Back then he was working for someone else. Now with 11 years of experience, his own location, and his time as a public school teacher, Yury seems to be doing what he told us he would do all those years ago. This is an amazing tutor. He wants results from the kids. He wants to make sure that all his students know how to study on their own, so they never need another tutor again.

Yury strives to develop intellect and a desire to learn in his students. He teaches us how to read, write & analyze properly from a young age, and emphasizes the importance of looking up words we don't know, so we can learn. His motto is that he "doesn't teach students WHAT to think, he teaches them HOW to think," and that cannot be more accurate. His lessons do not simply help us fulfill our short term goals (passing an exam), but rather lay a foundation for us to know "how" to think, how to learn, and how to analyze for the rest of our lives.

Several years ago, I was a student in Dr. Farber's math class. Afterwards, I studied at the Bay…read moreAcademy middle school (accepted as science talent and math talent, chose science) and at Brooklyn Technical High School. I credit Dr. Farber with these achievements. Dr. Farber does not just train his students to solve only specific types of math problems - he teaches students a systemic way of thinking. This approach allows students to understand material in any field of study, not only in mathematics. The systemic way of thinking that Dr. Farber helped me develop in his math class was useful to me in my later study of other fields that require logical thinking as well. When I first came to Brooklyn Tech (I missed Stuyvesant by a few points, because of the English section of the SHSAT), my math teacher gave us a problem which, to his surprise, many of the students were unable to solve. The problem was similar to a problem from our SHSAT high school admissions test. Many of these students have attended classes with different tutors. I realized that most tutors simply train their students to solve specific problems for exams, teaching them to temporarily memorize, rather than understand, the material. This sets Dr. Farber's classes apart, because he does an outstanding job at teaching students to truly understand the material. I further had the highest scores on the SAT math section, as well as on the SAT Math II and SAT Physics exams. I believe that learning from Dr. Farber has set the foundation for these successes as well, since it helped me to develop the ability to think systemically and understand mathematics, as well as physics. I am now working towards a double major in Mathematics and Computer Science. If you want success for your children, I highly recommend Dr. Farber's classes.

They do not teach the children strategies in test taking such as preparing for the SAT or for a Regents examination. Further, they seem to be out of touch with how my child was doing. They told me my child was doing well in a subject and had great confidence he would do well on a critical upcoming NYS examination. Imagine my shock and displeasure when my child failed! Sylvan refused to refund my money, and suddenly came up with all sorts of excuses as if they never had told me he was doing well. I believe they are OK as far as homework help or as a supplement to classwork. But I would not waste my money here for SAT prep, Regents prep, prep for state exams, etc.
