrated. In Japanese culture they teach humility a lot. As if to reflect the very value and discipline, this restaurant's existence is extremely humble. It's almost as if they hate to get recognized. Whatever the case may be, my culturally diverse friends (married couple) wanted to meet me for a nice Tuesday evening meal at this restaurant. It had been a while the last time I had dined here; it sure was good to be back. I could always go for some pieces of sushi and sashimi at a place like this but I was craving for something more family style. After glancing at the menu, the sashimi and shrimp tempura combo (that comes with salad, miso soup and rice) caught my attention. It was a quiet Tuesday night so service was pretty fast. I was hungry for a nice dinner so everyone's food coming out from the kitchen so quickly truly satisfied our famished souls/mind. The 5 piece-set of my combo beautifully decorated our table. The hamachi kama we shared was a good portion and was perfectly prepared/cooked. My friend couple had nabeyaki udon (husband) and some rolls from the sushi menu (wife) and they all looked so good. I don't hear many people talk about this place (like I stated at the beginning of this review.) But I am officially declaring today that Sushi Kazu has a place in my heart. Newly renovated, under new management, and new chef. We were very curious how things would be different. Unfortunately the food fell short for us. While the layout of the restaurant remained the same, minor updates to the interior were noticeable. Service was extraordinarily slow, but I'm not factoring that into the rating because they were completely packed and they've only been open for a few weeks now. We ordered the chef special, a katsudon, a few select pieces of nigiri, and fresh wasabi. The chef special comes with soup, salad, cooked salmon, sashimi, spicy tuna roll, shrimp tempura roll, and tempura mix. The katsudon had really good, well-integrated flavors of rice, egg, and sauce. The katsu itself was pretty basic and average, maybe even a little below average. Comforting though... I'd rate this dish 3.5 stars alone. Soup was standard miso, and it's always a welcome part of a full course japanese dining experience. The salad was nice and fresh with a pleasant ginger miso dressing. Tempura was perfectly executed on average ingredients. Batter and fry were excellent. The shrimp and veggies were fine, but they were just fine and nothing great. Cooked salmon was decent, above average, but nothing special, especially for being at a Japanese sushi restaurant. The fish in the sashimi and sushi were cut in a strange way. Extra large cut, which some enjoy, but I don't prefer it. The fish was fresh, but not top quality. Sushi rice was average. Soy sauce was just that super salty, low grade soy sauce. Not particularly tasty with sushi for me. The fresh wasabi was okay, but certainly not worth the extra $10. It looked like it was grated like parmesan cheese. It should have been grated on shark skin or something to make a finer paste. Seemed like a waste of a potentially good ingredient. I would rate the sushi here 55/100. Edible, but not enjoyable. The unagi we ordered was average, and the tamago was okay, but one of the worst we had. To put things into perspective though, I wouldn't say that I ever had a tamago that tasted bad. I wonder if I'm being too harsh. The food is okay to eat, but when I compare the new Kazu with all the other Japanese sushi restaurants in town, it's simply not competitive. read more

I am so glad I found Sushi Kazu! It is definitely a hole in the wall sushi bar and it does not disappoint. Service was excellent, they have the sweetest employees! For my first visit here, I tried the Chicken Kar-age as an appetizer. The chicken was cooked perfectly! It was moist and flavorful. As my main course, I tried two sushi rolls: Spider and Salmon. The salmon roll was amazing, you can tell that the fish is fresh! I was expecting something a little different for the Spider roll but it was still really good! I love the shrimp tempura in the roll. Having a neighborhood family run sushi bar is such a treat! I have been going here for over 8 years! The staff is friendly and the food is always awesome! They greet you like family when you walk in. I am so happy to see that they are doing well during the shut down! Pick up business is brisk! Before shut down this was one of our favorite happy hour places.... Lots of selections on the menu for HH at reasonable prices .. not to mention the buy one get on sake (glad I live close by!). I have some favs to share with you! Love the hand rolls, they don't skimp on the fish either... top of the list, spicy scallop hand roll Love the sushi pieces... large and fish is always fresh Love their homemade ponzu sauce (I avoid the soy.. just a personal preference). Been going here for years. I walked in yesterday and right away I knew something was different. It changed ownership. I wanted to leave as I am particular about where I eat sushi. This was my secret place. My friend said to give it a try. Well, I can tell you I won't be back. We had the spicy tuna hand roll, salmon and tuna sashimi, the baked mussels, volcano roll, hip hop roll and ordered the seared salmon belly special. The spicy tuna roll was good. Never received the salmon belly but was charged for it. Told the waitress and she said oh, you didn't receive it???? Then proceeded to take it off the bill. The hip hop roll we left uneaten. I couldn't put my finger on it but it was not tasty. The volcano roll was not hot/baked. They torched