Post-shutdown, this place has pivoted to being a tiny gourmet grocery store that happens to have a coffee counter that also serves a handful of hot food items. I know that a lot of small restaurants have been selling pantry items to help them get by, but this place has switched to peddling $12 pints of ice cream and $6 cans of soup. I really hope that as things become vaguely more normal they return to their original identity. This has become my Sunday spot to meet with friends to discuss graduate studies. The wifi is wonderful, the atmosphere is kind of dark, and the staff are polite. We did try to sneak in a cake last week and it did not work (however, the staff was beyond happy to just tell us to hide it). As of cocktails, they are all $11 and differ in size and strength. This place is absolutely ridiculous. I moved to the area about a year ago and always passed by the place, until yesterday. My friend & I wanted to grab brunch, so I suggested checking out Sunrise/Sunset since it's down the street. When we walk in, literally no one greets us. We eventually made awkward eye contact with an employee at the bar, who then hands us a menu. After being handed the menu, we place our orders (while standing, mind you) and then we're told to take a seat. After receiving our orders, I finished my first drink and wanted another, so I asked the employee who brought food to our table if I could have a refill. She remarks, "...sure, I'll tell the bar". Then after nearly 10 minutes go by, the bar yells "drink ready", and I realize that I have to interrupt both my meal and conversation to go grab my drink from the bar. Long story short, I will never go back to this place, and I urge anyone looking for a positive brunch experience to avoid this place. As a POC, I also completely felt unwelcomed and uninvited, so I echo the voices of many others who stated such on their reviews; however, in general - the way this place operates sucks. Hipster Racism ruined this spot for me. Been here plenty of times with my then-girlfriend who is Chinese and White. Went there by myself for the first time and was treated pretty badly. - I came in with my dog, mind you there are always dogs at the restaurant, check the restaurant's location story on Instagram on any day and you will see a bunch of them. Right out of the gate the chef decides to tell me that there are no dogs allowed. Excuse me, he didn't tell me, he addressed a white woman who just happened to be standing next to me, even though I was clearly holding the dog's leash. When she told him we weren't together he then decided that I was worthy of his attention and told me dogs were not allowed in the restaurant. I told him I see dogs there every time I come, he said I could sit in the back, and order from there. - Head to the back, no one comes out to take my order so I go to order at the bar. There happens to be a group of black and puerto-rican dudes in the back at the same time, the bartender asks me if I want my food and drinks on their tab. I tell her no, we're not together get my order and head to the back. - On my way out, as I'm trying to close up, for some reason none of my cards are going through, I'm guessing that the manual entry system they use either wasn't working, or the card numbers weren't being entered correctly. The bartender comes back after trying to manually enter the third card and asks "well can't your friends just front you the money?" I tell her again, that we're not together, we didn't arrive together, we're not sitting together and we didn't order together, we just happen to be the only people of colour at the restaurant. Sunrise / Sunset definitely caters to that "cozy hipster nook" aesthetic - and I'm not gonna lie, they do it very well. The place is small but feels very open with big windows slowly spilling in sun, a wraparound bar with wood accents with a DJ set up in the corner, and clean white surfaces with slashes of pastel accents. The brunch menu is short and sweet - they don't fuss around with super complicated dishes or extensive lists of entrees and sides. The food seems to focus on healthy but comforting dishes with a slight twist. If I'm paying $9 for a piece of avocado toast with eggs it better be a goddamn PERFECT of avocado toast with eggs. And lo and behold, I was not disappointed. My sunny side up eggs were cooked exactly the way I wanted and the toast was arranged beautifully on my plate with root veggies and pepitas. Other hits from the menu were the Salmon Tartine and the Brioche French Toast - all beautifully made with quality ingredients. Everyone seems to love the bartender - Sarah - and I totally see why. She was super attentive and sweet the entire time with a wry, slightly self- deprecating humor. She also let me use her IPhone charger when mine died - which gave her extra bonus points in my book. Do yourself a favor - get the Beet Bloody Mary. It is a work of art - the beet juice and pickled veggies plus that spicy kick at the end was phenomenal and something I would have never thought to create. And it's $7 which is pretty fucking reasonable for a Bloody in NY. If I lived in the Bushwick area, I could see Sunrise Sunset becoming a go-to brunch spot for me. I wanted to like this place more since it's only a half a block away from my apartment but have never been blown away on any of my visits. My wife and I have been here a couple of times for pastries and coffee on a lazy weekend morning and even tried a proper meal from their very limited menu on another occasion. This cafe was a breath of life this morning. We rolled out of bed after a long day of drinking on the beach needing some (slightly hungover) nourishment. The accommodation here during COVID is easy and welcoming. I got the sunrise breakfast sandwich with pickled onions and sausage. The balance of flavor and FRESH ingredients in this breakfast sandwich is phenomenal and filling. Their multigrain bread is crisp and delicious. I'd also give their cold brew a solid 5 stars as well. Pros: + Bright and airy during the day; cozy and "hip" at night + The Green Dream, a fantastic summer cocktail. The main mixer is cucumber juice, so it's extraordinarily refreshing and unexpectedly "light" for a cocktail. It comes in a huge glass and is garnished with a cucumber slice and a sprig of fresh thyme. Amazing. $11 + Seasonal cocktail menu, but they show and continue to serve the previous season's specialties (in case you want a cozy whiskey drink in the middle of July). All are around $11-12. + Happy Hour every M-F from 5-8. If I remember correctly, it's $1 off well drinks (which are normally $6) and draft beer. + During the day, it's a nice little cafe with outlets everywherrrrre. + Espresso is cheap! + Music is sometimes played off a record player. Most nights it is the perfect volume. Only once did I find it too loud. + Across from laundromat. :D + Great workspace at all hours of the day! Even at night, this place hosts multiple people doing work on laptops (accompanied with a glass of wine, or in my case, the Green Dream).
