Santiago , Chile
I'm staying near a Lider Express ( Walmart ) store that provides for most of your needs whether food, clothing , furniture , products for the home, etc.
I usually just grocery shop there for chicken , sausages , salami , cheese , bread , Pepsi-Cola, Lipton Tea, sweets , etc.
The prices are affordable , comparable to Walmart prices in the USA.
They also have a pharmacy and over the counter items such as tooth brushes , minor analgesic , band aids , etc. The place is usually crowded with shoppers filling their carts with basic necessities.
It is customary in Chile to TIP the bagger for bagging your groceries. If you have less than ten items you can enter the Express Line and avoid paying the tip.
But ... in the Express line you grab the hand held electric scanner and scan your items via the bar code. It will spit out a ticket with the cost of your purchases. Hand that ticket to the cashier and she will ring you up. Help yourself to some plastic bags next to the scanner and bag your own groceries and avoid leaving a tip. Collect your change and off you go ...
If you are not a citizen of Chile you will not have a Chilean I. D. Card "Rut"
Therefore , when making your purchase be sure to inform the cashier that you have no "Rut". (No tengo Rut).
p. s. Don't worry about standing in the regular check out line where a tip is expected by the grocery bagger. The tip is usually 100 or 200 pesos, or less.
That would be the equivalent of 25 or 30 cents. I only mention the express lane if in a hurry and you have less than 11 items. read more
