The host knows everyone that comes in, unless you're out of town like myself, but you get greeted with warm welcomes and great service! This was a nice change for in the city of Chicago's busyness and chaotic traffic where it felt more calm and relaxing. They have a great selection of breakfast food, which is what we focused on mainly coming here for and also other diner food choices as well. I selected the sausage & gravy Benedict and it was probably one of my favorite dishes now! The poached egg was made perfectly served over two sausage patties and drowned in sausage gravy! Served with hot fresh hash browns that were perfect blend that you could say, completed the dish! Went here for the first time a couple weeks ago. It's a good mom and pop style diner with really good breakfast food. Not just the good food but the staff was incredibly friendly and attentive. Would highly recommend for breakfast or a quick lunch if you work in the area inside is very cozy and it has easy parking. One of the better restaurants in the area. read more

Just another Mediterranean dinner in Chicago. The service was good. I got the top notch (skirt steak) skillet. The steak was pretty good, but it had not flavor. The veggies should be roasted or sautéed together before they go in, and you need to salt it. They could do that and just put them in for for they broil it. This had been one of my husband's favorite breakfast places to eat at for years. A head waitress named Vicky ruined that reputation. You see I was dating my husband at the time and one day two years ago we came right up to the counter to sit and eat. I was fine with my food, but Rob got sick and threw-up his food. He came in to eat another day and Vicky was very rude to him, she told him if he was sick not to come in. She thought he had the Flu. I then wrote a letter to the owner of the restaurant, George. We waited for a response and for Vicky to apologize for her behavior. Vicky never apologized for her rudeness as well as George never replied, either, and little did we know that my husband would be diagnosed with Cancer on a later date. read more

Highly recommending this place. We ordered the Popeyes crepes (spinach and egg with hollandaise), a Monte Cristo, and the Sugarbowl waffle (pecans, vanilla ice cream, topped with cinnamon and honey). The meals came with chicken dumpling and cream of broccoli soup. Our order came at the perfect temperature and all of it was delicious. The only negative: the hollandaise was "broken" (didn't stop us from devouring the meal)! The positives: clean restaurant, friendly staff (even topped off my leftover soup), free wifi, easy/free parking in the garage, good honest food, and THEY PUT SPRINKLES ON THE HOT COCOA. I'm a waitress and I (frustratingly) get hyper-critical of other restaurants and servers, and how clean a place is, to me, more important than the service. I usually don't write reviews on a less than stellar experience. However I found the rating deceiving based on my experience. Please know I did not realize they closed at 4pm when I arrived at 3pm. Breakfast at lunch seemed fast enough to not hold anyone up and there were a few tables occupied. I found the pricing on the higher end in comparison to like establishments. A 3 eggs, meat and potatoes with coffee and soup $23.00 plus. The man at the register/greeting people was on his phone the whole time. A child approximately 5ish, walking around and yelling at the top of his voice occasionally. An employee stacking chairs, sweeping and then mopping right by my table while still eating. I must say that the smell of the mopping and cleaner did sit well while still eating my food. I realized that the man on the phone was an owner ( ish) when he asked my server to give me my bill. He approached and asked if I needed anything, I did not although I did express my distaste in the cleaning while I was eating. I understand that keeping/hiring employees ( there wasn't a single issue with the staff that I experienced) which was his explanation for this. I said that as an owner up front on his phone constantly was not setting the right example for the staff. He then said he isn't an owner, his wife is. I was actually perplexed. The taste of the food and service are the only reason I am being generous with 2 stars. I am huge supporter of small family business but when an owner doesn't care what the customer experience is like in their establishment and the only focus is being able to leave themselves as soon as the clock turns, I can honestly say I will not go back. We drove out of our way to eat breakfast here and I'm so glad we did. My three daughters and I enjoyed fresh pecan french toast, chorizo omelet, pancakes, hash browns, eggs, fresh squeezed orange juice and hot coffee! The omelet was very large loaded with yummy chorizo, veggies and cheese. The french toast was served with fresh bananas, & loads of pecans. The pancakes were large and very fluffy. The coffee had a good flavor and the orange juice was good just maybe a little tart. The restaurant wasn't big, very quaint and homey. We were received well and seated quickly. Although several tables were empty, the hostess crammed 4 senior citizens in a booth stating the tables were needed for bigger party. Then she kept talking to people, who she did not know, about things she was interested in. Think she just wanted to here her own voice. This place is great. Service is friendly and frequent. Visited with my son today and we had 3 different waitresses check on us. Definitely nice to see a team effort. I had the Serena's special and my son had the steak and eggs. Very yummy! Food is served fast and hot and coffee refilled before you need to ask. Parking is also convenient. As with most breakfast restaurants, weekends are busy and sometimes there is a wait. There's not a lot of organization when you walk in and there are people waiting. We had to ask around to see who had checked in and who hadn't. Small waiting area and you don't get a buzzer or anything so you have to wait inside to hear your name called. So my wife was at the dentist down the street and I was starving. so I yelped restaurants around us serving breakfast and this place popped up. This place was awsome. Everything about it was great. The greeter at the door was very polite. The servers were polite and the food was outstanding. I had a butcher's skillet and it was great. Even the prices weren't bad at all. Nice little diner. the staff is super friendly and helpful. It has the typical breakfast/brunch fare and a very extensive menu. The coffee isn't very delicious.Kind of burnt/blah. My husband is a pancake fanatic and doesn't really like them here- but he claims their waffles are good! I usually go for one of the skillets! Prices seem to be pretty middle of the road and the ambiance is what you would expect in this type of establishment. They use paper checks and you pay at the hostess stand. I have struggled to find much of a difference to report between the various diners in the area: Mrs. V's, Silver Stallion, Des Plaines Family Restaurant & Pancake House, Andy's, etc. I suppose Gail's Carriage House seems somehow better than the other food-wise, but I can't really put my finger on why. But in the realm of Sunday brunch, mostly it comes down to the parking lot. The Sugar Bowl: very nicely renovated, spacious, attentive staff, perfectly good food, ridiculously large portions, overall nice vibe. It's in walking distance of my home, so I don't care much about the parking lot. Actually they don't have one, though there's plenty of parking on-street and in the Metro Square Garage. The one thing that tweaks me about this place is that they almost always have Fox News on one or both of their TVs. Really now. I have just come from church. I don't need this to challenge my mood. read more

