Located very close to the Dulles airport and the National Air Museum . There's free and easy parking.Entrance is also free.If you want to take a tour that does cost a fee . I came here without expectations and open to what I would see. The area is very walkable.There's a visitor center . It has information and artifacts from the property . It's also where tour tickets can be purchased .I was able to tour the grounds, including the recreated enslaved quarters. I was able to go inside of the enslaved quarters. Some of the buildings are undergoing renovations and can only be viewed from the outside. This includes the main house.The guide stood in the middle of the grassy area and talked about the main house. He also showed pictures of the inside. Yes, this area was part of the Underground Railroad , but not as a beacon of freedom. It is also on the national registry of historic places. Owned by north Virginia's first congressman and his family this was a working plantation. At one point it was also used by confederate soldiers. Give yourself at least 45 minutes for the grounds. read more

This is a nice little historic site from Richard Bland Lee. There is a small gift shop/visitor's center, a couple of outer buildings, then the main house. Our tour guide was great at explaining the history of the house and all the people who lived here. She explained the uses of each room and what was authentic. There was a small, old-fashioned classroom (since they educated local children) and an upper floor with a bunch of spinning equipment they show off more on field trips. Our tour group had about 6 people, so it was quiet and easy to ask questions if we had them. It was a nice little site and window into life in the 19th century. read more

If you are visiting the Air and Space Museum by Dulles Airport and find yourself with a little time to kill then this is a nice park to visit. It is a historical site that was the plantation home of Richard Bland Lee, Northern Virginia's first Representative to Congress, and his wife Elizabeth Collins Lee. It was built in 1794. It is a huge complex, covering 65 acres. It is an adequate parking lot and is well maintained. The site has a bookstore/visitor's center/gift shop. There are some picnic tables near this building where you can sit, eat, and or relax, some of which are shaded. You will also find some building structures at the site that that include the main house, a smokehouse, which you will see fake meat hanging from the overhead, and a replica slave quarter. If you are driving here, there are two parking lots for you to park. You will find a ton of green space, some trails, and additional picnic tables by the main house. I like that this site does not shy away from its slavery past. It faces it head on and pays tribute to those that were enslaved. I like this site. It provides a bit of a history lesson through informational placards placed along the grounds. Gives hikers an opportunity to explore and work out, and is also a place of peace and relaxation. The site has a decent event schedule that includes: Dairy Days-Ice Cream Making & Butter, Peaches and Cream, A Visit With Santa, Colorful Pumpkins, Making a Scarecrow, classic car shows, and various scout merit badge opportunities. In addition to all of that, they offer tours. There is always something going on here. It was pretty chill and laid back during my visit. There were not a lot of people there. This is a neat place to check out. You could spend about 2 hours here exploring. read more

The key is when you go. This was Congressman Richard Bland Lee. If I remember he served and lived here late 1790's. As one can surmise he did have slaves, which is a reprehensible and disgusting thing. To the credit of this property, and occasional historians who visit, there is honesty here now. The land actually was a plantation, but also was used as a field hospital by confederates, in the civil war of 1861-1865. Hours can be limited. My recommendation is go for a special event. These can be found on the park authorities calendar. Here you can see more of what life was like here, have ice cream, and see and understand more. Go on these, as by itself it's underwhelming. There are some nice trails. That I do appreciate. Am happy it's been kept as a park. read more

Sully Historic Site is a plantation from the 18th century. Yes, that means people were enslaved on the property, which some of the markers indicate. If you visit, keep that in mind and use it as a lesson as why we must fight for equitable systems today. The property is spacious with a walking trail to the mansion and to the other sites. Parking is free. They host a number of activities like tours, scavenger hunts and programming for all age groups. read more

