My room was near the exit and all I heard was the slamming of the door all night. Also many people sitting by the entrance smoking and being a bit loud. I was not well rested. The breakfast was waffles, oatmeal or a frozen sandwich. The rest of the hotel was clean. If you stay, do not get a room near any exits. Also, there were no elevators.

I thought the bed and pillows were pretty comfortable but my wife didn't agree. The breakfast was very good and had a good selection. Now for the bad, the heating system was super loud and woke me up every time it kicked in. I know earlier I said that the place was clean, and I stand by that, but we did see one thing that was pretty gross. Our room window was right above the awning for the front entry and when we were getting ready to leave I noticed there was a badly decomposing either huge mouse or small rat right outside our window. I am not one of those people that fools themselves and thinks that most hotels don't have rodents, but when I told the guy at the front desk I didn't get an apology or anything. All he said was, "Ewwww, thanks for letting me know." Seriously?? All that being said is we will probably be back, but only due to lack of options.

We stayed one night in the Cabin Life rental. Overall, the experience was enjoyable. Below are the…read morepros and cons of our experience. Pros 1. The cabin was beautiful and very clean, and the surrounding scenery is gorgeous. 3. The jetted soaking tub in the bedroom was wonderfully relaxing - a highlight of the stay. 4. Check in and check out were hassle free, and as other reviewers have mentioned, we never even saw our hosts during the visit. 5. Jill was responsive to our questions and was able to recommend a nearby area for a scenic walk. Cons 1. The website describes the cabins as private and secluded; however the owner's residence and cabins are all within 100 yards of each other, so the feeling of privacy was limited to the interior of our cabin. Cabin Life is also quite close to the road, so traffic noise could be heard even while inside. 2. The website advertises a "continental deluxe breakfast" delivered to the door of Cabin Life each morning by "the breakfast fairy". While the breakfast fairy did exist, and delivered on time, we did not feel that the contents of one small fruit tart, 2 banana muffins, and a scant palm-full of raspberries were up to par with our expectations from the website description. We chose to dine at the Country Kitchen in Platteville instead, which had good food and pleasant service. 3. Hair conditioner was not included with the bath products provided, which resulted in our evening being interrupted by an unplanned half hour round trip to the Platteville drug store.

This was just a quick "get-a-way" to chase another fine Wisconsin Supper Club listed in our Wisconsin Supper Club book by Ron Faiola. The quaint accommodations at Walnut Ridge caught us off guard - honestly we didn't expect something this charming, quietly tucked in the rolling hills north of the University of Wisconsin Platteville and only 90 minute drive from our home. We are not B & B people, however, Walnut Ridge is not your normal "communal" accommodations - "Back Again" is an 1100 square foot cabin, well appointed - privately and quietly welcoming it's visitors from nearby tourist locations like Galena,Dubuque, Platteville, Prairie du Chien, Madison, Spring Green, Mineral Point, Dodgeville. "Back Again" is a respite for the weary traveler and casual guests - radiant floor heat, fireplace, stocked kitchen, whirlpool tub - neatly finished in an expertly restored 1800's log cabin - set in an iconic, rural, Wisconsin wooded lot of 5.5 acres. Check in and check out was unobtrusive - we never saw our hosts. Drive in, kick off your shoes, mix an Old Fashioned, and run yourself a warm, relaxing soak. Ah, even a bathrobe waiting for you in the sun room. Enjoy - we did.

Business travel kind of sucks. It sucks more when you have to stay in hotels like this one. And not…read moreby choice. I was supposed to stay at the nice, clean Country Inn & Suites down the street, but of course they overbooked me. The only hotel in town with rooms available was the Governor Dodge. Quite honestly, the front desk gal at the Country Inn & Suites looked like she felt sorry for sending me over there. Rightfully so, yo. The Governor Dodge is the pits. It most closely resembles a modern day Bates Motel. Well, if you consider "modern" to be a hotel that obviously hasn't been remodeled in the past 20 years. My room was absolutely tiny, dark, hot and smelled kind of like hamburger fat. The TV was super old school and maybe 10 inches, tops. A sleep function on that sucker would have been helpful to drown out the noise. Noise? In small town? Why yes! I had to open the window because the hamburger fat smell was overwhelming, but there was some kind of farming equipment next door that was super loud. So then I shut the window and turned on the A/C (one of those strip thingies) that rattled even more loudly than the farm equipment. And leaked. The open window won. The bathroom door looked like plywood, the shower head was about as high as my neck, which made washing my hair a real treat this morning and the sockets gave me a nice shock when I plugged in my blow dryer. Yes, I looked GORGEOUS today at my work meeting. When I checked out, I noticed that the complimentary breakfast, which was laid out on a card table in the lobby, consisted of 3 greasy muffins and a sad looking glazed donut. No thanks. I'd rather just eat the pretzels I didn't finish last night for breakfast. Ugh. This place sucks. Interesting side note: I found out from a local that the Governor Dodge is currently in foreclosure. This does not surprise me.
