I didn't know a hot dog could be so good, and I've had many a hot dog. Burgers are good too, but the dogs are the highlight. A local staple, you can find the place packed with people in the know. Very friendly chefs. A throwback to the 50s.

Always a great place to visit when in the area. Prices were up to $7 a dog which, even I must admit, is a little high to make the visit more often. Fries are always a hit.

Oops the last bite of the "Californian" with chili and chopped onions.

What a great spot.. picked from a "hot dog near me" app. The menu is on the board. Dogs, burgers and chicken. All cooked to order and served quickly. Not much more than the kitchen and a dozen stools, but the rolls held the topped dogs and "popped" when you bit into the dog. DELICIOUS is all I can say. We'll be back on our way through

I had their chicken sandwich and it is soooo good! Dripping with mayo and/or honey mustard, lettuce, onion and tomato. The bread is fresh and a great compliment! I definitely recommend you give it a try!

Discovered Super Duper Weenie while I was doing my undergraduate degree at Sacred Heart. I am not a big hot dog fan whatsoever but their entire menu is fantastic. Whenever I am in the area I try to stop by for a quick snack, which I highly recommended as you will never be disappointed. Service is fast and friendly, the staff are very personable and make your experience feel like you are eating right at home with family. We ordered the New Englander, Georgia Red Hot, and large fries to share. I got a grilled cheese as well and a grape soda. The hot dogs are always fresh and the toppings are what make each one so delicious. The Georgia red hot had the perfect amount of kick to it. Fries are perfectly crunchy and crisp with the right amount of salt. The only complaint I ever have is the limited and very tight parking but it is well worth it for the food here.

Amazing hot dogs but definitely high-end gourmet prices now. 7.00 per specialty dog. I was a bit disappointed in the coleslaw today. Not like I remember it. Will not order my fav slaw dog again My chili dog was as good as ever.

The best dog on our trek, and worth a try Touring around Connecticut, trying some of the best hot dogs in the state. This stop came up as #4 on our trek, and it was the best dog of them all. The hot dog was split and grilled, the toppings were fresh and varied. One of the things we noted is that the Cincinnatian dog and the dixie dog didn't use the same chili. The dixie dog was thicker and spicier, which worked well with the creamy and cool coleslaw. Also the georgia hot was spicy but not overbearingly so. Meanwhile the Cincinnatian dog had a looser, chipped style chili. with the crisp onions and mound of cheddar cheese, lead to a very savory chili cheese dog bite. Everything was doled up fresh and handled expertly. The location isn't much to look at from the outside nor the inside. it's very much a hot dog shack, but it's clean and not worn down. The dogs coming out of this kitchen are very tasty though. Yes, this place did get some Food Network clout. But it does have its merit. It had the best overall hot dog, fresh toppings, was treated well and did everything right. This spot is worth the trek!

Man, these guys are the best! They were the original craft foodies before it was cool. Before craft beer and trends to glamorize unsexy foods like pizza and cupcakes and ramen, these guys were here! In the same location, producing the same quality and prideful results! Don't ever change guys!

I was happily greeted by the Super Duper Weenie food truck at work last week! Loved the hot dog, burger, and grilled chicken options! Fries were a little too crunchy but had good flavor.

Classic roadside American joint. Super tasty food, excellent service. Hot dogs were delicious, chicken fingers were also awesome. Must visit when in the area!!

Super Duper Weenie ("SDW") was the first CT hot dog place that would get me psyched up for visits. I love the dogs and the house made toppings. I loved the house cut thin French Fries. SDW is one of the CT places featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, and I don't think there's too many of those. Since I live more than an hour away, most of my visits have been limited to times when I was driving along 95 (SDW is pretty close to the exit) around a meal time. But I've certainly made special visits too. Last weekend, I had plans to check out a Fairfield bakery for my Food Blog, and I knew that meant my first SDW visit in a long time. If I hadn't had other food plans, I probably would have ordered two completely different dogs and fries. Since I had other plans, I just ordered the Cincinnatian hot dog and the smallest side of fries. I am from Ohio and lived there for over 20 years. I venture to say that among CT residents, I am in the Top .5 percentile for Cincinnati style chili dogs consumed in Ohio. I have never had a Cincinnati style chili dog better than SDW's. They get the flavor notes (usually including things such as cocoa, cinnamon, Allspice) of the chili correct, and it's higher quality chili. The SDW dog, which is split and grilled, is much better than the popular Ohio places. I'm not sure that SDW discloses the maker of their dog. I very quickly researched it and didn't see an answer. SDW also nails the mild shredded cheese appearance and volume (substantial). The bun is right on too. I love this dog. For YEARS, I would tell people that SDW had some of the best fries in CT. I suspect that's still true on SDW's best days. On my recent visit however, they weren't quite as done as I like or remember. They were good. But not great. I'd be surprised if they're not better next time. Super Duper Weenie is currently one of my three favorite hot dogs places in CT. I'm glad to see they're still doing things at a high level. Five Stars

Ask the Community - Super Duper Weenie

    Who makes the hotdogs?

Kind of a trick question - they're manufactured by Hummel Brothers but all of their food is made fresh to order, including the fries, and their techniques, ingredients & results are uniquely awesome!

Are the hotdogs beef or pork?