Closed to cars! Will you believe it? Nonetheless an awesome historical site. Colonial farmers and adventurers from New York, came down to resettle and work the lands around hills at this site. There is an info stand, some benches, about 20 car spots and trails that lead you to the Sully home above the knoll, overlooking the fields. The main building also doubles as a - I am going to call it, a motel or Youth Hostel (or something or other) - sleep over in the Summer. The caretakers were busy posting flyers and moving supplies, but I for the life of me could not figure out why the main road to the Sully home was CLOSED! The Sully site home is regal, although a bit olden and dilapidated (paint peeling etc.), and the grounds seemed in real need of a professional landscaper. All about were elderly visitors, who all were forced to walk the long windy trails in the sizzling, burning Virginia heat. Sully Site: get your hours straight and open up the roads so folks twice my age can enjoy them too! What's up with that?? Wide, fancy, rolling-hilled historic site which was used on and off by Confederate soldiers as a makeshift field hospital for those who had been maimed by the Union Army. Sully Site sits West of D.C., and because it was in Virginia, was a great vantage point for a flow of information on the Capitol: both from the North and the South. Peaceful. We had an amazing time here! We did both guided tours and our tour guides were very informative about the Sully Plantation. Being able to walk on the same grounds as slaves is both emotional and triumphant. To see how far our country has grown amazes me. This was a hidden gem! We took the tour, which cost us ten dollars and was worth every bit. Everyone who worked here was so kind and informative. Lots of green space to run on, spread out, have a picnic, etc. There is an historic tour of the house, but it's never been open when we've been there. There are some short, fairly well-maintained trails in the area, good short runs or easy walks. Outside the main house is a very spectacular garden that grows everything from vegetables and fruits to flowers and other plants. There is a "visitor center" right when you roll into the park, which sells the usual stuff and has information and is where you can set up your tours ($7) of the house and grounds. There are more bathrooms over near the house, but I've been a couple of times when they were closed for whatever reason and the visitor center was closed, which can put you on the spot. A couple of back-up public toilets would be nice. Our favorite thing to do is grab dome food at Wawa up the road and go to Sully for a picnic. Beautiful spot, and considering it is literally up against 28, it is remarkably serene. read more

Like the Lee-Fendall house I visited earlier in the day, this house I found from a Google search. Otherwise I wouldn't have known about it. TIckets are $7 for adults. This tour was brilliantly interesting. Much of the house is still original which is astonishing it has lasted so many years. My tour guide was a high school intern and really adorable. I loved that she was excited to share history with those of us on the tour (it was myself and 3 others) My favorite parts of the tour 1) The room with the piano. She said the Lee kids practiced music 3 hours a day (ha, I hated practicing) I laughed since I'm a music teacher and she asked if I wanted to play the piano. (I hope I really was allowed and this doesn't get her into trouble.) Of course I said YES what an exciting opportunity. I played some Bach Well-Tempered Clavier (which actually would have originally been written for harpsichord, but I didn't have any Mozart or Haydn off the top of my head which would have been more appropriate for the time) Yes, I have a masters in music, and yes I loved my music history classes including history of keyboard lit ;-) BUT I DIGRESS. 2) The childrens room. It was so interesting how many children would live in one room. I also liked the shoes (learned something new about how they would fit both feet!) and the cross stitching the 6 year old did that still hung on the wall 3) All of the period pieces that still existed in the home like the china, silverware, and some desks and furniture. I left feeling like I learned so much and definitely worth the $7. I am so glad this house is being preserved and visited. They have fun community events too like textile classes (for children) and ice cream days! read more

This place is fascinating and the plantation reminded me of George Washington's plantation in Mt. Vernon, but in a smaller version. There is only one slave house that has been reconstructed and the other two slave houses have been used as gift shop and office. I came here to do some research for a project and it was fantastic! We came on such a lovely day back in spring and it was just so nice outside! We had reservations to have a tour guide show us around the house and the slave quarters. It was a very very reasonable price (7-10$) and the tour guide was fantastic!!! She let me take a bunch of photos and gave me so much extra information. I would highly recommend coming here if you want to learn a little bit of history about the Sully/Chantilly area. They also host events, and fun activities every month for people of all ages. Best part about this place, free entry! You can walk around and explore the trails all for free. It's so nice! read more

Great place to learn about some local history especially if you are into the Civil War type stuff. The area is close to some local businesses like ChickFila and has a big field for picnics and local events that are sometimes held during the weekends. The tour for house is inexpensive but you have to be there at the top of the hours in order to do the tour so make sure you come just before the hour starts otherwise you will be waiting a bit. Great place to learn about history and have a picnic. read more

You need a ticket for the house tour. It's $6/adult and starts every hour from 11am - 4pm. It's a short tour - roughly 8 minutes so you're paying almost a buck a minute. The rest of the property is unimpressive. There's a slave quarter, a well, a smokehouse, a small garden, and seemingly endless greenery. Whoever designed the walkway from the parking lot to the house must have been intoxicated as it takes you a roundabout way. In 80-degree weather, you'll be sweaty and miserable before you'll see anything. read more