the top to make it looked baked and warm but it was cold and the tempura mushy. The sashimi was ok. Baked mussels would have been nice if not for the bbq or whatever sauce they put on the spicy mayo. While sitting there, we heard multiple customers ask if it changed ownership. It was cold and dark outside when we came here so cold sushi was not appetizing but here there is a splendid repertoire so that the whole family could feast on something tailored to their own preferences. I gorged on gyoza (Japanese dumpling dating to WWII) and Yakitori ( Japanese chicken skewer served with a mild sesame sauce with seeds on top). There was basically no one there so service was able to be amazing, fast, kind and, attentive. Sushi Kazu is hole in the wall but it looks and is very authentic Japanese cuisine prepared partly by a old veteran sushi chef. Other sushi is also great and made for a excellent dinner. No way! "Happy hour" all day Sunday?! *Proceeds to buy at least one piece of every happy hour item*...(I know that's a lot of food...don't judge ) Gets the check: $70. Let's just say, it wasn't the smartest decision I've made. In my defense, the only time we use math in medical school is for the occasional equation or the much more frequent "what is the minimum score I need to pass this class?" In regards to the food, I enjoyed the various flavors. They have the traditional options found in any other sushi place. But that's just makes the problem worse. I could have gone to another restaurant and got the same amount/kinds of food for easily half the price. And I don't think the quality of the food justifies the price either. For example: I had two fish egg sushi pieces whose seaweed were stuck together. When I lifted one piece up, the other sushi's fish eggs spilled. The utter disappointment. UGGGGGGHHHHH. I'd hate to give this place 2 stars because the staff was amazing and soooo nice. That's why I was torn giving this place such a low score. But in then, I come for the food, not the staff. Bottom line: if you come for maybe a few pieces of sushi, then it makes sense to come here. I ask the Chef to choose for me. I started with the LARGEST Hamachi Kama I have ever seen. You can get it with teriyaki glaze or plain I chose plane with a side of Ponzu sauce. The chef served me halibut, razor clams, freshwater clam, monk fish, and white fish. The price is very reasonable, and the fish was super fresh. I finished with Unagi perfectly broiled. The fried food was good, Karaage (Japanese Fried Chicken) and tempura, that we ordered. Sushi rice was sub-par, maybe not using great quality of rice. Seafood seems okay. One of the younger waitresses was nice, but the other senior one seemed to have a very bad day, at least her attitude to us. We got no oshibori (hot towel to clean your hands before dining in a Japanese restaurant) like other tables, maybe we were assumed to be other nationality that had a conflict with Japanese EEZ recently, can't figure out why. Finally, my kid happened to puke like outside the restaurant near the curb and I wanted to clean it up. The senior waitress didn't seem to understand what I say, and didn't want to give me any paper towel. Even when she reluctantly gave it to me, she told me be sure to bring it back... I paid $120 for a meal at a below average Japanese restaurant and she was questioning me not to bring a roll of paper towel back... My boo and I came here to celebrate the Lunar New Year and the experience was nothing short of fantastic. This isn't a trendy or flashy sushi place so if you're looking for something fun, this may not be the place. It's more of a hole in the wall, mom and pop kind of place and I dig that. I dig that they have a stellar selection of sashimi, nigiri, sushi and hand rolls but also a hearty selection of udon and other soups if you want to warm up with a big bowl. We ordered the nabeyaki udon and it was enough for two people so you can get the best of both worlds! We got a number of nigiri pieces including octopus, crab, eel and tuna and a spicy tuna and spicy salmon handroll---everything was awesome. I highly suggest the handroll! Come here with a semi empty belly and patience since there are only seems to be three people working-the cook, sushi chef and server. All were very friendly and asked how everything was, they genuinely seemed interested in how the experience was. They have lunch specials so this may be an awesome spot for a quick bento box or sushi. I say "may be" because it's a small place and I imagine gets full pretty quickly. Love to visit Sushi Kazu and say Hello to Kazu san and enjoy his creativity on the plate. Yes, he is Japanese and cant compare his life long creativity with other sushi places. There is lil something about him that creates that little something about on the plate makes this place stand out from the rest. Today's visit was during lunch rush and all of the tables were filled up so ended up seating at the sushi bar. We got served by new lady and I can see she was trying hard but definitely new to the business. We got the drink and food in very timely manner but as we were waiting for refill on drinks, noticed she totally forgot to bring us the privilege of seating on the sushi bar which are warm hand towels and dish of appetizer (?) like. My friend's favorite sushi is Sushi Kazu. So when I get the chance to meet her, she told me she wants to go to Sushi Kazu. Ahh.. I have been to this establishment before. That faithful day for Lunch and recent visit was on Thursday March 7th 2013. Time was about 12:40hrs. At that time, this establishment