My favorite market in Rennes, and the only thing I look forward to on Saturdays! This market…read moresprawls across the city center, and because it's so close to the Sainte Anne metro station, it makes it all the more appealing to me! There are hundreds of vendors selling all sorts of products: flowers, fresh produce, meats, seafood, baked goods, sweets, cheeses, and dairy products, as well as food trucks and stands. All the prices are relatively similar, but there are a few stalls that sell their produce for dirt-cheap prices. The produce is VERY fresh, so you should consider buying only what you can eat within the next few days. I particularly love the baked goods section of the market, located inside the covered buildings, because of the wide variety. I get my favorite mini kouign amann from here, as well as beautifully baked brioche loaves. No one has told me a definitive hours of operations, but to my understanding they're open from at least 9am-1pm, but go as early as possible, because with each passing moment, it gets busier and busier, until you're drowning in a crowd of people.

I travelled up from Nantes to have a look round the city in general and check out this market in…read moreparticular. One of the biggest and most famous in France, Le Marché des Lices is pretty great! There must be several hundred stalls selling any food you could possibly want: fresh fruit and veg, bread, cakes, meats (cooked and raw), honey, and much more. If I lived closer I would have dived in and grabbed some of the delicious looking fresh (and often still alive) seafood, but I don't reckon the smells would have been too friendly after putting them in my bag and walking round all day in the glorious spring sun. Round the corner there is also a large flower market, but for me, it was all about the food. The fruit and veg are considerably cheaper than the fare I can find in Nantes, and the quality is excellent. Keep an eye out for the jam stalls - it will probably take an age testing out the dozens and dozens of delicious jams but that's half the fun isn't it. I bagged a kiwi and pomelo confiture with a really unique taste and I can't wait to eat it with fresh bread. Many of the vendors speak pretty good English although I was able to get by my average French. Like most markets in France it shuts at 13:30 so if you want to take your time browsing try to get down earlier rather than later. The same can be said about buying lunch there. There are maybe two dozen trailers selling lunch fare in between the two covered halls, and when I queued up at 12:30 to get un galette de saucisse (a sausage wrapped in a buckwheat crêpe - a local favourite), I had to wait for a good 20-25 minutes. Sure it was quite nice, but trying to eat this at the same time as hurriedly buying pink garlic and saucisson de canard. You can probably grab similar fare throughout the city with much less waiting. All in all however, a really great place to look round and buy some choice produce.

I frequent this place very often for their free samples, and I finally felt bad about taking so…read moremany free samples that I decided to buy something else. I stopped by 30 minutes before they closed at 7pm on a Wednesday evening, and got their last Mont Blanc (€4,50) to go. WOW. I am so so so happy that I decided on this one instead of another cake that I was looking at. Mont Blanc's are my favorite cake, and this one now ranks 2nd in my list of favorite Mont Blanc's. Let me tell you why: 1. The size is absolutely adorable. I've had other one's (Angelina in Paris, Mr. & Mrs. Renou in Geneva) where there was just TOO much cream (yes, there's such thing as too much cream) that it became overpowering and way too sweet to eat. 2. THEY. USE. AN ALMOND PIE TART. AS. A. BASE. Can we talk about how creative and different that is!? I've had ones that are a sponge cake, macaron, meringue, and sable, but never a whole tart underneath! And this tart was absolutely amazing too - the pie crust wasn't sweet at all which helped balance the sweetness of the chestnut cream & almond paste filling. 3. No meringue, just whipped cream. Chestnuts instead of a chestnut cream inside. 4. Perfect amount of stiff, creamy, sweet chestnut cream on the outside. Everything about this dessert was amazing. It's been a whole 24 hours since I ate it, and it's still all I can think about.

Oh My Biche - cheesecake €4 - super creamy and a bit tart, delicious!