You wouldn't know from the neighborhood of McMansions that surrounds it, but this is a historic site hidden in suburbia. It is the home of Richard Bland Lee, northern Virginia's first congressman. Lee was one of the two swing votes that place the the nation's capital right down the highway. When Dulles Airport was built, the plantation was spared. You start your tour by buying a five dollar ticket in a one-room schoolhouse moved here from a nearby location. The tour lasts about an hour and on it you'll see the house, outer buildings and gardens. It is a great place for a picnic in the spring months, Car buffs keep an eye out for classic car shows held here as well. read more

Visited for the antique car show, which was great. It was well organized, with lots of volunteers. We got a map on entry, explaining the layout of different models of cars and my husband really enjoyed it for Father's Day. With the ticket we also got a very short tour of the first floor, although informative, because they were moving everyone along soo quickly there wasn't time to have a look at all the exhibits in the room, so we will have to return to complete the tour. read more

FREAKING AMAZING! I really need to get back to this outstanding piece of history. About 15-years ago my Mom and I went for a special Christmas Tour they had and it was really cool. Anybody I've talked to who has been there in the years since my visit have had only really good things to say as well. Not only is the land - and all of the things that are there - really cool, the people there are really dedicated to what they're doing as far as serving the public. This property, the things, and what is to be learned there are part of what I think we need more of in this Good Land. Sully Historic Site is the perfect rest-from-technology activity that I think a lot of people will enjoy - if they allow themselves to. It's a must-visit. read more

We have passed this 220 year old historical site so many times on Sully road (also known as 28) but never actually stopped to visit. I finally took my daughter here for a report she had to complete and we had an AMaZINg time! We parked in the parking lot area, and proceeded to the visitor trailer. Inside the trailer you can purchase gifts, souvenirs, and/ or your tickets for the house tour. I think the ticket prices are pretty reasonable($7 for adult, $6 for student, $5 for children, and so on)--this is cheaper than the movies and you are getting a look inside of history! If you do not wish to pay for the house tour, you are free to roam around the property and view all of the other smaller houses. To enter the house tour you will need to receive a ticket from the visitor location. After we finished up at the shop, my daughter and I hiked up to the "big house" for our tour. We came on a winter week day, and took the last tour at 4pm. We really lucked out because no one else was waiting and we got our own personal tour! Our tour guide led us through each room of the house and gave us so much background information on each room and the artifacts located within. From the outside you would not expect this house to have as many rooms but there were a lot. Even though we were the last tour and it was the end of the day, our tour guide was very patient and nice, she let us take as much time as we wanted in each room, and we were able to ask as many questions as we could think of. There is only electricity in one room, and the rest of the house began to get dark after 4:40pm (since it is winter it gets darker quicker). Thank goodness my iPhone saved the day and I turned on my phone flashlight to view the remaining rooms on the third floor. You can also take as many pictures as you wish while on the tour. Because we asked so many questions, by the time our tour ended (each tour normally takes 45 minutes) the site was beginning to close (they close at 5pm) and the park people were locking up the additional houses and rooms. My daughter and I will be back to explore the rest of the property and the other things that you can see for free. I would recommend this tour to others---it is so nice to have a piece of history right up the street and not all the way in DC. read more

Visited the Sully plantation and historic site yesterday and had a wonderful time. I'm giving it 5 stars because it is an historically significant site, exceptionally well cared for, and very accessible. Definitely take advantage of the tours. Megan was our guide for the tour of the grounds and did a wonderful job answering questions and bringing to life the lived experience of those who worked and lived on the plantation, both enslaved and free. The unique kitchen and laundry building alone is worth the visit, with the various tools associated with the work and the sense of the key role both played in daily life on Sully. The dairy building, and the well are also interesting and, like the house and kitchen, are original to the site. Other buildings include the smoke house and a reconstructed quarters for the enslaved workers. Taher also did a great job showing us the house. This turn of the 18th century structure is in excellent condition, with the original fireplaces, unique woodwork, flooring, and many of the windows and furnishing all original. Although you could visit the site and see all the buildings in an hour, we stayed for two and a half hours and enjoyed every moment of it. Megan and Taher, our guides, did an excellent job. Sully Historic Site is close to the Dulles extension of the Air & Space Museum and just a short drive to Bull Run Winery and local battlefields. We highly recommend a visit. The grounds are expansive, so great for kids too. This is a Fairfax County Historic Site, not part of the Smithsonian or the National Park Service, so qualifies as a local treasure. read more

