We came here for dinner on a Saturday night. I ordered a cup of miso soup and hibachi chicken with fried rice and vegetables. Our server was very polite and quick to bring out drinks and food. I had high hopes for the miso soup, but it was so salty I could barely eat half. It did come out piping hot, which I appreciated. The hibachi chicken and vegetables was a huge portion. I ended up taking home half. The rice was a little a crunchy, but the chicken and vegetables were cooked perfectly. The restaurant was clean and dimly lit. This was my first time trying Sumo, and unfortunately it will probably be my last. I had heard good things from people I know, so I went in expecting a solid Chinese and/or Japanese dining experience with a nice atmosphere. After being seated, one of the first things I noticed was the condition of the dining area there was visible dust and even some spider webs on the decorations, which immediately hurt the overall impression of mine with this restaurant. The restaurant also wasn't busy at all (only a few groups dining), so it felt a bit plain. Looking over the menu, it felt pretty repetitive and continuative, with many dishes being slight variations of the same thing just with different proteins. Prices also seemed a bit high for what was offered. Another thing that surprised me was that a lot of the menu didn't really feel like traditional Chinese or Japanese food, with several steak-heavy options. When the food came out, I unfortunately found a strand of hair in my meal, which I did not enjoy being in my food. Aside from that, the food itself was just okay, nothing terrible. Definitely not something I'd come back for. Overall, this was a disappointing experience between the cleanliness issues, menu quality, and food. I used to live by here and go here a lot, first things first, when it comes to hibachi, portions are ginormous, we're talking bigger than your average dinner plate. I would suggest getting the noodles with that hibachi (it's worth it) . The inside is pretty big, and the ambiance is solid. It's a dark place, very few lights (not like you can't see, just dim) I like it personally, it feels cool. Best thing them have is probably the lunch sushi specials, which I got all the time. Those end at three (I think) and come with two rolls and soup for $12. The service is also good, the food is served fairly quick, and you get a view of the kitchen from where you sit. I think the owner (or maybe the chef or something) came up to me my first time there and asked me how the food was, so that's a plus. We have visited a few times specifically for sushi rolls. atumbled on their special prices during happy hour and all day Sundays where they discount certain rolls up to 50% off. the sushi rolls are on point and a grwat deal when on special. Hibachi is sub par if you have been to a good hibachi place before. the service is AWFUL. you will be greeted and serv d by staff who make you feel like you are putting them out in some way. our last visit our soda was flat and when we mentioned it to the waiter his response was "i can't do anything about how the pop tastes". I mean I've never been a waiter/waitress before but I imagine offering a new/different drink would have been a good place to start‍ I had to go to bar and have them replace it. the poor service and less than warm welcome is consisten. maybe ordering take out would be a better experience. read more

Guess who's back...back again!! Sumo's dining room is open again!! Woohooh! John is ready and waiting to greet you as you enjoy your dining experience. I ordered my usual of of Tiger Roll which had a little kick from the spicy mayo on top. Today I even added Kani (crab...I know very basic...) and Tuna sashimi just for a little extra. Hubs got his usual Pink Lady Roll but went off script adding the Snow White Roll. The sushi does not disappoint! EVER!!! The servers were on point making sure we were treated well. I was in town for an event and we ordered lunch from Sumo. It was pretty much OK. I really enjoyed the Garden tuna. There were big chunks of fish, avocado, and mango with some julienned cucumber at the bottom. It was a nice sized appetizer portion, but not enough for an entree. I had planned to round it out with the Avocado salad. This was a large box full of iceberg lettuce, a few shredded carrots, and about half an avocado, thinly sliced and nicely arranged on top. The avocado was very fresh and ripe, but the combination was mediocre. One of my friends did not eat her full meal, so she shared the hibachi chicken with me later. By the time I got to it, it was cold (on our end, not theirs), but it was kind of bland and dry. I was pretty hungry, so I ate a decent amount, but it was nothing outstanding. I might review the menu more thoroughly if I were to return and find something else interesting on the sushi menu, but the salad was not impressive and the hibachi lunch OK. read more

I stopped in for a late lunch and sat at the sushi bar. There weren't many people, so got served right away. The lunch hitbatchi portion of steak and shrimp was large for the $10 price. Steak was a bit overdone (asked for medium) and dish over all a little too salty, but tasty nonetheless. It also came with soup or salad and I chose salad. I also got a California roll, which was good, but nothing special. Overall, good food, good service, average decor. Not many options for sushi in this town, but this place is ok. read more