I've been thinking about stopping here for an eternity - anyplace with a sign out front like theirs deserves a visit! Finally stopped in to check it out and overall, it was pretty good. First off - the service was friendly and pretty fast. My server asked if I wanted to see a newspaper in addition to promptly taking, placing and delivering my order. The other servers working there all seemed to have a great attitude - to me that's especially important at breakfast time - nobody wants their day to start with a crabby waitress! For breakfast, I ordered an Irish Skillet - mainly because I was in the mood for Corn Beef Hash. Theirs is canned - which is OK, that's the norm for most restaurants. Overall, the food was pretty good and a reasonable portion for a reasonable price. But speaking of prices, while most of their offerings were fairly priced, two things that stood out were the $4.50 fresh squeezed OJ (I had some at another place last week for 2/3's the price) and the dollar markup for getting an English Muffin instead of toast or pancakes with my breakfast. My issue with that is that the differential in price on the menu is LESS than a dollar. Plus I think it's the first place I've been in that does add a premium for an English Muffin. Granted, they do cost more than toast, but most restaurants don't add a surcharge anyway. Nonetheless, for the most part I enjoyed my meal there and will go back. read more

FINALLY made it back to the Sugar Bowl since the reopening, again, for breakfast and was absolutely pleased with food, service, atmosphere... all of it! The new decor is lovely, very modern and pleasant, and not the same old decor you get from your local, American faire/family friendly restaurants... bold colors and tiled floors, lovely really. Food: First, my husband ordered blueberry pancakes, and while it's always frustrating that no one ever puts the blueberries in the pancakes (like I do at home) it was so refreshing to have fresh blueberries on top, instead of a compote that's overly saucey and too sweet. Husband really enjoyed it and said that the pancakes were very fluffy. Son ordered kids scrambled eggs and got plenty, even though the menu said he was only getting one. Daughter ordered kids French Toast and we were amazed that she got 4 halves! Large portion for a kids menu item! I had a broccoli & cheese eggwhite omlette (I'm not very versitile in the mornings... it's what I always order) and it was light/fluff/florets only... yum! My mother ordered one of their skillets, asked for onions in her hash browns and was very happy with her meal as well. The staff was incredibly attentive! I'm not happy about our last visit- usually good experiences here. I ate my skillet and a mans black whisker/beard hair was at the bottom. I showed the waitress (who never once asked how food was) and she didn't apologize or anything. So after several minutes I went to manager at the front and explained. She then went to talk with waitress. Waitress admitted she should have apologized. Then the manager only took $4 bucks off my meal!!!! Any and I repeat any place you eat at would give you a meal free for the disgusting situation. I'm shocked at how they handled this- very disappointing- we will not be returning there. read more

I have been hearing about this place since high school and after living in Des Plaines for about 18 years, I finally step into the Sugar Bowl. I randomly came in today for lunch to finally see what the buzz was about. The service was good and the staff was very attentive and hospitable. My server was really nice and checked on me often enough during my 2 hour stay... yea I'm a slow eater-- haha. I ordered one of the items listed on the specials list on the table for $6.99, which was a ham omelet with home fries, toast and a cup of coffee. The serving portion was so huge that I couldn't finish everything on my plate-- so I knew I was getting my money's worth. I may also have gotten super full because of continual service of filling up my coffee cup a lot. It was great cause I really need a good cup of coffee, and ended up finishing about 4 cups! The type of toast that I got with my meal was raisin, but I didn't expect marmalade to come with. I'm usually not a fan of orange marmalade, but this was tasty! I don't know if it is homemade, but it was flavorful! The home fries and ham omelet was also good. The omelet was really light and fluffy, which probably contributed to its massive size. I also saw how they treat their regulars well, the hostess knew who she was talking to and conversed with them. Their service wasn't too slow today, since it was busy for lunch, but she would also apologize if she came back to the front-- which I didn't mind cause I wasn't in any rush. The place and the bathrooms weren't too bad since they were renovated. And the booths were also comfy. There was also 2 large flat screens which featured the news. Nestled in the location previously held by the original Sugar Bowl (an old fashioned ice cream place) the varied restaurant meets almost any need. I love the large and tasty omelets. I'm gonna be honest and say I was partially sold to come here because I'm a big Arthur fan and know him and his friends frequently hang out at "The Sugar Bowl." Also, for some reason, I thought this place wasn't in business anymore but was kept around because the exterior looks cool. I've only been here once and it was such a wonderful experience. The service is outstanding. Our waitress was very friendly and easy to talk to. Upon arrival, we were seated in a booth but got moved to the counter upon request. I got the Philly Cheese Steak which comes with soup (I got Chicken and Wild Rice) and fries. It's a very generous portion considering all that it comes with. While we were eating, our waitress introduced us to the chef cooking for us in the back kitchen. Overall, it was a very welcoming atmosphere.