I've been to the Oh My Biche in Columbier twice for brunch, but decided to try the special lunch…read moreitems at the Mail location. It's definitely not as well known and the inside is a lot smaller (only two tables inside) than the original Columbier location, but service is and ambiance are just as great. My friend and I went on a Wednesday at 12pm, and there were only two other parties sitting outside, so we got to snag the inside table. The owner, who I've noticed works at both locations, and a server were the only two workers in the FoH, but both were super sweet and explained to us the menu in English. I got the Mommy's Dwich (€10) and their famous Snickers (€5) and my friend got the Weekly special (White fish in a coconut milk with pumpkin puree and seasonal veggies - €9,50) and the cheesecake (€4). There was a hefty portion of roasted beef on top the open faced sandwich, with a nice hearty gratin sitting between the beef and the perfectly toasted brioche bread. It came with a side of salad and tartar sauce (which I didn't use). The portion, like all plates I've had here, was a little small for the price (and as I've mentioned in my review for the original location, I never leave this place full, but I always leave satisfied with my choices haha). The roast beef didn't have much flavor which I was a little sad about, but the gratin was delicious and creamy, and the brioche was also wonderful. The Snickers was amazing, and I can see why the description underneath is "The Famous One". They really recreated the snickers, but better. The bottom layer is a brownie/chocolate cake, and very nutty peanut butter cream sits on top, encased by milk chocolate with bits of peanuts, topped with a thick whipped cream and peanuts. I tried a bite of my friends cheesecake and it was very creamy and delicious. Wonderful cafe run by wonderful people and always serving amazing food.

When I'm in a certain place for a short amount of time, I hardly ever frequent the same restaurant…read moretwice, because I want to explore my options. Oh My Biche however has ruined that for me, because I've been here twice and am planning to come back a third time, very soon! They have a breakfast, lunch, and brunch menu at the Colmbier location, and just lunch at the Mail location. I wish I could try everything off of every menu! Both times I came was for Sunday brunch at 11am - by 11:20, there's a line out the door so be sure to get here early! Foods & Drinks: Waffle Tower (8 euros): A tower of waffles (3/4 pieces of a whole) topped with an earl grey whipped cream, caramelized almonds, and berries with a side of rich chocolate sauce. I was in COMPLETE. AWE. I was so amazed that a waffle dish could blow me away so much, because I'm #teampancakes all the way. The waffle was crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The earl grey whipped cream was my favorite part. It was super light and not sweet at all, and the aroma of earl grey was so so perfect - I wished I could have just eaten the cream! The rich chocolate sauce gave the dish the sweetness it needed, but because it was a dark chocolate it wasn't overpowering. The caramelized almonds were also plentiful and sweet, and gave the waffles a nice crunch, while the tart berries contrasted the sweetness of the dish. Everything was absolutely amazing, I couldn't believe that for 8 euros, I got one of the best brunch dishes I've had in my life. My only complain is that I never seem to leave full since the portion sizes are small here (but maybe that's just an excuse for me to order two dishes next time...?) Chicken Waffles (12 euros): Half a waffle with three pieces of cajun-style fried chicken topped with half a caramelized banana, spinach, and maple syrup. HOLY HELL. Okay, so I'm not a waffle fan, and I'm definitely NOT a chicken & waffles fan. The chicken in the dishes in America just look so huge, greasy, and fatty that I never wanted to order it. But knowing Oh My Biche, I knew they'd do it well here. and I was right - I don't think I can eat any other chicken & waffles because they've skewed my entire perception of the dish. The chicken isn't your traditional drumstick, but made with a rather sort of corndog/doughnut like batter - soft on the inside and crunchy on the inside, seasoned with a little bit of a kick. It pairs so well with the maple syrup, and the caramelized banana also gives a nice sweetness to it. I asked my server for a side of the earl grey whipped cream (+2 euros) because i loved it so much, and although it was a little pricey, it came with the caramelized almonds that I loved, and it pulled the whole dish together, so #noragrets Matcha Latte (4 euros): This was the most underwhelming thing I've ordered here, just because the matcha flavor was SO subtle - it was overpowered by the milk. But I've come to realize that most non-coffee drinks that I've purchased in France aren't as flavorful as back in Hawaii or Japan, so I don't think my taste is a fair judgement. Service is quick and everyone is very kind. I even saw the owners working on my second Sunday brunch visit, which was very refreshing to see. The ambiance is so adorable, with neon signs, hanging plants, and nice furniture. The workers also speak English, which is a plus.