The experience was cool & price not bad, the whole "all you can eat" sans actual buffet is a big selling point..BUT...I will choose Sumo over Sushi Bomb any day!!! When we came here, it was a great experience... but it was a bit too long of a wait, the people working here made us a little too confused and stressed, and we had to get the server's attention every single time just to ask for most basic things (like a fork, napkins, drinks, food, etc.). Hands down the best sushi I've ever had. Now, I will say that I've only had sushi from restaurants in the tri-state area (including Pittsburgh and Columbus). But my goodness the fish here was amazing. My husband and I did the love boat for two. The fish was fresh, not frozen. The salmon (my husband's favorite sashimi) was buttery and so flavorful. My favorite sashimi is white tuna and I was blown away; it pretty much melts in your mouth. Everything was very high quality and absolutely delicious. We picked the Edison roll for our special roll and loved it. I ordered two pieces of mackerel sushi and it was delicious as well. On top of the amazing sushi and sashimi, the waitress and sushi chef were extremely friendly and attentive. And, to further enhance our evening, we had the pleasure of talking the owner who was warm and humble. We felt like everyone wanted us to have a great dining experience. In town for business and ordered sushi at this restaurant through Door Dash on 10/24 early evening. I ordered 3 rolls and requested extra soy sauce for each roll. When the order got delivered no soy sauce were in the bag. I called this place to ask what happened with the soy sauce and an incredibly rude and combative female tried to blame it on the Door Dash driver then started raising her voice, said nothing could be done, then hung up. I called back and gave the manager an earful over this. How this restaurant even employs such a trashy filthy mouth person is astonishing. read more

Never has a dining experience failed so exquisitely. Right out of the gate, the ambiance leaves everything to be desired. The arrangement of their cheap banquet style tables and chairs is reminiscent of a high school cafeteria. The decor is loosely Asian themed, but throws some curveballs at you like the deer antlers over the bar, or the singular painting randomly hung on one of the walls (fairly certain it hides a hole in the dry wall). My wife and I ordered two beers and were brought filthy glasses to pour them into. All this could of course been overlooked since the food is what's important, sadly this is where Sumo truly disappoints. For the first course we ordered Spring Rolls - they were most certainly of the store bought l, frozen varietal. We also shared a Salmon sushi roll that was as unimaginative as possible. Then we each made the mistake of ordering our own entrees. I got the General Tso's while my wife got the Honey Chicken. What was delivered were to veritable platters of heavily breaded and deep fried chicken in the blandest sauces imaginable. We came to the conclusion that they actually used the same sauce for each, just garnished the dishes differently to give the illusion that their menu is more extensive than it is. The entrees come with two sides and between my wife and I we received all choices. The rice is dry and overcooked, the noodles are bland and slimy, and the vegetable medley is an curious mixture of piping hot to frozen cold vegetables. We barely put dents in the several pounds of deep fried chicken before we were too bloated to continue. Never before has a meal made me sad... Only silver lining is the staff was friendly, I would be remiss if I failed to mention that. read more

I have eaten here for years and the food is good enough to keep me coming back. I have noticed that the consistency of quality changes depending on who is cooking, and sometimes my food is better than other times. The service is usually excellent, and the serving staff in particular is always personable. I have to say though, the floor in the restaurant is a bit sticky. this is by far the best japanese restaurant in steubenville! it was much fancier than i expected. when we arrived, we were greeted by the owner, who was super friendly. service was fast and all of the waiters were very attentive. three different people asked for our drink orders within the first five minutes, which is definitely preferable to being ignored! for my meal, i had miso soup and ichiban sushi. the sushi had cream cheese and tempura shrimp inside, and avocado and more shrimp on top. it was delicious. the thing that really made sumo stand out was how fast and professional the service was. the owner himself stopped by a few times just to check on us. when we were ready to pay, our server asked us if we had student ID's so that he could give us a discount, which was so thoughtful. there were fun desserts including fried cheesecake, which i didn't try but would really like to. definitely check out sumo!!!! read more

One of the best Hibachi restaurants in the area. The food is great, the staff is always pleasant and the place is always busy. I usually get the chicken and shrimp hibachi, and the peanut and avocado roll. Both are absolutely fantastic. The only issue is that it's not your traditional hibachi. I'm very very disappointed with the behavior of one of the employees this establishment chose to hire. Multiple times I've gone inside to pick up to go orders and felt very uncomfortable and was sure there would be spit in my food. Not only has this employee made me feel uncomfortable but also friends and family members of mine. This is trashy and unprofessional and when I messaged them directly they ignored my request.
