Pretty rad place with the best selection of boards in North County. Now I'm no expert on this whole sport of surfing, but I don't pretend to be, so I don't get shamed in there. My fiance seems to know the sport, so he also doesn't get shamed in there. Doesn't hurt that he buys a board, but I don't think that really impacts the level of service he receives. That's not to say you should go in there and expect to be treated like you're a Nordstrom's shopper. You're not. You're a skate/surf shopper, and you'll be generally ignored until you start asking questions. They like to leave folks to look around on their own, and I'd say that's appreciated in this world. But if you have questions, they'll answer them right quick. Like I said, I'm no expert. But my fiance who is a regular surfer likes them a whole lot and I always liked being in the store with him. These guys have an awesome selection of new boards...biggest you'll find probably. I was in the market for a used board and their selection isn't bad at all. One older guy who worked at the shop was really really helpful and took a ton of time to explain the board selection to me and give me info. Their selection is rad. Some of the younger guys at the shop aren't super friendly which is why I'm giving the shop a 4 star rating...they're not rude, but they're not very helpful. I was there 2 times in two days and both times the younger guys weren't really helpful...kind of pointed me in a direction but didn't offer to help at all. read more

I bought a small boogie board for my son from them for roughly $60.00 about a month ago. I got my first boogie board when I was young and I've had it ever since. So it was with a sense of occasion that we went boogie boarding with his new one and my nearly 40 year old one. To my horror, after three days, the leash on my son's board snapped- I saw it happen and there was no force exerted that justified a break. Upon examination, the material was very brittle. I was dismayed. Surf Ride didn't make the board or leash. But they did sell it to me, and something brand new breaking like that leaves a bad taste in your mouth. Spending the time just to take it back would just compound the inconvenience, and I knew I'd be back there to buy a new 3/2 for myself in about a month. Given that I had bought an 8' Walden Mega Magic for approximately $1000.00 roughly 6 months ago and many other things besides, I figured tossing in a new leash as a gesture of good will would be an easy way for them to set things right. So, yesterday, still with the memory of the broken leash grating, but confident Surf Ride would make it right, I picked out a wetsuit for my son ($64.00), and a $240.00 Rip Curl E-bomb for myself (on sale, usually $299.00). As I walked to the register with $300.00 in purchases in hand I said to the (perfectly polite and efficient) sales person that I'm going to ask that a leash be thrown in to make up for the one that broke. I told him what happened, pointed out that I had $300.00 purchases in hand, and had bought the 8' $1000.00 board not long ago. The salesperson said "no". I asked him to ask the manager. He did, and when he returned he said she said "no", but she would sell me a new one for 10% off. This really put me off. It was not the cost of the leash, it was the principal. They sold me an apparently defective leash, they had taken a lot of money from me in the past, and were about to get some more, yet this apparently counted for nothing with them. They of course are under no obligation to give me a replacement leash, but I'm under no obligation to buy anything from them. So I left. read more

I bought a wetsuit there and a little tiny piece broke off the strap. Instead of helping me find a replacement for the part, they exchange the wetsuit and I was allowed to get a upgrade and pay the difference. They are the best and went above and beyond. Love this shop! read more

I've purchased several boards from Surf Ride. I recently ordered a new board from Surf Ride. Tom was a great help over the phone. Ended up ordering a Firewire Dominator. Tom arranged to have the board shipped to a hotel I was staying at in Malibu. Unfortunately Tom forgot to put the fins in the shipping box (I'm sure he wasn't the one who packed the box). Unfortunately I was unable to surf the board on my birthday trip. I reached out to Tom and let him know the fins were not included in the shipment. He apologized and mailed them out with a couple hats. Definitely a Surf Ride fan! read more

I struggled between 1 and 2 stars, but after my son had to wait 5 months for a custom surfboard that ended up not being very custom, 1 star is more appropriate. We ordered it on May 2nd and picked it up on Oct 3rd. Missed the summer. They called about 3 months ago saying it was ready, but when my wife and son arrived it wasn't. When we picked it up yesterday, Surf Ride blamed it all on Super (the vendor) and took no responsibility at all. They gave us a small discount ($50) on a $600 board...and it didn't have the graphics my son ordered...so you really can't even tell that it's a custom board. Most businesses will take responsibility for items sold in their store, not here. read more

I used to work at Surf Ride and I love the place. I do understand how some people can have bad reviews about this place because thats bound to happen anywhere. I will tell you that the managing staff does everything they can to help you out with wetsuit repairs and board repairs and returns. I have witnessed plenty of times that Surf Ride has lost money on deals because they did not feel the product performed as well as it should have for the customer. Unfortunately this can not always be the case and I am not saying you can buy a new board, ride it for a week and then exchange it for another one. I am saying they will do their best to get you into a different board with the least amount of money. Anyway, the staff all loves the surf culture and we had a lot of regular clients. Unfortunately sometimes the staff gets so busy helping and talking with the regulars that they lose track of helping other people. If you find yourself in their and lacking help, please do me a favor and just ask someone to help you out and see the great customer service. The staff is pretty diverse when it comes to their personal surfing style so you might get someone who is a total ripper and then you might get someone like me, who knows a lot about the equipment except how to perform well on it. Anyway, the only reason I give them (us) a 4 instead of 5 is because I know there are times we get too wrapped up in talking with the regular customers. After I got their they all had no clue and back tracked what they had told me. Super frustrated, should have known better. I will go to a real local surf shop from now on. Recently, I was in the market for a new full wetsuit, and checked out every big and small surf shop from Oceanside to Solana Beach. As a former Oceanside resident, I had mixed feelings about patronizing a bigger store like Surf Ride, as I like giving my business to smaller, mom and pop surf shops. In this case, I needed a suit fast and nobody else had one in my size, so I took the plunge and checked out Surf Ride after surfing Fletcher Cove one rainy morning. I found the wetsuit prices to be competitive with online and offline prices, and the staff was very friendly and helpful with my questions on wetsuit brands, suit thicknesses, and other differences; her name escapes me, but the college-aged brunette girl working in the wetsuit dept was unbelievably nice and super-friendly to myself and other customers in the store that morning! After trying on several suits, I went with an intro-level Rip Curl "Dawn Patrol" model, and am so far pleased with the fit, performance, and look of the wetsuit. Surf Ride was kind of a case of "not judging a book by it's cover", as it wasn't as expensive, tourist-y or surf-clothing and surf-image centric as I thought they were. While they do cater to that clientele, they still have the goods to meet the average surfer's needs. As far as wetsuit purchases go, I'd buy again! read more

I was checking out a brand new surf board + leash + set of fins and left without buying it because of the cashier very rude attitude about a credit card issue in their machine. She didn't want to talk when I asked to try it again so she called the manager Travis who was even more rude. I had just used my CC less than a hour ago.
