I got in and out in less than 10 minutes, which is likely the shortest time I've ever spent in Monoprix. The women's department appeared disheveled so I didn't seriously look for any clothes. While the hair/makeup/lotion are was incredibly well organized and stocked, I found their selection limiting. However, they nearly have an entire aisle of facial tissues! Probably wouldn't go back but I did get what I needed.

Manor is a department store of similar style/quality as Macy's (USA) or John Lewis (UK) BUT in the basement there is a grocery store/food hall that is simply amazing!! What's most amazing is it really can be your everyday place to shop - but in addition to your onions, potatoes, juice, milk, flour, cleaning supplies..... there is also an astounding selection of cheeses, meats, poultry, fish, fresh bakery for breads and cakes and a small café with pizzas, salads, stir-fry's (a bigger café is on the top floor). There is a good selection of organic produce (labelled BIO), and most of the fruit and veg are local and very seasonal. In the US and UK I got used to having access to pretty much anything at any time of the year, so the seasonality was a bit strange at first but now I look forward to changes in produce as the year progresses. Besides the cheese.... I mean food, there is a good selection of accessories (I LOVE tights and nearly passed out when I saw the selection), clothing for all the family, beautiful home goods, and a good selection of electronics. (Weirdly, this is my second time Yelping a Galeries Lafayette solely because of its bathroom.) My mom took my son to pee while I hung out downstairs with his brother, a loopy three-year-old on vacation mode and California time. He was briefly asleep in his stroller when we parted with the bathroom crew, but awake and ready to party by the time I saw them get on the escalator. I tried to admire the Jerome Dreyfuss bags and other nice merchandise set out on the department store's main floor, but mostly I kept my child from running into people while he danced. The place was mobbed during Christmas season, and the line for the bathroom was apparently ludicrous, long and slow-moving. I was counting the minutes and it felt like we were waiting for hours. Anyway, if you want to shop at a big department store in Strasbourg, I'm sure Galeries Lafayette is the place to go. If all you need is a bathroom, perhaps there are better options.

So my Boss drove me into town and being that I've never bought a winter coat before I decided to let me do the leading and followed him up to the thrid floor of this store. The selection here is much better then the other big department store in town (I think it starts with a K??) and after trying on many coats I found a gorgeous warm Jacket that doesn't make me look like a michillen man and has a great little furry hood that makes Germans come up to me in the street and ask if I'm an Eskimo :-) with my slitty eyes and black straight fringe (You'd think they'd never seen anyone of Asian background in this part of the country before...heh) I'm Happy and Warm and thats all I can ask for :)

This chain is famous in The Netherlands and according to me one of its best export products ;) You can find the famous Dutch 'stroopwafels' (wafers with caramel) at the entrance... Another typical Dutch treat for the last few months of the year is 'pepernoten'... Small round biscuit balls with spices (cinnamon) - sometimes covered with chocolate or other flavours.. This afternoon I had the chance to try a few of those... Yummy! :) This shop sells savoury snacks as well: cheese balls, crisps, tortilla chips, etc. For very good prices :) I read that this Hema is the biggest in France with a surface of almost 700m2. It's located in the main shopping district of Mulhouse and easily reachable by foot from Mulhouse-Ville train station. The shop staff was very friendly. I'll become a regular of this place! :)
