A friend and I finally got a chance to visit Sugarloaf after hearing great things about this particular vineyard from word of mouth. I came on a Friday afternoon, the weather was perfect for sitting outside (not too hot, not too cold). Upon coming in, the staff was quick to great us and were very friendly. I got the mixed flight and the other person I was with got the all red flight. Once we got our flights, we sat outside. The did have fans on which helped with the heat and there were only a handful of people so it wasn't crowded. I did note that later in the evening more people came so coming a bit early did help us to secure seating. Both of our flights were absolutely delicious and fresh. We ended up getting a bottle of the Circe which was our personal favorite. I have to mention that the music they had over the speaker earlier in the day absolutely set the vibe (they played a lot of 90's R&B). After about an hour there was live music and the musician was very engaging, to the point where a toddler stood in front of him and stared in amazement for at least 2 minutes straight. We were please to see how the musician interacted with his littlest fan and the rest of the crowd. The food from the food truck was good. Although we could wished for more variety, we did buy a few sliders which was a nice snack while finishing the bottle we bought. Overall, if you are looking for a vineyard that isn't overly crowded, has live music, shade to enjoy your flights and isn't loud so you can enjoy conversation, this is the place to be. Sugarloaf Winery would have been perfect if the weather had been nicer. We visited with a large group of 10+ people, and while the indoor space felt a bit tight but cozy, it ultimately was not enough room for a group our size. That said, it actually would have been great for a big group if the weather were good, since there is tons of outdoor seating available. The staff was friendly and the ambiance was great. I really loved that they had live music outside, but it was too windy for me to sit and fully enjoy it. I ended up staying for only a couple of songs and wished I could have stayed longer. An interesting setup is that wine flights are purchased outside, while glasses are picked up inside, which was a bit unexpected but easy enough once you figure it out. The wines were nice, nothing that really stood out in a good or bad way, but very enjoyable overall and perfect for a beautiful day spent outdoors. The crab fries my friends ordered from the food truck outside was fun to eat too, definitely satisfactory for those with munchies when you drink. Overall, this feels like an ideal spot for smaller groups indoors or larger groups when the weather cooperates. I would definitely come back on a nicer day to fully enjoy the outdoor space. read more

A nice winery worth visiting. They have white, red, and mix flights where you get to try four wines in each flight. We asked for two samples of the cab franc and chard as we wanted to buy a bottle and listen to the live music. They happy gave us a taste of each. I have been here a few times checking out the local music scene while enjoying the summer rays outside. I just noticed that even though I have visited here before, it is my first time writing a review for this spot. The only thing I usually get here is their Sangria, since they don't serve wines, I prefer. When we visit, we always get a table closer to wherever the musician is playing as it is now covered and enjoy the food from whatever the visiting food truck is on that day. For our recent visit, the food truck was DM Sliders, and the musician was Shane Gamble. The day we visited was a relaxed day and so we enjoyed it. Food was good. Music was even better. The employees I came in contact with have always been very helpful. Parking is plenty in their lot. read more

A nice afternoon to spend at this winery , especially after doing a hike up the mountain. Plenty of outdoor seating, the place looks and feels very inviting AND a major plus - they allow dogs so bring your pupper and enjoy ! They also allow you to bring your own food so we had quite a party Their wines are good too! You can either enjoy selected wine flights, choose by the glass or just get a bottle . Sooo many delicious wines to choose from and they were really nice and accommodating to let us taste some We bought a bottle of their white blend which we chose over the viognier ( which was also good when tasted ) to share plus extra glass of Cabernet Franc. Early Fall Weekend Winery Excursion Late September to early October, I decided to go on a ride into the countryside. I was searching for this farm stand with heirloom vegetables. Unfortunately, the stand was no longer there and I did not find the multi-color pumpkins I was seeking. You see, when you go to the grocery store, you only find the standard orange pumpkins. Determined, to have a good time and fruitful excursion, id pick a new destination. I decided since I was only a few miles away from the Sugarloaf Winery, I go there instead. Lucky for me, they had a tasty food truck serving food and a vendor fair going on that day at the winery. Also, there was a singer playing music on an outdoor stage, sing cover songs charming the crowds. I enjoyed a glass of smooth white wine, and the service was exceptional good. I had such a good time, I intended to return for Halloween but maybe another time. This is definitely a fan favorite and I'll return sometime soon. read more

After enjoying a tasting of the Rose Wine, I bought a bottle for $25. The sangria was fun to try, but I prefer the Rose. It was crisp and not to dry with a subtle sweetness. This is a winery near Clarksburg, Md. very nice property with open fields and a beautiful view. They sell sample fights of white, red and mixed white and red wine. Each consisted of 4 half pours and were priced in the $20 range for the flight. I had a mix of white and reds and they were all good. There is both outdoor and indoor seating. A food truck with burgers and fries were the only food. I did not have any. There is no table service. read more

With covid times they are only offering flights which was $20 a flight. But the wine was so good and as I was with a fiend we did 2 flights and were able to try all 7 wines. They were delicious and Gouda is the cheese to my heart so of course we got some of that. I am glad they figured out a way to stay open during covid times. This place is off the beaten path but in a beautiful location about 40 mins outside of DC. I went with a friend for an afternoon barrel wine tasting and I was very impressed with how friendly and knowledgeable all the staff were. Upon arrival, were checked in the main general area and directed to the barrel room. There wasn't much signage, so we ending up going into another tasting room outside before finding the right place. Once inside the barrel room, we were greeting by another lovely staff member that explained how the facilities work, what grape varieties were harvested last season and the original story of one of the varietals. We even got to meet the winemaker himself, which was a pleasant surprise. We got to taste 5 wines in total before heading back out to the patio to enjoy the afternoon. I was there in January, so it was a bit chilly, but there are outdoor fire pits if you can snag a seat near one to warm up. We were expected food trucks, but that afternoon there weren't any so we had to settle for the charcuterie and snacks we packed just in case. I'd recommend this vineyard if you're looking for a relaxing outing with friends, family, and even your pets. read more