I went today with my 7 year old to get our discovery trail sticker and I was blown away. Meggie at the visitors center was so incredibly sweet, helpful and knowledgeable. I very much enjoyed my entire experience with her. The visitors center was clean and calm with lots of goodies including handmade soaps which made the whole place smell so amazing. We bought tickets to the house tour and Judy was our guide. I've had some pretty iffy tours before at other places with kids so I went in a little nervous. Judy was extremely knowledgeable and not only taught us so much, but answered every question in a calm and patient way. She made the entire tour interesting for me and my child start to finish. She interacted with him (which is so rare), and made this a wonderful experience. I'm simply blown away by how wonderful this was. Hi there! read more

Sully Plantation, home to Robert E. Lee's uncle, isn't so much historically significant for what happened there, as it is for how long it's been there. Don't expect the history or lore associated with the James River plantations between Richmond and Williamsburg. The grounds are essentially an open park, a few outbuildings and the main house. The house tour is interesting, and gives some idea of the life of a well-to-do, but not extraordinary Virginia farming family. Overall, it's minor histrical site that's worth a visit, especially if there's a special event like a Civil War weekend, going on. read more

I was a chaperone here with a group of 1st graders. It would have been a nice experience except our haphazard, careless, ignorant, insensitive, "guide" (I use that term extremely loosely!!!) Kathy felt it necessary to use the word slave at least 50 times while talking to a group of 7 year olds for roughly 20 mins. Her overuse the word to a group of children who probably have no idea about the horror & brutality of slavery, & certainly not the TRUE concept was borderline infuriating. But oh racist Kathy didn't stop there. She went on to ask the children multiple times who they think served the family? The slaves. Who do you think cooked the food? The slaves. Who do you think made the beds? The slaves. Who would have had to shine this silverware? The slaves. Who do you think built this house? The slaves. Who do you think did all the work for this unhygienic, racist, family? The slaves. Ok I improvised the last part, But that was Kathy answering her own horribly redundant questions for at least the 16th time in 10 mins. Then she goes even further by pulling out a "shit pot" aka chamber pot. After thoroughly explaining the nastiness of this item. She goes on to say, "Now who do you think had to empty this smelly pot? "A 6 yr old slave Booooooy" she exclaims excitedly her face piglet pink with glee. By this time I have already stepped out with my 7 year old Son once. But now I am ready to take Kathy to task aBout her gross negligence of etiquette around a small group of very young, MOSTLY Latino & African children. I had the opportunity to listen to the other properly trained tour guides & not once did I hear them mention ANYTHING lil Miss Kathy did. Just to be certain I talked to a few other black moms that had chaperoned. Simply asking how they felt about the field trip. Although they were a bit uncomfortable with some of the pictures & literature that lined the walls, they DID NOT experience the "Kathy" tour. Either she needs to be retrained on the proper way to interact with children. Absent when there are MULTICULTURAL children present. Or fired. This was NOT a free trip. We all PAID to visit this place & I would advise anyone of color that decides to chaperone their child on a trip here to SPECIFICALLY ask for ANYONE accept low key white sheet wearing Kathy. As well as any school that visits here makes certain that her unprofessionalism does not make them feel it necessary to express their dissatisfaction , contact the school board to end these type of trips or exclude their children from this particular "experience." On the other hand the lady in the vintage garb that made old fashioned toys with the children was lovely & managed not to say slave even 1 time. Maybe she should train KkKathy. read more

I've had the pleasure of touring many of Virginia's historic homes and plantations (Monticello, Mt Vernon, Gunston Hall, Montpellier, Berkley Plantation, etc.), hence my reason and interest in visiting Sully Historic Site. I would rate the experience at 2.5 stars only because it doesn't have the excitement and draw of more famous homes such as those I previously mentioned. I am pleased to see Fairfax County keep a site of this significance preserved and open to the public. I wish more people visitied the site to learn about history rather than the numerous events held on it's property (car shows, civil war events, etc.). read more

Instead of the packaged push-em-on-through tour of Mount Vernon, you get an hour of a lovely federalist era home with information about both the Lees who built it and the slaves who maintained it; civil war history of how women living at Sully and Little Sully coped without their husbands and kept the house standing; and also why the house was saved by an act of Congress.
