Most importantly, Joe was an incredible host! We had rented a car for the weekend to drive from the ferry to Tofino and back, but when we wanted to leave on Sunday after checking out off the hostel, we found out that the wipers weren't working (it was raining a lot). Joe then invited us to stay as long as we had to wait and even called the car rental company to make sure they found a solution so that we could go back. We ended up having a great afternoon sitting in the kitchen, drinking coffee, and chatting with him. He's such a warm and friendly person, I'd recommend this place to everyone who plans to visit Tofino.

The main drawback is the distance from the town centre (a 10 minute walk), but it's only a few steps to a great local coffee place, Shelters Restaurant (a nice seafood restaurant that also has reasonably priced casual fare like burger and pizza for $11-$14) and Jack's Waterfront Pub for a beer with the locals. Given that the hostels in town start from $30 a night, this is a great budget option.

I will never recommend this place... For the following reasons…read more 1. The owner( nick) is very judgemental. Staying at his guesthouse felt like your soffocated. He negatively criticizes the whalers on the point grey saying the whalers are corrupt and don't give money back to clients that cancels. Well in fact it is not true, when I canceled they were happy to assist me and give me no hassle. 2. The guest house have curfew , that the living room needs to be emptied by 11pm and everyone must be extremely quite. 3. If you bring your car, you must put your keys in their common box, which I find very invading in privacy. Did I say "MUST", yes! It's a must to place your car keys at their common box. 4. They only serve waffles every single morning!,, waffled out when I stayed there for 4 days!! 5. The owners helper don't provide food and salary to his helpers which I find very abusing to someone who is in need of accommodation. This guy( the owner) is taking advantage of international students. 6. When I canceled my last night of stay, the owner was extremely mad and told me off. I didn't even confirm my last night of staying there, but he said he have refused customers bec. He was saving my bed space. I find it very strange bec. Check out tie is at 4:30pm and when I told him I'm not staying for additional night, he was madly pissed. 7. The house is so cramed that you have to pass tru the bathrooms in order to get to your bed space, it's discusting, bec he does not allow people to wear house slippers and just before you enter your room, you must pass tru the bathrooms!! Yikes!! 8. The dish cloths are beyond the word disgusting. 9. Don't leave water bottles within the house bec. Somebody will try to put something in there that will make you NAUCIOUS!!!.be superly cautios!!! 10. Lastly the owner is very pretentious portraying himself to be so calm and collected, but his freaking greedy... Ps. When I arrive early he was so annoyed that he told me to come back at 7:30am and he wouldn't let me in..even though I missed my first day of reservation!, So piece of advice to my fellow travellers, no matter how desperate you are finding a hostel in tofino, don't dare to even call nor check this hostel. Nick and Erica have transformed their home into part bed and breakfast/hostel and part home. They live upstairs and there are 2 or 3 private rooms with a lock and private bathrooms, as well as a bedroom with 5 bunks and a communal bathroom for them to share. There is a communal kitchen with fridge and cupboard space allotted for each room - this is a huge money savings! They cook a fresh salmon dinner for guests on Wednesday night for a nominal price ($5 maybe?) and they could not be more gracious about welcoming all travelers into their home. We stayed in a private room so we had the luxury of privacy, with the companionship that you find in a hostel. It was right by the water with a great deck/view and you had full use of the grill and two rental bikes. This is such an amazing find and we highly recommend it to anyone traveling to Tofino (which you should do!).

The whole hostel is beautifully designed and decorated. My only complaint is there are no standing fans or small bedside table fans in the rooms so when the temperature is 32 degrees Celsius the ceiling fan does nothing. I was tempted to sleep outside. I have stayed at many other hostels which have fans not sure why this one doesn't.