This was a nice little getaway. A home away from home. I've lived in Montgomery County for a while now but this was actually my first time checking this place out. I loved the fact that in comparison to a lot of other nearby vineyards, this one is open all weekdays considering the fact that I came in with a friend on a random Monday. There weren't that many people present and it was pretty quiet, but I'm sure it would look different on a weekend. We both got the tasting flights with 2 reds and 2 whites for $20 each, which I thought was a pretty sweet deal. I loved loved loved the Vidal Blanc! Next time I go in, I will probably get a bottle of it to go. I really wanted to taste their dessert wine but unfortunately, they were only selling those by the bottle. Ok, this was fun! Talk about escaping the city for a fun and peaceful day in the country! We arrived upon opening and were lucky enough to have the establishment almost to ourselves for a few hours. We came after a large brunch and a peaceful stroll at a nearby lavender farm. The chilled wine tasting was an enjoyable boozy and cooling experience on a super hot day. I recommend the Circe and the Petit Manseng. After we tasted their 7 wines we decided to relax inside and enjoy the AC while sipping on their house Sangria. We drank and laughed for several hours before remembering that we have dogs that need attention at home! Luckily SMV is dog friendly so next time the puppies are coming with us! read more

Right on the road as you leave Sugarloaf, the winery has a prime location that no doubt contributes to its success. Lovely open lawn, outdoor seating. The exterior and ambiance is super cute barnyard vibes that blends in next to the mountain really well and makes for a nice country feel. The service was pretty good and it was easy to order flights, glasses of wine, or charcuterie. My friends and I decided to split a bottle of red. We have always loved this place, but had not been there for a couple of years. We tried to drive up Sugarloaf Mountain today to picnic, but it was so full that the gates were closed. So we went back to the winery (they open at noon, but there was already a line of cars forming at 11:45). They are doing a great job with Covid precautions. Masks are required if you go inside to buy your wine or cheese & crackers, or to use the bathrooms. Masks are also required when you step up to buy wine at the outdoor tasting tent. We bought a bottle of Chardonnay, which was very good. You can still bring your own picnic too. We saw some people coming back to tables with a flight of tasting glasses. They have lots of outdoor tables and plenty of room to spread out and enjoy. It felt like a very safe experience in the Age of Covid, and we had a very nice time. read more

Nice winery which is very close to a hike! We did the Sugarloaf hike on a Saturday and then arrived at the winery (in our hiking clothes) at 2pm. It was busy, all the tables were taken so people had brought their own chairs or were sitting on the grass. There are three seating areas, one in the shade, one in the sun, and one on the patio where they had live music - don't worry, all are socially distant! Reservations are not an option here and they are dog friendly - lots of dogs! After we snagged a table, we went inside to pick our drinks. You can do this inside or they have an area outside to do so. They had maybe 5-6 options, a red, white, dessert wine, rose and sangria. One woman had told us that we could go ahead and try them because they weren't holding tastings due to COVID-19 and happily gave us a few. When my other friend came in to try some wine, another woman who worked there told us that we were only allowed two samples, that what we had tried was sufficient and she wouldn't be giving us anymore. It was awkward and very off-putting how she went about it. Had we been told this upfront, it wouldn't have been an issue at all! Ultimately, we had planned on buying a few bottles to bring home with us, but this interaction made it so we did not purchase them. They have food items for purchase - a few cheeses, dips and crackers. There was also a Korean food truck, but it was sold out of food by the time we arrived. Cute chill vineyard right off 270 in Moco. Its and nice quick get away from the DC burbs. Nice open area to enjoy food and drink, they usually have rotation of food trucks. The wine selection here is solid. Ample parking and open space so nice to bring kids and pups. After a long hike looping Sugar Loaf Mountain, I decided a treat on the way home was in order. Stopped by neighboring SMV only .5 mi away, for an awesome curbside experience. Staff will approach your vehicle if you wait inside, however, it seemed fine that I walked up to view the special curbside wine list, then spoke with someone who wore a mask and gloves to order. Everyone was sweet and kind, advising us to try a local pizzeria for our post hike feast. Major bonus and future visit plan, the grounds were gorgeous - picnic tables, a windmill, a huge red barn which is open for entry (pre and post coronavirus), all the charm for a casual but romantic date. read more

Came to Sugarloaf Vineyards after going to Rocklands Farms and finished off our mini Maryland winery tour. The tasing menu was 8 wines for $10. They were unfortunately out of the Comus wine, so it was actually 9 wines for $10. I liked their red wines better than their whites and roses but that's just my palate preference. We tasted in the exterior wine tent and had a great time with our server. We opted for the sangria and a nice outdoor seating area to enjoy our beverages. read more

The very friendly man behind the counter and I struck up conversation about the difference between MD & VA reds and was super excited to share that they aged the 2019 cab franc which was delicious. I highly recommend the Penelope - even if you aren't a white wine person! It was perfectly dry and citrusy. Overall service was great and the wine was wonderful!