They are a blend of beef and pork and they are delicious!!

Before this weekend, I had been once before years ago, and didn't really connect with the hot dogs in the way that others must. When I unexpectedly drove by this weekend and saw they were open, I had to try again. While the hot dog was good (not great or even very good), I continue to be underwhelmed relative to the expectations set by others and I found the experience unnecessarily inefficient and frustrating. When I arrived at 11:40 am, there was no line to order, 2 people were waiting for prior orders in the narrow front room where you order, and there were four people sitting in the narrow dining area who seemed to have their food already. I saw at least 4 different people working, which seemed adequate for the number of customers. I ordered at 11:41. I asked if they make any of their own toppings and I was told they make their own hot relish, but none of the other toppings. So I ordered one hot dog with yellow mustard, and the house red hot relish. The other available toppings, included chili, cheese, kraut, onions, sweet relish, bacon, jalapenos, mayo and dill pickle chips. I didn't get my hot dog until 12:01. So 20 minutes later. In those 20 minutes, they handed out a couple of average looking phone in orders. So it wasn't like they were doing a huge phone-in takeout business either. One of the two people who ordered ahead of me finally said "I have to go. I need a refund." They said they were completing his order so he ended up waiting a couple more minutes. I was equally frustrated with the inability of four people to accomplish so little in 20 minutes. I was there long enough to read a story they have on the wall about how people will wait "20 minutes for the real thing". So it actually seems to be a source of pride that they can take 20 minutes to fill your order, because you will like the food that much. I've been to many of the best loved CT hot dog places. I have had my hot dog within 5 minutes from some of those paces. I have never waited longer than 10 minutes for a single hot dog, even when there were twice as many customers. Even when the other hot dog places have many more topping options and they actually make some of those toppings in house. 20 minutes for a single hot dog with simple toppings is unacceptable during non-busy periods, and should be embarrassing, rather than an apparent source of pride. I could get over 20 minutes for a best in CT level hot dog. My hot dog was not near that level. Rawley's uses a standard bun length Hummel hot dog. Deep frying the dog is supposed to make it snappy. My dog was not snappy. My teeth pierced the dog, with very little resistance. I'm not a Hummel guy, but the flavor was fine. The hot relish was pretty good. It did not pop relative to the topping options of my favorite CT hot dog shops. The butter-grilled bun is a highlight, however. It's probably one of the best hot dog buns in CT. I don't live near Fairfield. I can't see returning to Rawley's. Especially, given that one of the best CT hot dog spots is also in Fairfield, and another is up the road a bit in Milford. 3 Stars for the whole experience. 3.75 Stars for the hot dog.

I found the hot dog curtains adorable. Service was quick. They turned over the few tables quickly. Prices were reasonable. I'd visit again.

This place is very affluent, so there's lots of shopping opportunities in this area. tucked in the parking lot of one of these places is a large duplex-sized place called Jakes, which has a ton of good press online. We go in, and the place is somewhat dim. The place is small but very dark. It kind of reminds me of a collectables shop in terms of the ambiance. Functional, but not very inviting. The menu has pretty much all hot dogs, and lots of them. The sheer amount of unique dogs is impressive. This being one of our later stops in our trek, we opted for a chicken teriyaki dog and a Seattle dog for comparisons. The food comes out quick, we take pics and dig in. First off, the hot dog to bun ratio was way off. the hot dogs were way too small for the bun, which was very evident with the Seattle dog. So you would get lots of bread with a little bit of dog on each bite. Second, the hot dogs were actually very salty. This usually has no real bearing on the dish, since I do like my salt. The problem being that the two hot dogs we got had high salt condiments on them (bacon and chicken teriyaki). the combo of salt on salt just lead to some very salty bites. The dogs themselves were prepared properly. I do enjoy the split and grill method of dog cooking. but there was a major lack of balance with the two we got. If we got hot dogs that had other non-salty ingredients, then these dogs would be good. but as prepared, they were a little off. It's an option if you want a hot dog, I would probably avoid the two that we got unless you like salty dogs.

They also have breakfast, burgers, wings, sandwiches and fried seafood etc. The first thing you should know is Merritt Canteen is one of the very few CT places to score a Guy Fieri Diners Drive Inns & Dives visit. That clearly means something. The atmosphere was clean and classic. Service was friendly and efficient. I believe MC uses Hummel Hot Dogs, which is a quality dog. It was well cooked. The bun was fresh. The presumably American Cheese slice was melted over the top of my chili cheese dog. This part was way above average. Which brings me to the chili sauce. I don't have the recipe for this sauce. So I'm giving you my impression and not stating facts. The sauce, tastes like a thick meat gravy, with a generous amount of hot pepper sauce such as Tabasco added. There wasn't really a noticeable meat component. Maybe that gets electrically blended into the sauce. I don't know, but I didn't get a classic ground beef vibe here. I understand some people love this sauce. I suspect those same people are big Tabasco fans and liberally add it to most of their meals. Me, I'm one and done with the chili sauce. I like nuanced spice. This was not that. I did finish the dog, but my resolve wavered. It's hard to discount the impact of the chili sauce in scoring this review because it was the dominant force of the chili dog. But the truth is, the dog, melted cheese, bun, service, and atmosphere were all good. So I'll score this a 3.5 and round up to 4 Stars.