was still packed with the Lunch-goers. We managed to get the seats at the Sushi Bar, the exact area which Hubs and I was many MOONs ago to Sushi Kazu. Yes, the Sushi Chefs are friendly, smilling... every single time each customers/patrons comes and finishes their meal. This time around the servers who assists us are much more inviting and welcoming. Z and her 2 year old son, I guess are regulars here and somehow the servers know Z and her son so well enough... Its not easy having a 2 year old along.. so at least the servers tend to "entertain" Z's son. After some patrons left, we decide to move ourselves to the booth seating in which is more comfortable. Initially, I wanted to order the Uni and Amaebi, but our server mentioned that they do not offer those that day. *Sad Face* *Big Bummer* Oh Well... From what I could recall these were the items I ordered for Lunch : * Fresh Water Eel Nigiri ($4.85) * Japanese Omelette Nigiri/Sushi ($3.30) * Spicy Octopus Sushi ($4.10) * Green Mussels ($4.95) * Magic Mushrooms ($7.95) While Z opt for the Sashimi and Tempura ($8.90) and Juice ($1.75) for her son. The food to be ready at our table took abit or a while. In which, I am ok for that coz for one, I am not in a rush, but still.. it felt like eternity. I was so hungry... So when the food came, so far its A-OK. The portion of the rice is smaller, compared to the proteins or whatever they put on the rice. I am OK for that too. Thankfully the Magic Mushrooms and Green Mussels came out hot, I like. Still curious about the Magic Mushrooms, though... If I am not mistaken it comes with Crab, Avocado, Cream Cheese with Seaweed and Spicy Sauce - FRIED, I like, double like... The rest of Nigiri was just A-OK too, though I so wish to have more of the Spicy Octopus Nigiri/Sushi. All in all this recent visit was just A-OK, though I cant deny the servers took their precious time to assist my friend Z. At least Z get to finish her lunch that day. Friendly authentic Japanese owners (Yama & Miho, we asked). Recommended by friends, glad we went. Open sushi-chef bar was rollong out beautiful trays all evening. Sachi was our nice server. We had delicious spicy tuna roll plus salmon, shrimp and scallop sushi. Balls of octopus were succulent. Tempora shrimp and veggies were nice to break up the sushi. Both deserts were yummy. Took home miso and hamachi kama, also delicious. All sushi places are pricey for quality and this place was average for that category but I could have made it more affordable by selecting plates and combos but we just wanted to just pick around. Comfortable atmosphere. We were almost the first ones there at 5:30, but did not get that weird empty feeling at all, probably because it is a smaller place. I've been to Japan several times and other American sushi restaurants, and I'm glad the owners wisely traded the floating plates for a more personal experience. Good thing we arrived early because it filled up to a such a busy level by 6:30 or 7 on a Saturday, we had to ask for more water as the wasabi is plentiful. ;) We heard even the kids laughing instead of the usual whining or crying. It's March and I've been uncomfortably chilly at the last 6 restaurants, but I noticed right away I didn't need my over-sweater here which was nice. Don't judge a book by its cover because this place looks kinda sketchy on the outside - I know, not exactly reassuring for sushi - but the inside will surprise you. From the simple decor to the elderly sushi chef behind the counter, this place feels like you've been transported out of a strip mall and into a quaint japanese shop. I didn't really know what to expect the first time I ate here but the sushi was so good that halfway into my meal, I already knew I would be back. The flavors are amazing, the service was pretty quick, and the rolls are pretty sizeable. I've always gone on saturday nights and the fish has always been fresh. This is definitely become my go to sushi spot. My fiance and I tried Sushi Kazu for the first time last week and we were BLOWN AWAY by the quality of fish and the presentation! My parents own a Japanese sushi restaurant in California, so I grew up on having fresh fish prepared by my Japanese father. I was craving sushi really bad last week, and heard that Sushi Kazu was also run by a Japanese chef and had been in business for 18 years! I had to try it. We ordered way too much food for 2 people, but we were so happy with everything we got! The salmon (my favorite) was fresh, buttery, and delicious. I was pleasantly surprised that the chef gave us yellowtail belly instead of just yellowtail, which was a huge treat!! The unagi was sweet and savory, -- my one recommendation would be to grill it so that it's got a bit of char on it-- SO GOOD. I also tried an order of the tamago - which I have to say I almost cried because it tasted and looked just like my dad's. This is how you know it's AUTHENTIC FOOD. We also ordered several rolls to try - the Sashimi Tempura roll was still crispy, warm from the fryer, and amazing. The New York was one of my favorites, with spicy tuna, tempura, crab, and avocado. We also tried the Godzilla, the Crazy Roll, and of course, a good old-fashioned California roll. Overall, I was so impressed by all the food and the fantastic service! This was my first time splurging on sushi since moving to Colorado in 2018, and man, I was really missing out!! The kitchen/hot food menu wasn't on their website the first time we ordered, but we picked up a to-go menu so I'm excited to try my other Japanese favorites soon! We'll definitely be back!!
