This is my second visit to Sugarbacon on a Sunday. They only offer the brunch menu and it has some good selections. Shrimp and grits has been a great choice. The service at the bar has been awesome. My rating really is due to the waitstaff and the kitchen. Our first visit was a few months ago and our second visit was yesterday. Both times we had a party of 5 or 6 persons and we would arrive after 1pm. During both times when food was being delivered to the table, one order was forgotten and it would be 10 mins before the last person at the table would get their meal. No manager visit or apology for the delay other than it should be out shortly. This location was not extremely busy on either visit. Better detail is needed to train waitstaff on refreshing drink orders. It was painful getting simple drink refills of tea and water. I expected the person dropping off the food would ask if there was anything else they could get for us. Not a peep. I will be back for cocktails and enjoying the patio area. read more

We have been waiting to try this place for two years, and finally went it was such a disappointing experience. Will start with a good, the short ribs and fillet were very good. Their namesake, sugar bacon was average at best of nowhere near what it look like on the picture. The avocado toast was terrible. We got a ribeye and it was really thin and not much better than a TV Salisbury steak. The part that was the most frustrating is that for the $28 short rib you can substitute grits for the mashed potatoes but the $56 ribeye, no that wasn't possible. We went here for the weekend brunch- the service was very warm and friendly, the food was absolutely delicious (but quite heavy), the ambience was lovely. This is a must restaurant in downtown McKinney! Upon arrival the hostesses were pleasant and very friendly. We were seated at a high top table in the bar area, the server came over and she was phenomenal! She had great recommendations and thoughts for us. The sugarbacon appetizer is A MUST! Devil eggs were ok but looked nothing like what the website showed. Steak was cooked perfectly and the ribeye tacos were great! Bar was slow with our drinks but over all very good. I really enjoyed this place, just a quick tip; make reservations because it gets full. Anyway, the service was great, the server was friendly and helpful. The food was delicious and finger licking good! I had the prime burger and the wife had the fried chicken sandwich, which was really good. I wanted to enjoy this experience so bad. My boyfriend and I went to dine in for a little date night and were sadly disappointed. The service we received was slow and semi welcoming. Our appetizer was cold and undercooked+ chewy. The sugar bacon was a no go. They try to charge you $14 for a plate of store bought pork rinds and cold pork belly. My boyfriend ordered a Michelob ultra in a glass and it tasted like champagne/ severely watered down beer. We left and paid our tab before we could even get our entrées because of the poor quality food and beer we received. I normally wouldn't leave reviews like this but I would have for anyone to spend over $100+ on average or even low grade food. We left and went to wing stop. read more

I made a reservation at sugarbacon to celebrate a birthday. I drove 30 minutes on the tollway to get there. Only for Larry to tell me that they're closed for an event their system didn't block it off the event correctly. So the fact that I made a reservation and drove 30 minutes on the tolway to get there... only to turn me away when he got there.... he didn't even offer a comped meal... He said next time he'd give me 1 free drink. A pitiful offer from. Larry also tried to give a pitiful excuse saying he called us. I checked my phone and I had 0 voivemails from him. We had 1 missed call 17 minutes before our reservation began. We were already over halfway there on the TOLLWAY and DRIVING at that time. Larry didn't even bother to leave a voice-mail and cancel the reservation. I originally made the reservation 30 HOURS PRIOR. And Larry waited until 17 minutes before the reservation began. What Larry SHOULD HAVE DONE was CANCELED THE RESERVATION IN ADVANCE WITH A NOTE. He had 30 hours to do so. Larry's pitiful excuse that he tried to call 1 time 17 minutes prior to a reservation that was made 30 hours in advance was a pitiful excuse. He could have at least offered a free meal next time since we had already driven all way over there since he didn't notify in advance and waited until 17 minutes before the reservation to try to call Don't waste your time or money going here. ON TOP OF THAT, Larry didn't even bother to cancel tbe reservation, so I was unable to make a reservation anywhere else, because opentable showed I had a current reservation with them. So not only did they ruin my experience there, and ruin our birthday party, they prevented us from making another reservation elsewhere. Don't waste your time or money going here. This place is AMAZING!!!! Everything I ate was super duper delicious!!!! The waitress was very attentive the atmosphere was chill and calm. I had the sugar bacon appetizer and DO NOT skip on this, it's the main reason I want to go back right now! Let's start with we had a very bad service experience. We went for Sunday brunch and our beverages took a long time to arrive. After 30 min of waiting for our food, our chicken tenders were RAW.... My husband cut into them and they were entirely pink on the inside. This would have given our 3 year old food poisoning for sure if he ate even one bite. Our waitress even asked if we wanted to keep the Mac n cheese that was on the same plate as the raw chicken. We sent it back to the kitchen and were still waiting for our two other adult plates that never arrived. We cancelled our order entirely and left. The food is good, number 1 overall I'm not complaining about that. However, I had the short rib and from my many other experiences at restaurants this has been a cut that's fork tender and needs no knife to eat. This meat was flavorful but came out less than hot and I had to attack it with a knife which for a 30 dollar piece of meat seems unnecessary. The mashed potatoes that came with it were some of the best I have had in my life both in restaurants or by home cooks which made my night BUT... came out less than hot. I can't say this place doesn't deserve 5 stars because the flavors are great and the execution of other meals was fantastic but I'm sad at the short rib. We live near by and really wanted this restaurant to succeed. But tonight shut the door on that idea for us. Pork Belly was awful & tasteless & dry until we added some sweetener & lime juice which made it edible Shrimp and grits SO salty ( was the only flavor you noticed with these). Shrimp was fishy. It's been better, like the pork belly, but that's one of several problems here - lack of consistency. The berry salad was just the basics with a non- interesting salad dressing (again flavorless) and way to many sweet walnuts that were maybe supposed to hold together some interesting flavor profile but fell short. Same walnuts on Brussels (first batch was delicious (the best part of our $95 dollar meal actually but only $12) the second batch was not cooked thoroughly and 1/2 was inedible. We were overcharged for the side of scallops which were rubbery... and had to requests sauces to try and make them edible. So not returning. The best part was the happy hour bee stings and an exceptional staff member that was bartending, training, waitressing and then acted as a manager by apologizing profusely for our experience. Sugarbacon was OK. We came in during their Friday brunch and was a little let down by the lack of options. We ordered the actual Sugarbacon and was let down by the amount of fat that was attached to the very small amount of meat. There were three pieces of what I would consider pork belly and 4 pieces of watermelon in between all very beautiful displayed. We ordered the Brussel Sprouts which were IMO the best thing on the menu and thought they had a great flavor and mouth feel. The were cut into fourths with walnuts as well. For our actual meal, we ordered ordered the Ribeye and eggs and the Proper brunch. For the ribeye, it was perfectly cooked medium rare so that was a plus. For the Proper brunch we subbed the biscuits for cornbread and I have to say, that cornbread was very delicious. Our bartender was very sweet and attentive as well. Ordered an old fashion and a Devils Cup, coffee drink and both came out decent. The coffee flavored bourbon has a very old coffee taste and that may be normal with coffee bourbon, I'm not sure. The cream that came atop was really good though. I ordered a Flat Iron Cobb salad and to go with everything on the side so my fiancé could have it for a work lunch and it came out with nothing on the side...but they fixed and it and all was good. [= also, I noted that the flat iron stake was cooked to medium to medium well so if I had to do it again I'd be sure to specify the way we wanted it cooked. Decided to pop in here for our friend's birthday. We all had a different item from the menu. Tomahawk steak, ribs, scallops, and my favorite bbq Shrimp & Grits. It was absolutely delicious! Apparently the (inaccurate) threat of bad weather caused SB to be almost empty this eve. The meal we enjoyed was top notch. We started with a dozen each of the oysters, a Thursday eve $ special that should not be missed. After that, Kim loved the duck breast, and my grilled pork chop was excellent. We also had the Truffle French fries, tasty but not worth the money. For the main dish we had the spare rib and pork chop. Pork chop was good, not super dry. It was good, don't get me wrong, but nothing super special, you know? The spare rib was huge! And the mushroom sauce that came with the spare rib was delicious. The meat was also very tender that you could peel the meat off the bone. The music inside the venue did not match the aesthetics. It was good, and a filling meal, but it wasn't anything exquisite or out of the ordinary, and it was nearly $30. My husband ordered the fish tacos and enjoyed his sides more than his dish. The rice was very good. For dessert we ordered the biscuit with vanilla ice cream. It was very tasty and the biscuit was doughy and delicious. They added what I can only assume was canned peaches that felt like they were just thrown in there, and didn't work with the dish at all. Today, three of us went to brunch to try out SugarBacon in McKinney today! We stared off with two appetizers. The pork belly and deviled eggs and our eggs did not even have any bacon on top like the image and description said! They were okay, nothing to say or write "Wow" about. Two of us had the Frittata and my eggs were scorched and I could not eat them. My other friends frittata was not even cooked; eggs were runny inside! My other friend had had the Proper Breakfast. Her potatoes were overcook, cold and all swiffled up as if they had been sitting under a heat lamp! The waiter or even then manger did not make a comment on why we did not touch our food. They could plainly see none of us touch our entree's when they came to pick up our plates and glasses. Oh and I decided to order a cup coffee at the end of the meal! It was cold to say the least, and our waiter said he just made it! We won't be visiting this restaurant again. Definitely not recommend this to any of my coworkers or friends! We originally wanted to check out another spot but it was too full so we wandered around and found this spot. The place is dimly lit and it has a diner feel with the big signs with "specials" and the ability to see the cooks creating food but also has a restaurant feel because there are booths and seats that are comfortable with nice sturdy beautiful wooden tables and Modern, calming, light fixtures. I ordered the sugar bacon as an appetizer and then the fish tacos while my husband ordered the ribs after the waiter suggested them. The sugarbacon was so perfect!!! It fell apart in your mouth and was perfectly cooked and so savory. My fish tacos were phenomenal. I did not need any sauce for them. The chef got it right. My husband shared a rib with me and those were also perfection. I could not be happier the other spot was so packed. This is somewhere NOT to pass up! Our waiter (Chris??) was not annoying and asking us every 5 min if we were okay and was helpful with suggestions and the ambiance with lighting and smells coming through the entire place made it a wonderful experience. The son's and their wives hosted us at this McKinney establishment to celebrate my birthday, and this first visit sold me. A short walk from the square we found a tasteful upscale casual setting, professional service, and comfortable dining. Even the noise volume stayed fine as the space filled up with weekend diners. The circular booth was perfect for our party of six, and I highly recommend it. We shared most entrees and could produce almost no complaints. The dishes our party raved over included smoked pork belly, roasted half chicken, short rib with mushroom sauce. I didn't get a bite of that long bone chop, but it looked fantastic, and I will try it on a return visit. Even the fried chicken sandwich was a juicy winner. Star sides included the mac & cheese and collards. There were a couple of items that didn't flip my skirt. That cornbread with mascarpone - Just not my thing, about as far from what I call cornbread as it could be. The grilled oyster - was there actually an oyster under all that goo? These two issues were more personal taste issues, and doesn't stop me from rating highly because in McKinney, it just doesn't get any better than this. read more

My drink ( I can't remember the name , I think it's pink something, it has grape fruit in it) It was tasty a bit tart ( the grape fruit I know) the watermelon and pork belly was ok, I thought it would be crisper but just really fatty not a lot of meat. The crawfish pot pie and corn bread ( inserts chef kiss) yummy ! delicious! The Crawfish pot pie was so flaky and soft nice and creamy lots of crawfish. The corn bread ! Y'all I'm not a fan of sweet cornbread but this cornbread I would eat over and over again! My mom loved the chicken! Banana pudding ! so good. You have to take it out and mix the ingredients on the plate they give you.The servings are plenty and more than enough. I felt like Violet Beauregarde when we left. We had a 6pm reservation on a Monday. We were seated immediately and the service was nice. This review is mainly for the kitchen. We were served old dry deviled eggs that were inedible. The manager brought us new eggs, and we greatly appreciated that. The shrimp cocktail was a let down, huge U-10 prawns, but over cooked and hard. The Caesar salad had wilted brown lettuce, which is disappointing for the price point of this restaurant you would think they would shave Parmesan themselves, and not use the shaved Parmesan you get from US Foods or some other vendor. We ordered the filet and the scallops. The filet temp was well done on half of it, and med rare on the other half. I don't know how that even happens.. unless half of your grill is turned off. The red bliss potatoes were dry and old. There was a crust from where they were sitting in a chaffing dish or double boiler. At $42.00 this dish missed the mark entirely! Very disappointing. The scallops were delicious. The creamed corn flavorful, but for $30 this dish only gave the guest 4 scallops, and 2 shaved asparagus stalks? That's an insane markup. This restaurants vision of what they want to be is confusing. I'm guessing the brunch scene is where it's at. The items looked priced better and maybe the perceived value is better. We ended up needing to go somewhere else for more food, since the portions were small. $140.00 + tip... And you still have to swing by McDonald's for a double cheeseburger. Also, if guests are paying $42 for a steak, maybe you should have actual salt and pepper shakers. Not the McCormick grinders you find at Kroger. This is why this establishment is so strange.. are you upscale pr are you an over priced eatery? You have aged meat but your servers are in sweatshirts? Im confused. We left disappointed.
